Chinese Propaganda Outlet Has Paid US Newspapers $19 Million For Advertising, Printing

//One of China’s main propaganda outlets has paid American newspapers nearly $19 million for advertising and printing expenses over the past four years, according to documents filed with the Justice Department.

//China Daily, an English-language newspaper controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, has paid more than $4.6 million to The Washington Post and nearly $6 million to The Wall Street Journal since November 2016, the records show.

//China Daily also paid for advertising in several other newspapers: The New York Times ($50,000), Foreign Policy ($240,000), The Des Moines Register ($34,600) and CQ-Roll Call ($76,000).

//It spent a total of $11,002,628 on advertising in U.S. newspapers, and another $265,822 on advertising with Twitter.

//Pro-democracy groups have long warned about the Chinese government’s attempts to push propaganda through American news outlets. Freedom House and the Hoover Institution have both drawn attention to China Daily’s paid inserts in reports on the Chinese government’s efforts to influence the media.

//China Daily and other Beijing-controlled propaganda mills have come under intense scrutiny amid the coronavirus pandemic. Chinese government officials have tried to divert blame for the spread of the virus to the United States and other Western nations. Many of the regime-controlled outlets, including China Daily, have echoed the communist leaders’ talking points.

‘You will be put into detention': Former ABC bureau chief tells story of fleeing China for first time

Former ABC's China bureau chief, Matthew Carney, decided to immediately leave China with his family before their visas would expire in less than a week because the authorities had threatened to detain his 14-year old daughter. Carney was berated for any "negative China coverage" as he had reported the mass detentions of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

Foreign journalists and their families are under Chinese authorities' surveillance. One way the Chinese authorities try to force foreign journalists to self-censor their work is by threatening them not to renew the 12-month residency visas.

The Chinese Embassy Sent a letter to the Indian media, opposing their Introduction and the Blessings on Double Ten Day to Taiwan

October 10, 2020 marks the 109th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China (#ROC; Taiwan).

Indian media expressed their goodwill. Apart from the full-page advertisements for Taiwan’s National Day on the two major newspapers, pay-TV stations produced albums with the Taiwan authorities to introduce Taiwan with the cooperation between India and Taiwan, and the fact of Taiwan donating masks to India preventing and controlling the epidemic.

However, the Chinese Embassy in India sent a letter to Indian media, reminding them to abide by the “One China Principle” and not to send the wrong message to the public. This action drew criticism from Indian journalists. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan also criticized China on Twitter for extending its censorship to India.

Questioning China’s indirect threat

An independent journalist Aditya Raj Kaul uploaded a letter sent by the Chinese Embassy in India to various media on his Twitter. The embassy reiterated the One-China Principle in the letter that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and has become an international consensus. All the countries and Indian media should abide by related policies and perspectives and should not violate the principle. “Taiwan should not be considered as a 'country', or described as 'Republic of China', or described Taiwan leader as 'president'" called the media should not send the wrong message to the public. Other than uploading the letter, Kaul also questioned whether this is an indirect threat to Indian media that reported on Taiwan?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan also quoted the post of Kaul on Twitter, indicated that India is the largest democratic country in the world with vibrant and freedom-loving people. Yet, Communist China hoped to enter India as a subcontinent through censorship. Indians in Taiwan only replied, “disappear!”

China's media coverage on US election rises sharply, in response to negative and confusing news.

In the wake of the deadlock in the US presidential election results, some Chinese official media, which used to keep a tight rein on coverage of the election process and vote count, have recently changed. The coverage has been significantly raised, but focusing on negative news such as the discrepancies between US media's vote projections, controversies over mail-in ballots and public protests. There were also notable reports on Democratic presidential candidate Biden when he overtook Trump in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

It has been reported that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has issued a directive on reports of US Presidential Election, that all news have to follow a "unified arrangement", based on "standardized manuscript" from Xinhua News Agency, with "no reprinting of foreign media without authorization, and no follow-up reports". Chinese media are also required to position themselves according to the "state spokesman's stance on the subject", and "strictly prevent anti-US seditious and incite messages such as 'boycott US'". This directive was confirmed by media workers.

China bans live Oscars broadcasts after Hong Kong protest film nominated

China ordered local media to cancel live broadcasts of next month’s Oscars ceremony and to play down coverage of the event after a documentary on the Hong Kong protests was nominated for an award, according to a new report.

The Communist Party’s propaganda department issued the order to all media outlets, Bloomberg reported, citing anonymous sources. Outlets were told that coverage of the 93rd Academy Awards, which will air April 25, should focus on awards that aren’t seen as controversial.

Beijing Is Getting Better at Disinformation on Global Social Media

When China-linked networks of social media bots and trolls appeared on the global disinformation scene in 2019, most analysts concluded that their impact and reach were fairly limited, particularly in terms of engagement by real users and relative to more sophisticated actors in this realm, like the Russian regime. As many China watchers anticipated, that assessment now seems to be changing.

Several in-depth investigations published over the past two months by academic researchers, think tanks, news outlets, and cybersecurity companies have shed light on the evolution of disinformation campaigns originating in China. Some offer new insights on campaigns that peaked last spring, while others analyze more recent messaging, tactics, and accounts that have emerged since October 2020.

Army of fake fans boots China’s message on Twitter

China’s ruling Communist Party has opened a new front in its long, ambitious war to shape global public opinion: Western social media.

Liu Xiaoming, who recently stepped down as China’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, is one of the party’s most successful foot soldiers on this evolving online battlefield. He joined Twitter in October 2019, as scores of Chinese diplomats surged onto Twitter and Facebook, which are both banned in China.

Chinese media’s social mania maddens markets

It’s possible to read too much into Chinese state media jeremiads. Recent articles warning of social ills caused by high liquor prices, video-game addiction and e-cigarettes, to name a few, have wiped billions off index heavyweights like Tencent (0700.HK). Yet government columnists are unreliable policy prophets.

Traders are jumpy after Beijing announced in late July it would convert online tutoring companies, many listed in New York, to non-profit status. After law professor Henry Gao pointed out on Twitter that President Xi Jinping had called for something like this in 2018, Wall Street leaped to review Xi’s speeches to see what other industries he has it in for.

Why are these state media artists disrespecting the CCP?

The image above, from Xi Jinping’s visit to CGTN in 2016, states the reality of PRC state media all too clearly: “the CCP is CGTN’s daddy.”

Five years later, how come so many PRC state media personalities on Twitter are going to such great lengths to hide their Chinese state affiliations? Is it because they oppose the CCP? Enquiring minds want to know.

Before I address this question, I need to present a brief interlude on terminology: I propose the term “state media artist” for people who work for PRC state media.

Press groups raise alarm over threats to foreign media in China

Press groups have expressed alarm at the worsening intimidation of foreign media in China, often driven by government officials and organisations.

As recovery and rescue efforts continue in Henan province after last week’s deadly floods, groups including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China (FCCC) have condemned recent harassment and threats towards journalists covering the disaster.

Reporters from international outlets – including the BBC, Los Angeles Times, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera, CNN, Agence France-Presse and Associated Press – have been harassed or threatened over their coverage.

#Taiwan Condemns Hong Kong Authorities' Crackdown on #StandNews

On December 29, 2021, Taiwan's three major political parties all issued statements in response to Hong Kong Police's crackdown on Stand News, expressing their concern and condemnation.

Taiwan's ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party (#DPP), expressed "indignation and resentment" at the Hong Kong police's flagrant actions, searching media offices and arresting promoters of freedom and democracy. They consider these acts as strangling Hong Kong's freedom of expression and creating a chilling effect among media and public opinion. The DPP calls on the international community and Taiwan to continue observing Hong Kong's development.

The statement by New Power Party (#NPP) calls the actions by Hong Kong's national security police "disproportional", causing serious damage to the freedom of press, and effectively nullifies the rights laid out in the Basic Law: "Hong Kong residents shall have freedom of speech, of the press and of publication; freedom of association, of assembly, of procession and of demonstration; and the right and freedom to form and join trade unions, and to strike."

#Kuomintang, Taiwan's current opposition party, expressed deep concern that the authorities shut down a media company that spoke up for different public opinions and upheld principles of democracy, freedom, and human rights. They called on Chinese authorities to respect the younger generation's view of democratic values and freedom of speech. As Hong Kong had been the revolutionary headquarter of Dr Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China, Hong Kong's democracy and freedom are deeply tied to the pursuit of democracy and freedom on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Crackdown on Stand News is China's First Step in Controlling the World's Narrative, says Former #NextDigital Director

The day after Stand News was forced to shut down by Hong Kong Police, Hong Kong Democracy Council (#HKDC) held a rapid response virtual briefing on December 30, 2021, in which the speakers urged the international community to closely monitor the developing situation.

Not only is freedom of press under attack in Hong Kong, they said, the incident also signifies important future challenges, such as the possibility of China manipulating the world in the future.

The invited speakers were #ThomasKellogg, executive director of the Center for Asian Law at Georgetown University; and #MarkClifford, former independent non-executive director of Next Digital.

As a former director of Next Media, Clifford saw firsthand the government's oppression against Apple Daily, which began even before the National Security Law (#NSL) took effect on June 30, 2020. The crackdown against Stand News had been rumored to be coming for some time; even so, when it finally became reality, Clifford felt it deeply.

"What's happening at Stand News is tragic," Clifford said, "Perhaps not a complete surprise, because we have seen what happened at Apple Daily. It's extraordinary when you're on the other end of state power - unchecked state power. In a city like Hong Kong, it's hard to believe."

The arrests and forced closure of Stand News happened soon after the conclusion of the legislative elections. Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang had twice written to the Wall Street Journal to criticize their reporting of the Hong Kong Elections, even calling its editorials "sickening".

Clifford said that this had not been a coincidence; rather, it reflects the Chinese Communist Party's ambitions to control the world's narrative.
