The University of Southern California Suspended a professor because of speaking "that" in Putonghua, discriminating against African-Americans
(North American News) A Communication Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) used a Chinese vocab "nèige" (meaning "that") with a Putonghua pronunciation, has led to a petition from a group of angry African-American. They said that it sounded like a word with discrimination or defamation to Africans, requesting an apology from the professor and the teaching suspension to have an investigation.
Professor Greg Patton has taught at USC Marshall School of Business for 20 years. During the online teaching of MBA related curriculum last month, Patton used Putonghua as an example, saying "nèige" replaces some meaningless words, like errs and umms, in China. He repeated "nèige" thrice.
Nevertheless, some students thought that the accent of the professor for "nèige" was similar to "nigga", a word that insults Africans. They pointed out that the professor had offended all African students in the class and had affected their mental health. The school said that another speaker will take over the curriculum at this moment, during the investigation period for Patton.

Australia Hiring Additional Mandarin-speaking Manpower For “Foreign Intervention Cases”
The relation between China and Australia remains tense. In an interview from The Australian, the Chief of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Reece Kershaw stated that they would be hiring more Mandarin-speaking staff to handle foreign interference cases. Besides, he said that the AFP was also hiring some language graduates and Chinese-Australians for these “new and complex” cases.
Besides the transnational or organised crime, the AFP also needs to handle the missions of protecting national safety. Facing the intensified conflict between China and Australia, “We are facing the well-trained high-tech people… the challenge for such criminals is how to bring intelligence to evidence.” said Kershaw, who had just been the Chief for a year in the interview by The Australian.
He stated that there were 65 detectives in charge with foreign intervention at the moment but that AFP still had inadequate in detectives who know Chinese. As a result, he would continue to employ related staff, “Our team needs to be more diverse, similar to the Australia society, but we are not there yet”.
Kershaw disclosed that he asked the FBI for assistance last year, the bureau provided detailed training materials for the federal police, to help with the investigation which involving the crimes of violations of the Foreign Intervention Law passed in 2018. Among them, there was a joint action between the AFP and NSW police, raided Labour MP Shaoquett Moselmane and his office part-time assistance John Zhang involving in the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration incident. Zhang was even accused of participating in the CCP’s united front training in 2013, hiding his identity from his boss, and influencing his boss wit improper means.

//Netflix is not available in China. Technically, people in China shouldn't be able to access the series due to the nation’s #GreatFirewall, but many are watching it anyway through illegal streaming and download websites.
Many Koreans are expressing disdain toward the rampant online piracy of Korean content in China, and the popularity of “Squid Game” has made the issue much more tangible...
“Even though Netflix is not available in China and the Chinese government has been pushing back against Korean content in recent years, there are always websites that distribute Korean shows illegally,” said Park Kyung-suk, a history professor at Yonsei University who specializes in modern Chinese history.
“When I was living in China, I found out some websites even charge money for Korean content that they pirated. Even when a website gets taken down, another one springs up right away.”
According to the Korea Copyright Protection Agency, China is the top country of illegally distributing Korean cultural content — including television shows, films, webtoons and music — over the past five years. From 2017 until September this year, over 85,000 of the total 411,319 cases of copyright violation regarding Korean content happened in China, followed by the Philippines and Vietnam. Although not surprising considering China’s vast population, many Koreans express disdain that such a large viewership is consuming Korea’s intellectual property illegally.
“The disdain boils down to the fact that although China consumes a large volume of Korean content, the Korean firms that created them receive none of the profit that they rightfully deserve,” said Lee Gyu-tag, an associate professor of cultural studies at George Mason University Korea.//
