Carrie Lam Finally Wears A Face Mask

[Editor's note: To prevent contracting the novel coronavirus, face mask should be worn. Everyone should keep their hands and avoid touching the face and eyes.]

According to the Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan, a face mask is unnecessary in regular social situation, if there is no symptom: “Unless there are symptoms, in general, a mask is unnecessary in ordinary social situation," Chan said.

When Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam met the press with some government officials and experts on Jan 25, they did not wear any face masks at that time and had since then attracted lots of criticisms. At the press conference held three days later on January 28, they finally wore face masks.

Korean Media: China's refusal to supply raw materials may halt South Korean face mask production

(31 Jan) Due to the continuous spread of the Wuhan novel coronavirus, people from multiple locations are scrambling to buy masks, alcohol and other medical hygiene products. The quality of such products in South Korea is well recognised. Korean press stated that because China refused to export raw materials necessary for the production of Korean face masks, its local face mask manufacturers may stop production next Monday.

According to the report, raw materials to produce filters used to cost around 19,000 won (16USD). However, the outbreak of the novel coronavirus led Chinese face mask producers to snatch away filters intended for Korea. This drove the cost up by many times its original.

The report described that the impact extended beyond filters. Raw materials for other parts including non-woven filters, nose strips and earloops were also imported from China. Consequently, Korean manufacturers predict that face mask production may halt next Monday as a result.

The sale of face masks in Korea shot up in a few days. Many retail suppliers were sold out, regardless of whether they were online or physical stores. The report described buying face masks in Korea was akin to "plucking stars from the sky."

Government Officials suspected for hoarding masks arouses heavy public criticism

Shortage of masks in Hong Kong is increasingly severe. However, the CSI masks that are produced by female inmates and are solely for government bureaux were allegedly used as "new year gifts", causing criticism and controversy.

On February 1, a civilian surnamed Lee drove by Ta Chuen Ping Street in Kwai Chung, he saw a driver in a private car handed out 2 boxes of CSI masks and red packets for a lady, as if presenting her new year gifts.

Many people challenged government officials for being self-serving and thoughtless, refusing to share CSI masks with the public to solve their urgent needs, particularly with the elderly.

A senior supervisor of Food and Hygiene Department, surnamed Kong showed-off numerous boxes of masks on his Facebook with a comment, bragging “shortage? I don’t think so”. Yielding to heavily criticism, he later apologised that the masks did not belong to him, but these were 6-month stocks for all front-line colleagues of his team.

Li Ka Shing Foundation ordered N95 filter masks for medical staff in Hong Kong.

Since the Hong Kong government has been incapable of proscuring masks for the population, the problem of mask shortage persisted in Hong Kong.

From political groups, NGO, restaurants to individuals, those who managed to source masks distributed masks, sometimes, for free and sometimes, at a cost.

While the borders with China remain open, the demand for masks would continue in Hong Kong.

Pro-Beijing School Allegedly Imposes Political Censorship, Forbidding Students to Wear Black or Yellow Masks

Wong Kam Fai Primary and Secondary School, affiliated with Hong Kong Baptist University, was suspected of imposing #PoliticalCensorship. Stand News was informed that the school's annual journal had blurred the background in some class pictures to obscure drawings of “Pepe”, a cartoon popular amongst pro-democracy protesters.

The school was also said to have banned students from wearing black or yellow masks. Students who broke the new rule would be given demerit points. The informant told Stand News that the new rules, already being enforced by the school, were only announced verbally during morning assembly, instead of via official written notices to parents.
