Tsai says Taiwan will help US counter PLA threats

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen told emissaries visiting at the request of US President Joe Biden on Thursday that the island would work with the United States to deter threats from Chinese military activities.Former senior US officials, including ex-US Senator Chris Dodd and former deputy secretaries of state Richard Armitage and James Steinberg, are visiting Taipei in a trip to signal Biden's commitment to Taiwan and its democracy.Tsai told the US delegation in a meeting at the Presidential Office that PLA military activities in the region have threatened regional peace and stability."We are very willing to work with like-minded countries, including the United States, to jointly safeguard the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific and deter adventurous manoeuvres and provocations," Tsai said. She vowed to continue to cooperate with the United States to counter "cognitive warfare" and misinformation, but did not elaborate.Dodd told Tsai the Biden administration would be Taiwan's "reliable, trusted friend," which will help the island expand its international space and support its investment in self defence. He added the US partnership with Taiwan is "stronger than ever" and that the visit was to reaffirm Biden's commitment to the island.Tsai also told the delegation that Taiwan looks forward to resuming trade talks with the United States as soon as possible. Taipei has long sought a free trade deal with Washington.Dan Biers, director of the State Department's Office of Taiwan Coordination, is also part of the delegation.Taiwan has complained over the last few months about almost daily missions by the PLA air force near its air defence identification zone (ADIZ). Twenty-five mainland aircraft, including fighters and nuclear-capable bombers, entered Taiwan's ADIZ on Monday in the largest reported incursion to date.Beijing announced on Wednesday it would begin five days of live-fire drills off a part of the coast facing Taiwan, which Taiwan's Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng told reporters Taipei would pay close attention to."There's some psychological impact, but don't get too worked up about this. Everyone should have confidence in the armed forces," he said. (Reuters)

WATER idea! Beijing suggests US, Japan keep Fukushima waste instead

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson has put forward a novel alternative to Japan’s plans to dump “treated” nuclear wastewater in the Pacific, after Tokyo and Washington claimed it was safe, even “drinkable”.

“Why don’t they keep it for themselves? Or maybe ship it to the US?” she tweeted.

PM 'must impose sanctions' on China over Hong Kong

More than 100 MPs and peers have urged Boris Johnson to impose sanctions on Chinese officials who led a crackdown on Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigners.

Their letter to the prime minister also calls for more sanctions to be placed on those responsible for abusing the human rights of the Uighur minority.

The cross-party group includes shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy and former governor of Hong Kong Lord Patten.

...

In their letter, the MPs and peers ask the prime minister to impose travel bans and asset freezes on the Chinese Communist Party officials responsible.

Such a move would also be in response to the sanctions placed on nine UK citizens - including five MPs - last month for spreading what China called "lies and disinformation".

Meanwhile, the MPs and peers are calling for sanctions to be extended to more officials responsible for human rights abuses against the Uighurs.

...

MPs will vote next week on a motion declaring genocide is taking place in Xinjiang.

Demonstrators burned the Chinese Flag to Protest the UN's Inaction; the Military Strafed Citizens, Causing At Least 1 Death and 2 Injured.

Anti-coup protests in Myanmar lasted for more than two months, making more than 500 death. After the mass demonstration on Easter Sunday, people protested across the country today (5th April). Some protesters burned the Chinese flag, which showed their dissatisfaction with China not speaking out in the United Nations. Furthermore, the military continued their bloody suppression in Sagaing Pinlebu that some citizens had been dispersed by tear gases and bullets, causing at least one death and two injured.

In Sagaing Pinlebu, the local citizens gathered for a protest in a secondary school that holds teachers' training. The military shot tear gases and bullets at the citizens and arrested two people. Some protesters were dissatisfied, and they brought self-made shotguns forward to support the arrested people but were fired by the military with live ammunition. One of the citizens, Aung Naing Win, died after the bullet broke through his rib cage, and also two more people were injured as they got shot.

China, Russia 'primary culprits' behind 'Cold War' levels of espionage and foreign interference towards Canada: CSIS

OTTAWA – Canada’s spy agency says that it “observed espionage and foreign interference activity at levels not seen since the Cold War” last year and that many security threats have become “much more serious.”

“The key national security threats facing Canada, namely violent extremism, foreign interference, espionage and malicious cyber activity, accelerated, evolved and in many ways became much more serious for Canadians,” warns Canadian Security Intelligence Service Director (CSIS) David Vigneault in the organization’s 2020 annual report.
