A number of Catholic churches across the city are open on the evening of June 4, 2021 to hold memorial masses for the June 4 Tiananmen Massacre that took place in Beijing 32 years ago.

“This is an attitude problem with the police”: Intern Journalist Fined for Gathering Ban
Earlier, an intern journalist of Stand News was issued a fine ticket due to violations of the gathering ban (Cap. 599G). When tried to explain her identity, the police asked for a valid accreditation from the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association, which was simply absent due to the journalist being an intern.
Ronson Chan, a senior journalist in Hong Kong, expressed his bewilderedness to the event. “There is a problem with the [police's] attitude during law enforcement.” he said.
“The Hong Kong Police Force announced that they didn’t recognise those documents anymore. Why are they asking for them again?” He noticed the officers involved belonged to the Police Tactical Unit. “Their training were mainly physical, and may not be equipped with adequate knowledge on the matter.” He went on to state it is important to know which team these officers belong to in order to follow up the case.

June 15, 2021 marks two years since the 35-year-old "Yellow Raincoat Man" Marco Leung used his death to protest against extradition to China and warn Hongkongers of the threat of the tyrannical regime.
It was in 2019, on the eve of the second rally called forth by the Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF), Leung chanted pro-democracy slogans and unfurled banners in protest of the government's undemocratic acts in a shopping mall in Admiralty.

Hongkongers Rush to Support #AppleDaily After Midnight
On the early morning of June 18, 2021, Hongkongers were already queueing up to buy Apple Daily, as a way to show support for the pro-democracy newspaper which has been under attack by the pro-China media, the police and the authorities for 'violating the #NationalSecurityLaw'.
The photos capture the scene in Mongkok at around 2am. Just as newspaper vendors piled up copies of Apple Daily coming fresh out from the printer, pro-democracy citizens and 'yellow' store owners bought copies to stand with the newspaper, its journalists and editors.
After a while, the newspaper has been sold out.
One day ago, 500 police officers raided the newspaper office, confiscating at least 37 computers, taking away journalistic materials and arresting 2 executives and 3 editors including the editor-in-chief.
The newspaper increased their print to 500,000 copies and told Hongkongers "we will press on."

HK Police Arrests Man for Hanging Pro-democracy Banner on Clothes-Drying Rack
A pro-democracy protest banner that read “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times” was seen hanging outside a residential building on Fife Street in Mong Kok, Hong Kong on June 21, 2021.
The police arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of publishing sedition texts.
At around 17:30 in the afternoon, approximately 20 police officers went up to the flat and took the banner away. Four officers stationed at the entrance of the building while others escorted residents to go up to their home.
Plain clothed officers were also seen at the scene taking videos.

At 2am on Jun 24 in Mongkok, newspaper vendors received the second batch of Apple Daily from the printer.
The first batch with 800 copies were sold out immediately. The second batch was increased to 10,000 copies.
As the copies arrived, journalists and civilians rushed to take picture of the last edition of the pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong.
This will be the last appearance of the 26-year-old top-selling newspaper.
The authorities have been using different means to stop the truth-seeking newspaper from operating, by charging editors and executives with #NationalSecurityLaw and freezing the assets of the newspaper and three connecting companies.
Many see this as an "end" to press freedom and local culture that Hongkongers have enjoyed.

Members of Student Politicism arrested when setting up street booth
#StudentPoliticism, a local organisation, first planned to set up a street booth in Causeway Bay. However, due to heavy police deployment and the cordon lines, the organisation had to relocate the booth in Mongkok.
Members of the organisation prepared leaflets to be distributed, but were surrounded by a large group of police. The police demanded all citizens on site to leave, otherwise they would be fined for violation of the 599G gathering ban.
At around 1700, three core members of Student Politicism and one volunteer were arrested, including the convenor #WongYatChin.

Grandma Wong was in Tseung Kwan O around 7:30pm, holding a handbill with the number 2 in her hands, signifying the two years since the death of Chow Tsz-lok.
She chanted familiar protest slogan “Five Demands No One Less”, and called for establishing an independent inquiry commission to investigate the cause of Chow's death.

Cardinal Joseph Zen appears in court in Hong Kong on day of prayer for China
Ninety-year-old retired Catholic cardinal #JosephZen hosted a packed mass in Hong Kong on the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China, just hours after a brief court hearing over charges linked to pro-democracy protests.
In his homily after pleading not guilty to charges of failing to register a pro-democracy association to Hong Kong Police, Zen chose not to speak about his legal case, but to highlight how Catholics in some parts of China cannot attend Mass right now — for they have no freedom now.
Zen dedicated the mass to churches in China where believers are still split between a so-called “underground” church resistant to the government, and a state-sanctioned church belonging to the Chinese Communist Party’s Patriotic Catholic Association.
In his remarks at Mass, Zen again criticised the deal between China and the #Vatican that allows Beijing to nominate bishops for the pope’s approval, calling it “unwise” despite being made with “good intention”.
"There is an urge to unify those above the ground and those underground but it seems that time is not ripe yet,” Zen said.
Implying that there may be more difficult times ahead, Zen said that “we may have to bear some pain and steel ourselves for our loyalty to our faith.”
He also dedicated prayers to churches in Myanmar led by #CardinalBo, his most outspoken supporter in Asia, as well as “brothers and sisters who cannot join tonight because they are not free”.
Zen, one of Asia’s highest-ranking Catholic clerics, was among five prominent democracy advocates — including activist and singer #DeniseHo and veteran human rights barrister #MargaretNg — who were arrested in early May. His arrest is part of a national security police probe into foreign collusion over a legal support fund for pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.
Instead, all five of the fund’s former trustees and its secretary were charged on May 24 with failing to register it as a “society” with police — a non-national security offence. All plead not guilty.

At Downing Street, London on June 4th, 2022, Hongkongers and Ukrainians organized a fight against dictatorship assembly. The solidarity movement voices support for the fight for freedom across mainly Hongkongers and Ukrainians.
Exiled activist #NathanLaw, a former legislator in Hong Kong and the founder of #Demosisto, was the first guest speaker of the event. He said to the crowd, "no matter where we are from, we are all escaping from the dictatorship regime."
He said that not only Ukrainians but also Hongkongers have been following the Russian invasion news.
Carman Lau Ka-Man, a former Wong Tai Sin District Councillor in 2019, was the next one to speak, urging overseas Hongkongers to do more when they were able to and to help those in Hong Kong who are suffering in jail or under suppression.
"Perhaps 1989 seems quite long ago, but let's not forget what we did in the year of 2019."

At Downing Street, London on June 4th, 2022, Hongkongers and Ukrainians organized a fight against dictatorship assembly. The solidarity movement voices support for the fight for freedom across mainly Hongkongers and Ukrainians.
Exiled activist #NathanLaw, a former legislator in Hong Kong and the founder of #Demosisto, was the first guest speaker of the event. He said to the crowd, "no matter where we are from, we are all escaping from the dictatorship regime."
He said that not only Ukrainians but also Hongkongers have been following the Russian invasion news.
Carman Lau Ka-Man, a former Wong Tai Sin District Councillor in 2019, was the next one to speak, urging overseas Hongkongers to do more when they were able to and to help those in Hong Kong who are suffering in jail or under suppression.
"Perhaps 1989 seems quite long ago, but let's not forget what we did in the year of 2019."

Hongkongers' Book Fair Cancelled, but Presses On with Online Store: "We'd Rather Be Naive than Give Up"
The annual Hong Kong Book Fair is set to take place in late July this year. However, many books that had political undertones or highlighted local culture had been banned from the book fair by local the government's Trade Development Council, who refused to explain the ban or give a list of exhibitors that they have turned away.
In light of this, local publisher Hillway Culture partnered with other like-minded exhibitors to organize the first-ever "Hongkongers' Book Fair," set to take place on July 14 in Causeway Bay.
The day before the fair was set to take place, however, the organizers received a notice from the venue owner saying that the book fair may be in breach of the fair's lease agreement, and they may need to terminate the lease, explained Hillway Culture's spokesperson Raymond Yeung during a press conference on the same afternoon.
Yeung explained in tears that he had expected all kinds of unexpected complaints against the book fair, including fire ordinances, anti-pandemic ordinances, or even the #NationalSecurityLaw. They had expressed willingness to fully cooperate with the venue owners, only so that #Hongkongers can have a book fair that belonged to themselves.
A journalist at the press conference mentioned that the pro-Beijing group "Politihk Social Strategic" had called on citizens to visit the book fair and "inspect the books for law violations". Plain-clothes officers were also said to have visited the venue, and inquired about the fair at the mall's management office.
By 9pm, the organizers announced that the venue owner had terminated the lease. The owner claimed that the book fair violated the venue's usage agreement by "sub-letting" booths to exhibitors - despite the venue having been previously used to host bazaars in a similar setup. The owner had even provided photos and promoted contractors who had previously provided booth setup works. Though the fair organizers expressed that they were willing to make any adjustments necessary, the owners insisted on terminating the contract, forcing the event to be cancelled.
News of the sudden shutdown was met with quick responses from Hongkongers who looked forward to the book fair. Many commenters pledged not to refund their VIP tickets and to visit the participating bookstores. In a subsequent Facebook post, the organizers thanked Hongkongers for their "encouragements, comfort, affirmations, and suggestions. This is an unexpected gift that came after such terrible news."
The organizers have continued on with the online version of the book fair, letting Hongkongers everywhere participate despite the lack of a physical venue. They had also secured a distributor in Manchester to ship out orders made in the UK.
Borrowing a quote from the participating Boundary Bookstore, the organizers wrote: "You can mock our naivete for staying behind, but we'd rather be naive than give up."
