Brazilian Federal Government Unwilling to Buy Chinese Vaccines, Only Buying Products Developed by British Pharmaceutical Companies and Oxford University

In an interview with local Brazilian media on 14th October, Sao Paulo State Health Secretary Jean Gorinchteyn confirmed that the Brazilian federal government had not appropriated funds to purchase the Wuhan Virus vaccine (CoronaVac) from China.  Clinical trials of CoronaVac are being conducted in Brazil and the Butantan Institute of Sao Paulo State is in collaboration with research and development.

Gorinchteyn had also stated that in an earlier Ministry of Health meeting, the Brazilian federal government had confirmed they would only purchase vaccines jointly developed by British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and Oxford University and were not planning on purchasing CoronaVac.   Besides the guaranteed purchase of 61 million doses of the Oxford vaccines that the Brazilian federal government had already committed to, authorities are unwilling to purchase additional vaccines, but did not explain the reason why funds were not appropriated to buy the Chinese vaccine.

Experts Worried About China’s Intelligence Network as The UN Global Data Centre in Zhejiang

The US government severely discourage Chinese mobile applications and cloud service providers in recent years, stopping the Chinese government from getting sensitive data. However, the United Nations Secretariat cooperated with China recently, established a global data centre in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province, and the “geospatial centre” that uses satellite surveillance technology to process data from various UN member states. The United Nations officials who signed the Data Centre protocol are also from China. Experts worried that the data centre would become China’s global intelligence network.

A former reporter of The Wall Street Journal and a researcher at the Hudson Institute, Claudia Rosett disclosed the data centre location in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province last week. She criticized the plan was that China uses the name of the United Nations, to strengthen the scope of surveillance.

UAE Donates COVID-19 Test Kits from BGI to Nevada, U.S. Government Warns Against Using it for Fear of Leakage of Patient Privacy

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) donated 250,000 doses of Chinese-made COVID-19 test kits to the State of Nevada. However, the officials from the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security privately warned the State of Nevada not to use this batch of test kits due to concerns over patient privacy, the accuracy of the kits, and the involvement of the Chinese government.

U.S. intelligence agencies have been warning that China and other countries may use test samples to learn about the medical history of the tester, illnesses, or genetic characteristics of the test subjects, but they have not provided evidence. According to an internal email obtained by the Associated Press under the Public Records Act, the office of the Governor of Nevada shows that the U.S. authorities are most concerned about the test kits produced by BGI Group from China, the largest gene-sequencing company in the world.

William Puff, a Homeland Security regional attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi, sent an email to Nevada officials, “I hope that the leadership of the Nevada COVID-19 Task Force is aware of this. As a result, they can make an informed decision and know some concerns of the U.S. government."

James Bond Has No Time for China

The final James Bond outing for Daniel Craig, “No Time to Die,” also marks a notable milestone for Bondian geopolitics: The franchise just completed a five-movie arc with a single lead actor, and amid all the globe-trotting and intrigue you would barely know that China existed. Shanghai and Macau were brief backdrops, and one villain had been tortured, offstage and in the past, by Chinese security forces — but overall a series released across the years of China’s rise gave little hint that America’s leading rival mattered any more than any other exotic Bondian locale.
