Japanese Student in HK Recalls the Siege as "Battlefield": "We realize that we should never take freedom for granted"

Shitabae Chohu, a 19 year-old exchange student from Sophia University in Japan, has come to the Chinese University of Hong Kong to learn Chinese since August. On Nov 14, she witnessed the police laying siege to the campus. She said, "Police fired a lot of tear gas, it was like a battlefield, and students were busy helping the injured."

She was told by local students that police would soon enter the campus. Students therefore set up roadblocks and promised that they would defend the campus till the very last moment. "We, the exchange students, are going to leave soon, and we are so worried about our local friends."

"It was such a pity that we could only stay here [Hong Kong] for a very short time. Meanwhile, we realize that we should never take freedom for granted. We promise to tell everyone in Japan what is going on in Hong Kong, and tell them what the truth is."

Police Arrest Internet Radio Host for Alleged Money-Laundering and Violation of National Security Law

Internet radio D100 host Giggs was arrested this morning (Nov 21), said a post on his facebook page. While Giggs has contacted his lawyer, it remained unknown whether he could be bailed out and there was no mention about reasons of his arrest.

A couple of hour later, Lai Chak-fun, a current affair commentator of D100, revealed on his Facebook that several members of Giggs’ family have been arrested, including his wife. Another D100 anchor Li Wei-ling also noted in her Facebook that police officers have been searching at Giggs’s home for hours.

It was later confirmed that both Giggs and his wife have been arrested and detained in Wan Chai Police Station, and Chai Wan Police Station, respectively.

Sources said that Giggs’ arrest may be related to the netizen-initiated crowdfunding program, “A Thousand Parents Sponsor Children Studying in Taiwan”, which aims to provide financial means for young pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong to further their study in Taiwan.

Giggs’ radio programme has been criticized by Pro-Beijing media such as Wen Wei Po in February this year for “nurturing the black devils (referred to pro-democracy protesters)". This was believed to be a lead for Hong Kong police to conduct investigations, which resulted in the arrests on suspicions of money-laundering, and violating #NationalSecurityLaw by supporting people in the #subversion of the state.

Hong Kong Film Censorship Authorities reject two student movies citing national security violations

Two movie screenings in the 4th Ground Up Student Film Festival have been cancelled after the films failed to obtain a Certificate of Approval from Hong Kong’s Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (#OFNAA).

The news came shortly after the amended Film Censorship Ordinance came into effect on 5 November 2021. The amended ordinance sets out the need to put an end to acts and activities that may endanger national security and it also allows the Chief Secretary of Administration to withdraw already-issued screening permits.

On November 19, 2021, Hong Kong Film Censorship Authority first turned down approval for #TheCage, a short film directed by Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) graduate Tsoi Wing-chau. The film depicts totalitarian rule, capitalism, freedom and resistance.

Two days later, another film Piglet Piglet that sets around Taiwan's Presidential election also failed to obtain an approval certificate. The screening of #PigletPiglet was cancelled just over five hours before it was set to be held.

Director of the film, Lin Tsung-yen, wrote on his Facebook page, saying that “local authorities expressed disapproval. They asked me to cut all scenes and information linked to Taiwanese Presidential election and Tsai Ing-wen.”

Iran’s brave and powerful gesture is a small wonder from a World Cup of woe

Well, that was unexpected. After the cold, cold theatre of Qatar 2022’s opening game, elite sport reimagined as a despot’s light-show, something remarkable happened on Monday afternoon in Doha.

As night fell over the vast, swooping Khalifa International Stadium (all these World Cup structures are vast and swooping; unless specifically told otherwise, assume vast and swooping) England and Iran produced something that felt jarringly real, oddly warm, suspiciously authentic.
