Riot police disturbed shoppers on public holiday, pointing pepper spray at a family with young kid

On Dragon Boat Festival today (June 25), netizens called for a “Shop with you” protest at Yoho Mall in Yuen Long. Riot police entered the mall to disperse the protesting crowd and they left the scene shortly afterwards. Plain-clothed officers, however, hung around in the mall and stood guard.

At around 3pm, while plain-clothed officer stopped and searched citizens on the scene, a team of riot police also barged into the mall to clear out citizens. One father, holding a box of toy on his hand, and accompanying his son started to argue with one officer who raised pepper spray at him and demanded them to leave. The second floor of the mall was later cordoned-off by police.

In the era of surveillance, face-recognising cameras intrude ou rlives. Have you wondered, how close are we to mass surveillance?

This photo was taken at Tai Po Complex in Hong Kong. Hikvision cameras are placed in the entrances and exits to monitor the temperature of passersby.

The US government had blacklisted this company earlier because it worked with the CCP to monitor minorities in Xinjiang with its face recognising technology.

In this sick city, we are only one step away from the digital prison.

Board Of Advisors Issued Statement Criticizing Director Of Broadcasting's Attempt To Turn #RTHK Into Government Propaganda Machine

Patrick Li, former Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs and current Director of Broadcasting, has been seen constantly interfering with the public broadcaster RTHK’s programs since he took office in early March 2021.

In a statement issued on March 27, 2021, 19 members of the RTHK Board of Advisors criticized Li's intention to turn RTHK into a government propaganda machine.

The statement mentioned that Li has misinterpreted editorial independence as “editorial independence of RTHK” and stressed that it should not be defined by a small group of management on their personal stance and political mission.

The statement demanded Patrick Li to immediately explain the reasons and criteria for canceling or changing programs, and abolish the mechanism of sending program proposals to the Editorial Board for pre-screening.

The petition included signatures including Barrister Randy Shek, Mr. Francis Fong, Honorary President of The Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, Ms. Phyllis Cheung, Executive Director of Hong Kong Unison, Professor Lisa Leung, Associate Professor of Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, Ms. Leticia Wong, District Council member , Mr. Warren Tam Ka-chun and Mr. Sin Chung-kai.

This petition listed a series of incidents related to Li, including the request for previewing programs such as “Hong Kong Connection”《鏗鏘集》 , “Viewpoint 31” 《視點31》; removing parts of the interview within programs of “Hong Kong Stories: The Pandemic Walker” 《香港故事:疫行者》, “LegCo Review” 《議事論事》and “The Pulse” 《脈搏》; and requesting staff to submit program proposals to an editorial committee composed of the Director and directorate staff for approval in early stages of program production.

Hong Kong Goverment Closes Down its Office in Taiwan: "Not Covid-related"

On May 18, 2021, the Hong Kong SAR government announced that the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan will be shut down immediately.

The government claimed that the decision has nothing to do with the latest Covid-19 spike in Taiwan, but refused to disclose the actual reason.

Down with the live-with-COVID believers

Above four-panel-cartoon is created by a popular artist in Hong Kong, Ar To. The cartoonist attempts to bring out real intention behind the COVID-control measures purposefully imposed in the city in the face of Omicron outbreak.

"We've got to live with surveillance!"

Hong Kong is reeling under an outbreak of Omicron infections, recording nearly 7,000 cases in a day on February 20, straining hospitals and testing centers to their limits.

An opinion poll taken last month -- at the beginning of the current outbreak -- shows that nearly two-thirds of citizens are receptive of a "live with the virus" approach similar to other countries such as the UK.

The Hong Kong government, however, had taken this outbreak as an opportunity to tighten gathering restrictions, enforce mandatory use of its controversial #LeaveHomeSafe tracking app, and carry out sudden, community-wide lockdowns and mandatory testing that last for days. As China is growing more concerned with Hong Kong's seeming inability to contain the outbreak, Carrie Lam and her government may be hard pressed into enacting more Orwellian surveillance measures in order to satisfy Beijing's demands for "dynamic zero covid" -- whatever that now means.
