Parent Concerned about Students' Safety, " I Hope my Daughters would not be Crippled or even Die"

A single parent who has two daughter currently trapped inside PolyU is interviewed by Apple Daily. She has already contacted the Kowloon Masjid and Islamic Centre for help. She also calls for other parents to stand up as well to resue their children in peaceful ways. The parent also expressed that she would not mind if her daughters are going have a criminal record. She is more worried if they could come out safe, since she has no idea if they are safe inside the campus at the moment.

Citizens Gather for Vigil Despite No Approval

19:19 | #VictoriaPark

Today is the 31st anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which happened on the 4th of June 1989. It has been estimated that thousands of lives were lost after the People's Liberation Army, under the command of the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, opened fire and rolled armoured vehicles and tanks into the square.

Despite today's vigil being one that has not been approved by the police force, people still gathered, just like what they would do on this day, every single year since '89.

Citizens also took the initiative to keep a safe distance away from each other to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Vigil Begins at Lok Fu MTR Station

19:49 | #LokFu MTR Station

Citizens have gathered outside of Lok Fu MTR Station to hold a candle light vigil in tribute to the victims of the Tiananmen Square Incident. Candles were placed to form the numbers, '64', symbolizing June 4th.

This is the first time ever in 31 years whereby the candlelight vigil to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre has been disallowed and not approved.

However, citizens were encouraged to hold their own vigils. Other similar vigils very much like the one at Lok Fu, are currently being held in different parts of Hong Kong.

for "participating in unauthorized assembly" ALONE

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, Granny Wong was arrested by the police at around 15:19 in Wan Chai for "participating in unauthorized assembly".

Granny Wong was alone when the police surrounded and took her away by a police vechicle near the police headquarters.

Earlier, some pro-democracy group in Hong Kong had filed a protest authorization request for May 30, 2021 to commemorate the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre and condemn the Chinese Communist Party for the brutal crackdown.

The protest, alongside the annual candlelight vigil that has been taking place in Hong Kong's Victoria Park since 1990, was rejected by the Hong Kong police.

On the day, police continued to stop and search passers-by near Southampton Playground in Wan Chai, which is part of the protest route supposedly.

Hong Kong Restaurant Gives Free #Candles On the Eve of #June4 Commemoration Day

On June 3, 2021, the restaurant Villa Villa Cafe & Bar, located in North Point, Hong Kong, placed boxes of candle for customers and passersby to take.

The annual candlelight vigil in commemoration of the June 4th #TiananmenMassacre has been banned by the Hong Kong police for the second year. The organizer who had been holding the #vigil in #VictoriaPark since 1990 called on Hongkongers to commemorate the pro-democracy victims of the brutal crackdown by the CCP "in each of their own way".

In their facebook page on June 2, 2021, Villa Villa Cafe & Bar wrote that they "made a wrong order of birthday candles". The restaurant welcomed fellow citizens to take them for free. The remaining candles would be donated to a church nearby.

The person-in-charge of the restaurant Mr Tse told InMedia that "everything's in the heart".

Hong Kong Artists Use Creative Means to Remember June 4 Tiananmen Massacre

Part 1:

Although the Hong Kong Police banned the annual candlelight vigil on the 32nd anniversary of #TiananmenMassacre on June 4, 2021, the cordons cannot put out the flames of remembrance.

Many artists and performers in Hong Kong held memorials in their own ways, keeping the memories of the truth alive.

Political cartoonist #ZunZi continued his 32-year tradition of drawing a June 4-themed cartoon, despite the threat of #NationalSecurityLaw.

"Considering the situation this year, it doesn't matter if anyone else is speaking up about [June 4]," he says, referring to how much satire he intended to put into this year's comic. "I need to draw more!"

Catch-22: Authority Rejects Reference Books Sent to Activist Lawyer Detained for Subversion, Due to Content about Subversion

Tonyee #ChowHangTung, the former vice-chairperson of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (#HKASPDMC), is in detention on charges of inciting subversion of state power. A lawyer by trade, she intends to represent herself in her upcoming trial, and is preparing her own defense while in custody.

In an article on her Patreon published on October 23, she mentioned that her relatives and friends recently tried to send books about the late activist Szeto Wah and the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989, but the Hong Kong Correctional Services (#HKCS) rejected them.

(Editor's note: Szeto Wah was the founder of the Hong Kong Alliance (#HKA) and was one of the most influential activists in Hong Kong who worked for decades to establish, preserve and protect Hong Kong people's democratic institutions, freedom and human rights.)

One of the books, she quoted an HKCS staff, "mentions behaviours of subverting state power". The decision could not be appealed, the staff added.

Chow questions whether the HKCS had assumed the role of the judge, making a fair trial impossible. The books are reference materials for her to prepare for her own defense in the trial, she said.

"If I can't have access to information about the Alliance and the June 4th incident, I would have no chance to find evidence to refute these accusations."

The Correctional Services have set up a perfect catch-22, she said of the arrangement. "This would guarantee the prosecution a win."

Over a dozen companies refuse to transport #PillarofShame, citing concerns over Chinese government's reprisal

The Pillar of Shame - the Tiananmen memorial at the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) which stood for more than 20 years - has been dismantled and packed away in cargo containers by the University management in the middle of the night in December 2021.

Since then, the creator of the Pillar, Danish artist #JensGalschiøt, had been attempting to ship the Pillar back to Denmark.

In a statement, Galschiøt said that his team, including lawyers, 2 shipping companies, and even the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs were involved in the effort, but they had yet to find a company to move the cargo container from storage to the container wharf.

12 shipping companies turned them down, all citing concerns over the Chinese government taking vengeance on them.

Galschiøt reiterated that he is still hopeful for success, but it remains unclear as to when the Pillar can be shipped out of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong authorities "blocked" venue for once-annual candlelight vigil for Tiananmen massacre victims for a third year running

On May 24, a local daily, Ming Pao reported that the Leisure and Cultural Service Department (#LCSD), which administers the Victoria Park soccer pitches where the rally used to take place, has suspended any bookings on June 4, the 33rd anniversary of the #TiananmenMassacre, although bookings are available on other days in the same month.

Just 3 days afterwards, on May 27, the football pitches at Victoria Park were seen fully booked on June 4 from as early as 7am in the morning. No bookings, however, were seen for the rest of June. The same daily found.

The vigil has been banned -- ostensibly for public health reasons -- for the past two years and the leaders of its organizing group, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, arrested for colluding with foreign powers under a national security law imposed by Beijing from July 1, 2020.
