( Editor’s Note: The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government Chief Wang Zhi-min lost his job and Junius Ho lost his honorary degree at Anglia Ruskin University because of the protests. When will Carrie Lam lose her fellowship in Cambridge? )

Carrie Lam has always been criticized since the anti-ELAB movement. Hongkongers numbering in the teens demonstrated outside of the University of Cambridge demanding the school withdraw Carrie Lam’s honorary fellowship.

The participants include university students, the Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation and District Council Elect Suzanne Wu Sui-shan and Ben Lam. Benedict Rogers, the founder of HK Watch also joined the rally in Cambridge to urge the University to revoke Carrie Lam’s honorary fellowship. They held the banner “No Honorary Fellowship to Carrie Lam” and marched from Great St Mary’s Church to Wolfson College.

They criticized Carrie Lam and the HKSAR government led by her has been suppressing the anti-ELAB movement and eroding the freedom in HK. They believe that these actions disqualify her as an honorary fellow of the University of Cambridge.

Without a doubt, reforms are merry sounds of hope. But one can't help but notice the hypocrisy in the latest proposals set forth by the government, which heavily contradicts past remarks made by the very same ministers. Is it not a disgrace to sugarcoat the political reality and honeyfuggle the outraged populace by addressing materials needs while bypassing the raging political demands?!

[Editor's note: To prevent contracting the novel coronavirus, face mask should be worn. Everyone should keep their hands and avoid touching the face and eyes.]

According to the Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan, a face mask is unnecessary in regular social situation, if there is no symptom: “Unless there are symptoms, in general, a mask is unnecessary in ordinary social situation," Chan said.

When Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam met the press with some government officials and experts on Jan 25, they did not wear any face masks at that time and had since then attracted lots of criticisms. At the press conference held three days later on January 28, they finally wore face masks.

How arrogant and egocentric does one have to be to mock the medical workers in midst of this life-threatening disease? Not to mention this is all because of your inaction to tackle the problem at its root.

Carrie Lam claimed that a full shutdown of the border is meaningless and keeps ignoring the people's requests, despite all the negativity surrounding the decisions made by her. It has been a rather disastrous month, as community outbreaks happening in various locations and districts of Hong Kong.

Her actions have left many Hong Kongers suspicious of the intentions of her plans. It feels like she is exploiting this disease, and using her actions with dealing with this disease as a tool of revenge against the Hong Kongers, for their support of the anti-extradition protest last year.

She might be thinking that by complying to the Draconian government of China, and responding to the outbreak in this manner, it will force the Hong Kongers to regret over their actions and support for the Anti-Extradition bill.

Over in China, we are witnessing mainland Chinese affected by Covid-19 standing up for their rights, against the Chinese Communist Party. There has been massive public outrage over the government's lack of efforts in combating the disease. Social media posts calling and demanding for democracy, freedoms and autonomy have been appearing in large numbers, so much so that the government is unable to censor every single one of them. This pandemic has awakened the people. They will not tolerate the oppression anymore. None of us can predict the future, but at least, we need these actions of the mainland Chinese to make an impact on the Chinese Communist Party.
