Scholar Denies Commenting on Passenger Traffic Release First Day After Border With China Partially Shut
A columnist and scholar, Leung Kai-chi was asked to comment on the passenger figures released by the Immigration Department on the first day after the “selective border shutdown” was implemented. He declined to comment on whether “a sharp cut of 80%” is a double-talk of the government.
Leung shared on his Facebook page that he would rather ask the government to spend time to procure masks for locals.
However, Leung did urge the government to continue publishing detailed daily passenger figures, including the place of origin of tourists and their Visa types, for public monitoring purpose.

Frontline Medical Staff of Prince of Wales Hospital Urge Government to Ban Entry of All Chinese Mainlanders and Provide Sufficient Protective Gear
Medical staff at the Prince of Wales Hospital issued an open letter to the senior management of Hospital Authority today (January 31), asking the management to escalate their request to the government to ban entry of all mainland visitors and to provide sufficient protective equipment to frontline medical staff.
Frontline staff of the anaesthesia and intensive treatment ward as well as those in operation ward stated in the letter that they have vigilant in discharging their duty to take care patients.
However, in view of the lack of appropriate protective equipment meeting WHO standards, inadequate isolation facilities in hospital, and potentially unreliable travel and contact history self-declared by patients, frontline staff urged the government to take on stringent measures before Hong Kong's public health system crumbles.

Flight Attendants’ Association calls a strike in support of medical staff, urging government to lockdown all borders with China
The Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Flight Attendants Association appealed to members and the public that a strike doesn’t mean they are clinging to life and fear death, rather it is because they do not want front-line colleagues to bear the great risk of being infected, worrying about work safety everyday.
“Guarding the health of our colleagues, passengers and the people of Hong Kong, the Association, though reluctantly, is calling for a strike, hoping to curb the virus from being transmitted to Hong Kong and to spread the epidemic any further.”

Compulsory Quarantine in Hong Kong Takes Effect with Weak Enforcement
The Compulsory Quarantine imposed on mainland visitors entering Hong Kong came into effect on February 9. However, the first flight from mainland China was from Beijing at 1 am and arriving passengers were not required to check in at any isolation facility. They were asked to stay in their own residence for 14 days, where the government could conduct surprise inspections or make phone calls to ensure they didn’t go out. All passengers were allowed to leave on their own when no symptoms of illness was detected.
A notice was found at the airport reminding people who have been to China in the past 14 days to voluntarily declare their travel history. Immigration officers also randomly asked passengers on non-mainland flights whether if they have been to China. If the passenger answered “no”, they were allowed to pass through.

PRC Nationals on Princess Diamond Cruise to Be Evacuated With Hong Kong Citizens to Hong Kong
This arrangement has never been disclosed by the Hong Kong government and instead released by the PRC Embassy in Japan.
The first flight will take off on Feb 20 at 01:45.
Although the flights are run by Cathay Pacific and the evacuation plan was carried out by the Hong Kong goverment, Hong Kong CE Carrie Lam openly reiterated her appreciation to the PRC Embassy in Japan for arranging coaches to transport the passengers to the airport in Tokyo.
As of Feb 19, there are 621 confirmed cases of Wuhan pneumonia on the cruise.
Despite many countries having issued ban to prohibit PRC nationals from entering, the Hong Kong government had insisted to leave the borders with China open.

The SAR Government has finally sent charter flights to evacuate stranded Hong Kong citizens in China's epicenter Wuhan. The returnees will be quarantined in Fo Tan's Chun Yeung Estate, a brand new public housing estate where the actual tenants were denied in last minute after the government forcefully turned the place into a quarantine camp.
Perhaps 'unafraid' of the spread of the virus, a police officer with his mask pulled down was sighted smoking with his colleague at the quarantine camp.

They wrote that using Wuhan coronavirus or Wuhan pneumonia in daily communication and media coverage is for the sake of mass communication. The name is easier for the public to understand, compared to the formal term adopted in scientific debates or academic discussions.
Yuen and Lung expressed that during the 2013 SARS outbreak, coronavirus was found in civet cat, leading to an outright ban of game meat trading in China; however, 17 years later, the game meat market is flourishing in China. In other words, China seemed to have forgotten the hard lesson of SARS epidemic. Yuen and Lung criticized the behavior allowing fresh game meat to become food delicacy in modern cities as eye-popping.
The article pointed out directly that the South China seafood wholesale market in Wuhan was the origin of the coronavirus. The virus was spread through cross-infection and mutated from its natural host to an intermediate host and to human being, eventually causing human-to-human infection.
The Wuhan Coronavirus was described in the article as an "outcome of Chinese bad habits" which include the "indiscriminate hunt of wild animals, inhuman treatment of animals, and lack of respect for life".
