Newspaper in Hong Kong States in Editorial: "No Intention to Incite Hatred"

In late December 2021, six former and current senior staff members of Stand News were arrested for "conspiracy to publish a seditious material". The authorities said that it contravened sections 9 and 10 of the Crimes Ordinance.

The former chief-editor Chung Pui-Kuen and the former acting editor-in-chief Patrick Lam Shiu-Tung were both detained and denied bail. Stand News immediately announced to cease operation.

On January 6, 2022, #MingPao, a Chinese-language newspaper in Hong Kong, stated in its editorial that the newspaper has no intention to "incite hatred, dissatisfaction, and hostility" and they are only "pointing out the wrongdoings and suggesting a legal improvement to the society".

Following #StandNews, #CitizenNews and other 5 media have been recently closed down.

The chief-writer in Citizen News Chris Yeung Kin-Hing worried about the unpredictable redline. He was not comfortable to be a journalist as any article, report and interview can be classified as incitement.

Chief Executive #CarrieLam, however, claimed that the number of media registered on the information service department has increased in the past year, when she was asked whether press freedom has declined.

"The shut down of the media is their personal choice that we should not directly connect it with #FreedomofPress. The government and the police force only act in accordance with the law."

The editorial posted by Ming Pao reads:

"Criticism in the journal was to point out the mistakes or weaknesses of the related systems, policies or regulations and aim to correct or to eliminate them with legal improvement. There are no hatred, dissatisfaction, or hostility incitement to the government or other social groups."

New Hong Kong Textbooks Claims that Hong Kong has Never Been a Colony

#MingPao, a newspaper in Hong Kong, recently found four textbooks from three publishers that claim "Hong Kong is not a colony" in the module "Citizenship and Social Development".

One textbook even stated, "China has always had sovereignty over Hong Kong, while Britain only exercised colonial rule in Hong Kong."

Commons, a media outlet, confirmed the constitutional and historical status of Hong Kong as a former British colony, after researching historical documents and materials from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and the United Nations.

The media outlet also interviewed Dr. Yeung Wing-yun, who was a former Manager of Assessment Development in the History Division of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) and had taught high school and universities in Hong Kong.

Politics Comic Writer Justin Wong Reveals the Main Reason of Emigration

Former Assistant Lecturer at the Academy of Visual Arts at the Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU), as well as a politic comic writer, Justin Wong Chiu Tat, was namely criticised by the Hong Kong Police that his comic on #MingPao in Sep 2021 defamed Junior Police Call. He then apologised for the comic and moved to the UK in the end of that year.

He revealed in #SimonShen interview that his critical point to emigrate was regarding one of his research projects on the protests’ posters, happening after the comic incident. At the time, the seniors in the institution proactively reported it to the National Security Officers, possibly due to the slogans “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times” is shown on the poster.

However, HKBU denied reporting him to the officers and stated that they have been protecting the #AcademyFreedom, providing a suitable environment for their students and staff for research, education and learning. They added, the institution should be responsible to ensure on-campus events are complying to the law. With regards to this incident, HKBU mentioned, “the institution did not submit the case to the authority to follow-up.
