Hong Kong Police crowned 'Person of the Year' by China Media
Despite their brutality towards Hongkongers during the pro-demoncracy movement, the Hong Kong Police was named as the People of the Year on the magazine Global People, a subsidiary of China's state-owned Peoples’ Daily.
China state media praised the Hong Kong Police for their conduct on Weibo, “under the pressure of physical and mental stress or even injury, the Hong Kong Police continued to uphold the principles of integrity, honesty, respect for the people, and responsibility, carrying out their duties diligently in order to maintain social order in Hong Kong. They have become one of the most unforgettable memories of 2019 for the 1.4 billion citizens in China."
The news was later picked up by some pro-China Facebook pages. Some netizens left sarcastic comments such as “without knowing the police officers by their faces and permit numbers, though much wanted, I am unable to thank them personally”.

Surgical gown recall leaves medical centers scrambling
(31 Jan) Millions of surgical gowns made in China are being recalled because they may not be sterile. Surgeries are now being canceled in some hospitals.
The company said these facilities did not "maintain proper environmental conditions." Problems included gowns exposed to contaminants through open windows, failure to provide hand sanitation, and operators eating in the production area.
In fact in 2018, Cardinal Health had discovered that the supplier used an unregistered factory to produce the products, but after testing the company thought it would not affect the products, so it didn’t report it to the FDA at that time.
Surgical gowns are usually packed with other surgical equipments when shipped, so everything in the package may be contaminated. Cardinal Health said it has stopped working with Siyang HolyMed and will cooperate with the FDA's investigation.

Hotel in China crumbles into the ground
Opened just two years ago, the 80-room Xinjia Hotel located in Quanzhou, China has been deployed by the authorities to quarantine those who had close contact with patients of Wuhan pneumonia.
The hotel suddenly collapsed, leaving only the steel frame. According to the state-owned Xinhua agency, initially around 70 people were trapped, of which 43 were later rescued. Chinese officials, however, did not confirm whether anyone died.
According to Hong Kong news media RTHK, "China is no stranger to building collapses and deadly construction accidents which are typically blamed on the ountry's rapid growth leading to corner-cutting by builders and the widespread flouting of safety rules.
At least 20 people died in 2016 when a series of crudely-constructed multi-storey buildings packed with migrant workers collapsed in Wenzhou. Another 10 were killed last year in Shanghai after the collapse of a commercial building."

Hong Kong Hospital Authorities uses “Made in China" Hand Sanitizer, Allegedly Causing Skin Inflammation
A few days ago, Apple Daily exposed that The Hong Kong Hospital Authorities had proscured "made in China" antibiotic Tazocin on China's online platform Taobao.
Apple Daily again revealed that a number of public hospitals (including Caritas and Eastern Hospital) under the Hong Kong Hospital Authority had switched to a new alcohol hand sanitizer manufactured in Guangzhou, China.
Medical staff revealed that their hands was inflamed after using the sanitizer. They suspected that the hand sanitizer was the cause. Since there was no alternative supply available, they dare not to speak up.
The Eastern Hospital responded by saying the use of the said sanitizer has been suspended
and they have reported the incident to the Hospital Authorities Headquarters.
Medical staff of Caritas Hospital reported similar incident. As shown in the photos provided by the staff, the said hand sanitizer claimed to be certified by the WHO with “WHO Formulation 1”, containing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerin and other ingredients.
Following Apple Daily’s inquiry, a spokesman for the Eastern Hospital confirmed the usage of the mentioned hand sanitizer, but emphasized that no complaints were received from medical staff. That being said, they were aware of the fact that the hand sanitizer might cause allergy to some staff.

Walmart-exclusive router and others sold on Amazon & eBay contain hidden backdoors to control device
CyberNews researchers have discovered that Chinese-made wifi routers have secret backdoors which allow an attacker to not only remotely control the routers, but also any devices connected to it.
Backdoors are a means for an authorized or unauthorized person to gain access to a closed system – in this case, a router – by bypassing the standard security measures and take control, which is known as root access.
These Chinese-made low-cost routers, named as Jetstream, Wavlink and Ematic, usually are sold at Walmart, Amazon, and eBay.
CyberNews has also found evidence that an attacker has attempted to add the devices to a Mirai botnet, a malware which “infects devices connected to a network, turns them into remotely controlled bots as part of a botnet, and uses them in large-scale attacks.” It’s even possible that the router can steal your passwords on your devices no matter how many times you change them.

Beijing Mouthpiece Defames a 11-year-old Hong Kong Boy and Uses Fake Identity to Approach his Family
In Hong Kong, 11-year-old #JoelWong, the founder of the Tin Shui Wai Community Concern Group, was assaulted by a pro-Beijing elderly man on January 25, 2021.
Wong saw a group of elderly women and men gathering and dancing in a park in Tin Shui Wai. When he approached the group, reminding them to keep the music down, he was headbutted by one of the men who also punched Wong on his tummy.
Since Wong reported the case to the Hong Kong Police, Wong has been harassed by Ta Kung Pao, a Beijing-owned newspaper. On January 26, 2021, the CCP mouthpiece even published a so-called "interview" with Wong’s Grandmother on its frontpage, defaming the community-caring Wong as "going astray".
The Concern Group told Stand News that the reporter of Ta Kung Pao, who "interviewed" Wong's grandmother first claimed to be his teacher and social worker. When Wong's grandmother let the reporter into their apartment, he took picture of their household and other family members. It was only after that he then revealed his identity as a reporter.
The Concern Group denounced the reporter’s action, calling it “shameful” to chat with Wong's family and “betray their trust.”

Security scanners across Europe tied to China govt, military
//At some of the world’s most sensitive spots, authorities have installed security screening devices made by a single Chinese company with deep ties to China’s military and the highest levels of the ruling Communist Party.
The World Economic Forum in Davos. Europe’s largest ports. Airports from Amsterdam to Athens. NATO’s borders with Russia. All depend on equipment manufactured by Nuctech, which has quickly become the world’s leading company, by revenue, for cargo and vehicle scanners.
Nuctech’s critics allege the Chinese government has effectively subsidized the company so it can undercut competitors and give Beijing potential sway over critical infrastructure in the West as China seeks to establish itself as a global technology superpower.
“The data being processed by these devices is very sensitive. It’s personal data, military data, cargo data. It might be trade secrets at stake. You want to make sure it’s in right hands,” said Bart Groothuis, director of cybersecurity at the Dutch Ministry of Defense before becoming a member of the European Parliament. “You’re dependent on a foreign actor which is a geopolitical adversary and strategic rival.”//

Chinese #Drones Company #DJI denies accusations of leaking Ukrainian Military Secrets
#MediaMarkt, a German electronic retailer, removed all DJI products from their shelves last week, after sources confirmed that the Chinese drone manufacturer has been leaking Ukrainian Military secrets and locations to Russia.
DJI has responded on Twitter earlier this week, denying any breach of data.
Pulling all the DJI products from over 800 stores across 12 EU countries and Turkey, MediaMarkt only stated that immediate action was needed due to their responsibilities as a corporate, without any further explanation to the cause of the pull. However, in a response to an enquiry from the internet, the company claimed that DJI has been leaking the GPS data of Ukrainian army to Russia, and that they would follow up with situation as it develops.

China's WPS Office Software Accused of #Censorship and Lockup Users' Files
#WPSOffice, a Microsoft Office-like software released by China's company #Kingsoft, has recently been exposed for allegedly censoring content and locking users' files for sensitive words, prompting criticism.
Users have reported that WPS Office actively detects the contents of documents stored on computer drives and in the cloud. A file will be locked whenever sensitive words are found, which would be released only if the user files official complaints to the developer. The software locked a novel of more than 1 million words in one case. The author said the pieces have never been shared with anyone, questioning whether the WPS official had been peeking it without permission.
The official response from WPS was that the file contained illegal links, which is why it was banned, stressing that the user's privacy always comes first.
However, the WPS statement seems to make matters worse, and the general public is not at all convinced, with some questioning, " How do you know the document has an illegal link? Only if you peek at it!"
