24-Year-Old Man Arrested for Breach of Bail Conditions 5 Minutes Before Departure Allowed
A man involved in the PolyU "riot" case was at the airport last night and departed 5 minutes before the court's permission to leave Hong Kong took effect. He was arrested in breach of bail conditions and was detained to Kowloon City Magistracy in the morning. He was allowed to continue his bail under the original conditions. The magistrate stated that the defendant should depart at midnight, and the police had no discretion to let him leave.
The defense lawyer said that the 24-year-old defendant was scheduled to take a flight to Osaka University for exchange at 1 am. When he arrived at the departure hall at 11.55 last night, he was alleged to have violated the bail conditions by the immigration department. The defendant had no bailing paper on hand at that moment. The defense repeatedly emphasized that the defendant had reported to the police 24 hours before departure in accordance with the procedures, and the airport police knew that the defendant was allowed to leave Hong Kong on January 6.
