Hong Kong Police Force Considers Arming Officers with Tasers and Net Guns

Sources claim that the Hong Kong Police Force is considering arming their officers with Tasers and net guns amidst the protests.

Secretary for Security, John Lee Ka-Chiu, said that the Force is open to options to spruce up the Force's arsenal as an alternative to lethal weapons, in order to minimize casualties.

Editor's Notes:
Tasers make use of a high-voltage, but low amperage to stun its victim. While it is often said to deliver a powerful, yet temporary shock, rather than a deadly one, it delivers a pulse of about 19 pulses per second, incapacitating the victim and sending them into muscular spasms.

A taser shot at the chest area can cause cardiac arrhythmia (disruption of the 'rhythm' of the heart), leading to a heart attack of even death within minutes, especially if the victim is not treated immediately.

We have witnessed incidents after incidents of the police denying medical attention to injured arrestees. We have also seen them intentionally forgoing the guidelines of the usage of their weapons, such as firing the tear canisters directly at people, or aiming their beanbag rounds and rubber bullets directly at people's heads and eyes.

Less lethal weapons can still be lethal when placed in the hands of the bloodthirsty. The Force has not softened its approach.

Female protester: the chains attached to my waist, wrists and ankles were for humiliation

Published on lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting's Facebook page yesterday (January 15) was a complaint he recently received from a female protester. Due to her ill health, the female protester has been receiving medical treatment in hospital, under escort, wearing just handcuffs.

Last week, officers of the Corrections and Services Department came to know that she received more than 200 greeting cards during Christmas, they also inquired whether she was a protester, to which she acknowledged.

When she was sent for medical treatment again, she was fettered with chains attached to her wrists, ankles and waist. She criticized the change from handcuffs only to attaching shackles was done deliberately to humiliate her in the public.

Taobao, Baidu Cloud Storage Service Slammed for Piracy in US’ 2020 Review of Notorious Markets

Several Chinese websites, including Taobao and Baidu Wangpan, are among those named notorious markets for counterfeiting and piracy in an annual review by the US Trade Representative’s (USTR), published on 14 January. Calling out 39 websites and 34 physical markets on their involvement in acts of piracy and infringements detrimental to American intellectual properties, economy and consumers, the report also names a number of brick-and-mortar markets in China, including the Huaqiangbei Electronics Mall in Shenzhen and Xiushui Street in Beijing. It further notes that China remains a major source of physical piracy, having accounted for 92 percent of the total value of pirated imports seized by US Customs in 2019.

In the report, the USTR says that commercial-scale copyright infringement and piracy activities cause US businesses economic losses. The purpose of the report, it says, is to encourage the government and the private sector to take action to reduce piracy and copyright infringement, and a focus this year is how e-commerce platforms are contributing to copyright infringement.

Uganda suspended a "Belt and Road" essential constructions

#Reuter reported that #Uganda has suspended an essential construction under China's Belt-and-Road initiatives, spoken by a Uganda official.

Uganda originally planned to build a railway to #Kenya with China Harbour Enginering Company (#CHEC) in 2015. The project is expected to cost USD$2.2 million. Unlike other narrow track railway in Africa,  this railway project complies to the international construction standard. However, Uganda didn't receive any fund from China under the Belt and Road policy.

Uganda was forced to stopped the plan with CHEC and is considering to continue the project with Yapi Merkezi, a Turkish company.
