Since March 2021, #LesterShum has basically lost his freedom, being one of the 41 pro-democracy politicians prosecuted under the #nationalsecuritylaw and subsequently detained. But that was by no means the only arbitrary charge #CCP pressed on him, he was also accused of "unauthorized assembly" for lighting a candle to commemorate the massacred students in 1989's #TiananmenMassacre. His "guilty" verdict has finally come through earlier this month, joining the ranks of many a political prisoner in #HongKong. He writes very often to the public and his constituent though, it is heartening and sad at the same time, seeing that he has retained his sardonic humour even under such grim circumstances. Please have a read of the excerpts of one of his many letters.

Please do not hesitate to write to him at "PO Box 33854, Sheung Wan Post Office, Hong Kong". As always, we also urge you to write to less well known activists. Please DM for further information!

TLDR: 32 years ago #CCP rejected the idea of #democracy and treated human lives as pieces of trash they can crush at will. Today, #CCP is still rejecting the idea of democracy, and the human lives lost under its evil regime are only piling up - ask #Tibetans, #Uyghurs and #HongKongers!

As #HongKongers, we have commemorated #TiananmenMassacre for years. We know that numerous died, even more lost loved ones. Today we want to remind the world what they were fighting for: freedom. It comes down to people believing that they should be the masters of themselves, that the government should represent and serve the people. Yet the CCP thought (still thinks) it is the emperor, that it owns everything in #China including people's lives, which they regard as theirs to extinguish.

Three decades ago, the world believed that once #China's economy improved, it will become more open and democratic. Many HKers believed that too. Now China is the second largest #GDP in the world with concentration camps and forced [...]
TLDR: Because of #TiananmenMassacre, #HongKong has never fully trusted #CCP, fearing that the promise of #democracy will never be realized and our way of life and #freedom will be crushed in the most brutal way. The violent crackdown of 2019's democratic movement and the arbitrary imposition of #nationalsecuritylaw are pretty much our worst nightmare come true.

While an older generation of #HongKongers commemorated #Tiananmen because they felt that those in #Beijing were kin, a young generation of #HKers, many born after 1989, have different reasons to remember the massacre. Instead of feeling bonded by blood to the #Chinese protesters, many "pass down the torch" of June 4th because they believe that history must be preserved, and they recognized that protesters on Tiananmen Square were fighting against the same oppressor, for the same goals - democracy.

To nobody's surprise, #HK's dim-witted puppet government is banning this year's vigil. If the #Chinese government means business about getting [...]
