HK today, Philippines tomorrow: They are coming for us

by Leila de Lima

//When people choose to be a democracy, they are, in fact, choosing the quality of life that lends itself best to the survival of humanity: one that values every life, gives everyone the opportunity to contribute to society, while allowing the most capable – as opposed to the most vicious and power-hungry – to lead the nation both through the travails of daily life as well as through the great uncertainties of the grave crises that humans will inevitably face once in a while.

//The freedom they fight for is both the incentive to participate and the key to the success of the organization. They fight because they want to live free. And the nation is the better for it.

//As we watch the protesters in Hong Kong, including political leaders who are willing to sacrifice themselves to fight for Hong Kong and its people, what we ought to see are protesters that are fighting for democracy everywhere, including here in our own nation.

//So I continue to stand with Hong Kong, as I have more than a year ago. Not just because their fierce and fearless protest leaders stood up for me when my freedom was taken, but, more importantly, because they are standing up for the Filipino nation when they stand up against the Chinese government’s violent bullying.

//I can only hope that other countries, their leaders, and their people, will stand for Hong Kong, for Taiwan, and for the Philippines. Because tyranny is never satisfied; it is perpetually hungry.

//They are coming for us. After Hong Kong. After Taiwan. Or maybe all together at the same time. They are coming after our freedom. They are coming to take away what we hold dear: our own humanity and human rights, and the life, liberty, and security of our children.

//Filipinos, I call on you to stand for Hong Kong, for we all know that, very soon, the fight will come to us.

#NathanLaw : The world must do more to fight China’s crackdown in Hong Kong

The following is excerpted from an article written by Hong Kong pro-democracy activist in exile and former lawmaker Nathan Law and published on Washington Post on Jan 8, 2021.

//This mass crackdown shows Beijing is not afraid of showing its teeth and acting like a thug. It will not stop until it has eliminated all opposing voices in Hong Kong. There is no chance for coexistence — and it’s time the international community recognized that.

...One of the major reasons the Chinese Communist Party has unashamedly dared to tear off the mask of promises it had given Hong Kong is the international community’s inaction. Because of China’s ever-growing economic machine, many democratic countries have turned a blind eye to its human rights record; they may talk the talk diplomatically, but refuse to walk the walk.

...What we need for the people of Hong Kong, and democracy in general, is the determination to put human rights above trade interests. We need concrete policies that hold the authoritarian CCP accountable. Statements of concern and condemnation are not enough — and trade or investment agreements with autocracies are even worse. For Beijing, these signatures on agreements are green lights to continue their actions with impunity. The European Parliament should resolutely reject the investment deal to demonstrate leadership in the fight against authoritarianism.

On the other side of the world, the Biden administration should continue to consolidate the transatlantic cooperation to combat China’s authoritarian expansion. Global issues, such as public health and climate change, should be seen as ways to boost cooperation between democracies and pressure authoritarian regimes. The incoming administration should not fall into the trap of believing the CCP’s empty promises. Constraining the CCP’s expansion should be a priority of all of the free world.

…It’s time for the world to stand up and defend our shared universal values with them, not with feeble words but with real actions, shoulder to shoulder.//

#JPAC calls for Japanese government to enact legislation for Human Rights #sanction

An inter-parliamentary group, Japan Parliamentary Alliance on China (JPAC) issued a statement on March 18, 2021 in which it condemned the China's General Assembly of the People's Congress for forcing changes to the electoral system in Hong Kong and charging 47 democrats with National Security breaches.

The alliance urged the Japanese Government to enact Human Rights Violations Sanctions Act as soon as possible and offer protection for Hongkongers facing oppression through immigration means.

The Alliance criticized the Chinese Communist Party’s (#CCP) amendments of Hong Kong’s electoral system as an act that deprives the democrat’s right to vote, aiming to weaken the development of democracy in Hong Kong.

JPAC further denounced that the CCP has blatantly violated the principle of One Country Two Systems as promised in the Sino-British Joint Declaration .

The statement also mentioned the Hong Kong authorities' arrest of 47 democrats for charges of “conspiracy to subverting state power”. It also reiterated that almost all known democratic political figures in Hong Kong have been arrested, jailed or forced to exile.

The JPAC strongly protested the arrests and called for the early release of the arrested persons.
