Shop now!: Hongkongers' Lunar New Year Market in Causeway Bay as Alternative to Government-run Version at Victoria Park

Protest-friendly "yellow" economy has spread to annual Lunar New Year Market. As the government removed the "dry good" section in Hong Kong's largest lunar new year market in Victoria Park and banned citizens-initiated markets in various districts, some citizens then rented their own venue to organize a market place that welcomes protest-themed products.

Some of the booths in the Causeway Bay are, for instance, rented by students who sell hand-made goods.

Opening Hours of the Lunar New Year Market in #Causeway Bay:
Address: Percival Street
Time : 1200 - 2200
Date: Now - 24 Jan

Despite raided by 200 police with multiple arrests including the founder and the head of the company, Next Media persisted to publish their newspaper Apple Daily as usual on August 11, 2020.

Many Hongkongers showed support by buying the newspaper. A pro-democracy "yellow" shop owner Mr Wong has paid for more than a hundred copies of Apple Daily in a convenient store and offered them for free.

He hoped Apple Daily could stand until the end, “I hope you [Next Media] can persist. As the largest 'yellow' media, it will be sad that we lose you. I hope you can stand until the end and Hongkongers will walk with you.”

Pro-democracy Restaurant Owner and Family Subjected to Police Violence Face Arrest After A Year

In late October 2019, a number of irritant odor incidents were reported in Tuen Mun. Some local residents speculated that the pungent smell was caused by the Tai Hing Police Operational Base.

On October 30,, 2019, hundreds of cvilian surrounded the police base and demanded for an explanation.

During the police dispersal operation, the owner of the restaurant 'Dan Yatai' and her brother were violently subdued by the riot police inside their restaurant and were arrested them on charges of 'obstructing police officers'. The owner and her brother were released on bail the next day.

A year later, 'Dan Yatai' said on their Facebook page on November 13, 2020 that the owner and her brother received a call from the Tuen Mun Police Station and were requested to go to the Police Station.

The owner told Stand News that she and her brother received the call in the afternoon. They were asked to bring their lawyers to the police station on Monday, November 16, but were not informed of their impending arrest.

It was not until her brother pressed further on the question, the police admitted that they would be arrested 'by appointment' and charged with 'obstructing the police officers'.

The owner added that there were a lot of people who got arrested after they were out on bail since last year, so she was psychologically prepared for this. She was confident that she would be exculpated.

On October 30 last year in Tuen Mun, police arrested over 50 civilians. When 'Dan Yatai' reopened on November 12, 2019, a lot of local residents queued up to show their support. Some people wrote encouraging quotes on the restaurant's door.

Protesters' Painting is "the Best Advertisement", Says
#Chickeeduck's CEO

Chickeeduck has a new branch in Tin Hau slated to open soon, with a painting of a protester boldly displayed on its shutters. CEO Herbert Chow said the painting was his favorite part of the new store; since the painting faces the on-ramp to the Central-Wan Chai Bypass, "This is our best advertisement."

He wanted it to be a constant reminder to the government and the people of Hong Kong: "If they hadn't tried to ram the extradition bill through #LegCo last year, would these people have been on the streets?"

He also wanted to challenge the pro-Beijing camp's denigrating description of the pro-democracy protesters as "evil rioters". "If they withdrew the bill on June 12 [when LegCo was scheduled to vote on the extradition bill], no one would need to wear all this gear to protect themselves."

Chickeeduck had caught the attention of Hongkongers when they displayed a statue of Hong Kong's Lady Liberty in one of their branches earlier.

Originally a children's clothing store chain, the new branch will also carry products related to the anti-ELAB movement, such as T-shirts and small replicas of the Lady Liberty statue.

Chow said the store will present more merchandises with artwork from local artists.
