Agnes Chow Mentioned in the Entrance Exam of a Prestigious Japanese Junior High schoo

Recently, many private junior high schools in Japan are holding entrance exams. An exam question at the Seiko Gakuin Junior & Senior High School, a prestigious school in Yokohama, sparked discussions between netizens in Hong Kong and Japan because the question mentioned Agnes Chow, the National Security Law and Keyakizaka46’s song “Fukyōwaon”.

The question appeared in the Social Studies paper, where an Asahi Shimbun newspaper article published on August 2020 was chosen and the candidates needed to answer questions accordingly. The article narrates how Agnes Chow was arrested and released, and the fact that she mentioned the song “Fukyōwaon” (means discordant sound) kept coming to her mind when she was held in custody, making her determined to protect her home. This article has attracted a lot of attention at that time.

Apart from asking where it happened and who was involved in the exam question, it also mentioned “be water”, one of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement slogan, quoting Xunzi (a Chinese Confucian philosopher) on his saying “water can carry a boat, but it can also overturn a boat”, subsequently asking the student candidate to define the meaning of “water”. The fourth question asked the candidates to answer in one sentence how they have experienced having denied their freedom. The last question linked Agnes’s arrest to Article 21 of the Japanese Constitution and asked the candidate to fill in what freedom is protected under this law.

Apple Daily Staff: "We will all become a sturdy apple tree"

The following is excerpted from an open letter written by an #AppleDaily staff:

"Dear colleagues at Apple Daily who stay until the last,

Dear fellow Hongkongers,

The perseverence and truth-seeking spirit of Apple Daily has long been seeded in our hearts.

Despite the turbulences of the time that try to disperse us, we have absorbed enough nutrients to grow wherever we are.

We will all become a sturdy apple tree.

I hope we all will never give up. We shall remember all the facts and true happenings. We will not let our present become the past rewritten. We will strengthen and better equip ourselves, so that we will be strong enough to face darkness in the future.

From an Apple Daily Staff"

The image comes from an overseas Hongkongers' group in San Francisco. It writes: "They try to bury us, without knowing that we are seeds."

Hongkongers Stay Up Overnight to Buy #AppleDaily for One Last Time

At 2am on Jun 24 in Mongkok, newspaper vendors received the second batch of Apple Daily from the printer.

The first batch with 800 copies were sold out immediately. The second batch was increased to 10,000 copies.

As the copies arrived, journalists and civilians rushed to take picture of the last edition of the pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong.

This will be the last appearance of the 26-year-old top-selling newspaper.

The authorities have been using different means to stop the truth-seeking newspaper from operating, by charging editors and executives with #NationalSecurityLaw and freezing the assets of the newspaper and three connecting companies.

Many see this as an "end" to press freedom and local culture that Hongkongers have enjoyed.

The headline of the last edition writes: "Hongkongers bid farewell in rain: 'We Support Apple Daily til the End'."

Mid Autumn Festival 2021: May we share the same moon, no matter where we are

September 21, 2021 marks this year's mid-autumn festival, a day that symbolizes reunion.

For many Hongkongers, it proves to be difficult in the context of 2021.

"Though a thousand miles apart,
May we share in this beautiful sight,
Under the waning moon we wait,
Until she shines again, so full and bright"

Wishing our readers peace on this Mid Autumn festival, from all of us at #BeWater HK.

"Glory HK": #Hongkongers Raise Glowing Signs amid Storm Clouds on Lion Rock

In Hong Kong, a group of pro-democracy citizens braved the heavy rain and hiked to the top of the #LionRock on the evening of June 9, 2022.

On the mountain, they displayed the light signs that spelled "Glory HK", to commemorate the third anniversary of the 2019 June 9 #AntiExtradition protest march.

When the group reached the summit, however, the hill was shrouded by dense clouds and heavy rain, with a thunderstorm warning from the weather observatory. After discussing their options, the group decided to carry through and set up the sign while they waited for the clouds to clear. Their patience was rewarded after waiting for over an hour; the clouds cleared for a brief moment, and Hong Kong's city lights come into view behind their glowing sign.

Speaking to a reporter, the organizer likened the weather atop the mountain to the outlook for Hong Kong's future: full of dark clouds, but there will be light for those who hold on to the end.

"The oppression keeps Hongkongers from speaking our minds, and even rational debates on the Internet risk violating the authority's red line; however, the beliefs of Hongkongers 3 years ago surely remain engraved in our hearts, and they will never change," said one of the participants.
