After Hong Kong: China sets sights on solving “the Taiwan problem”

Tian Feilong, a professor from Beijing, said that National Security Law was not just about ending a year of protests in Hong Kong, it also sent a warning to Taipei and Washington.

Ho-fung Hung, professor of political economy at Johns Hopkins University, does not think an invasion of Taiwan is imminent, but says Hong Kong’ security law sent a very clear message about China’s long-term plans. “It will be a kind of a warning to Taiwan: Don’t think that Beijing would not take military action. Don’t think that we will fear international reaction.”

Chair of Taiwan’s foreign affairs and defense committee, Wang Ting-yu said, “Hong Kong is a mirror of our future if Taiwan becomes part of China.” He stated that the Taiwanese military could hold off the PLA despite some major gaps in its underwater and missile capabilities.

Assembly in New York on Oct 1, Urging Countries to Establish Multilateral Alliance to Hold the CCP Accountable

Over 200 non-governmental organisations (NGO) jointly initiated a rally named "Resist China: A Global Day of Action" in more than 60 cities around the world on October 1, "celebrating" the China National day. Participants include Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hongkongers, Taiwanese, Southern-Mongolians, and even Chinese. Dorjee Tseten, the General Director of Student for a Free Tibet, one of the organisations initiating the event, said that people around the world should stand together to fight against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The purpose of the event was to urge the European Union (EU) and other governments establishing a multilateral alliance, to hold the CCP accountable with tougher policies. "Xi-Jinping's policies are speeding up the end of the regime. The fall of the CCP is near", he believed.

Dorjee said, "Western democratic countries made China becoming a beast it is today. We have to clear about this, that CCP is a threat to global security.” He pointed out that in the past, western countries only focused on benefit, neglecting all China inhumane tyranny in Xinjiang and Tibet. "Have they (western countries) awaken yet? Yes, they have. But do we satisfy? No, we do not. We need stronger action."

He thinks governments from all over the world should implement policies for the accountability of "business which make benefits from people who suffer”, and organisations in civil societies should reveal these issues to their governments as well as the people. He gave an example that Apple Inc. had been blocking virtual private network (VPN) functions for the Chinese government and removing mobile application used by Hong Kong protesters from its shelves, before it launched its first human rights policy in September after prolonged lobbying by civil society groups. He argued that consumers should also raise their awareness, "when everyone buy Chinese products with a low-price in the western countries, they have to know where these products come from, often from oppressive regimes such as in Tibet.

Mass Protest in Washington, US Representative Calls for Punishment for CCP as Transnational Organized Crime Group

More than 10 pro-democracy groups assembled in front of the US Capitol on 1 October in protest of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) tyrannical rule. A number of members of the US Congress attended the demonstration in support of the cause. A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives demanding that the CCP be designated as a transnational organized crime group, prosecuted, and punished.

Over 10 organizations from Washington and New York gathered in front of the US Capitol in protest of the CCP’s persecution of the Uyghurs and the Tibetans, erosion of freedom in Hong Kong, suppression of dissidents, and bullying and intimidating Taiwan by military means. Hundreds attended the demonstration, including a number of Hongkongers, Tibetans, Uyghurs, and pro-democracy Chinese activists.

Speaking at the demonstration, Democratic representative Tom Suozzi thanked the participants for exposing what the CCP had done. “No new movies, fancy pamphlets, sanitized history, or trade deals will make these [acts by the CCP] palatable. We must be aware of the threat the CCP poses to all those around the world who love freedom as well as to Chinese citizens,” said Suozzi.

Republican representative Scott Perry said he would hold the CCP responsible for what they had done. He introduced a bill at the Congress the same day, asking that the CCP be designated as a transnational organized crime (TOC) group, and prosecuted and punished as such. “The CCP is detaining people against their will, altering cultures, damaging or eradicating languages, coercively harvesting organs, building concentration camps, and so on and so forth. And yet, they are getting away with these by virtue of being the legitimate ruler of China when in fact it is a criminal group subjecting China to oppressive rule. We need to define them as such and hand out fitting punishment to them,” he said.

50 US Senators urged US-Taiwan Trade Agreement to counterbalance China's economic dominance in Indo-Pacific Region

A total of fifty US Senators from the Republican and the Democratic Parties, accounting for more than half of the Senate, sent a joint letter to the US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Thursday [01 October]. The letter states that Taiwan is a long-term economic partner as well as a safe ally of the US, and called for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) between two countries as soon as possible. This is part of the from the Congress to the US government to counter China. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan expressed gratitude to the US Congress for showing bipartisan support for Taiwan once again.

42 Republican Party Senators and 8 Democratic Party Senators participated in the joint petition, including the co-chairs of the Senate Taiwan Caucus, James Inhofe and Robert Menendez along with US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations chairman, Jim Risch. The letter stated that they believed this is the time to negotiate trade agreements with like-minded countries in the Indo-Pacific region. A time when the US was seeking to promote an initiative for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Therefore, they strongly recommend having formal trade agreement negotiations with Taiwan.

The letter also stated that Taiwan is the 11th largest trade partner with the US, showing the ability to maintain its economic partnership with the US. Also, Taiwan is supporting approximately 208,000 jobs in the US and this number could increase after the signing of a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement.

Pandemic is an opportunity for Canada to reduce economic dependence on China

Now that COVID-19 has disrupted international supply chains, when Canada rebuilds, it should be toward an economy less integrated with China's.

Increasingly, signs are showing that China is taking advantage of the COVID-19 chaos to extend its influence globally. Post-pandemic, it will likely only get more powerful and assertive against a Western world mired in social and economic mayhem.

As Canada restarts its economy, the government would be wise to guide companies toward diversified markets. It needs to further cultivate alternative trading partners, such as fast-growing India and Brazil, and those with similar values, such as the European Union. And it needs to do so actively and aggressively.

Taiwan angered by Chinese air force's largest ever incursion

Taiwan sharply criticised China on Saturday after Beijing marked the founding of the People's Republic of China with the largest ever incursion by the Chinese air force into the island's air defence zone.

Taiwan, a democratically governed island that is claimed by China, has complained for more than a year of repeated missions near it by China's air force, often in the southwestern part of its air defence zone close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.

Taiwanese fighters scrambled against 38 Chinese aircraft in two waves on Friday, the Taiwan Defence Ministry said. It said Taiwan sent combat aircraft to warn away the Chinese aircraft, while missile systems were deployed to monitor them.
