Australian Minister Urges People to buy local,
McDonald’s and Domino’s Use of Local Ingredients against China’s Trade War

As the Australia-China trade dispute is getting worse, an Australian minister said that the public could help local farmers by buying local ingredients and praised fast-food chains, such as McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza, for displaying country of origin information on their websites and food packages. It allows consumers to understand how many ingredients are from Australia so that the public could support local products.

Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said to the audience in a radio interview, “You have the power. We’ve given it to you.” He praised that displaying country of origin information could help customers purchase food made from local ingredients. “McDonald’s and Domino’s have joined the campaign. Once you enter the shop, they will disclose how much of their food are actually from Australia.”

Australia and China have started a trade war, in which China has imposed restrictions on Australian exports like beef, sugar, wine and barley. The trade war has hit Australian agricultural industries.

China formalises cut to Australian coal imports, state media reports

The Chinese state reported that China has formalised import restrictions targeting Australia’s $14bn coal exports and China would prioritise imports from Mongolia, Indonesia and Russia. Also, power companies will share inventory to ensure prices do not exceed 640 yuan ($97.8) per ton.
The National Development and Reform Commission met 10 major power companies on the weekend and granted approval for them to import coal without clearance restrictions, except for Australia.

Due to China’s import restrictions, at least 60 bulk carriers holding hundreds of millions tonnes of Australian coal stranded off the Chinese coast.

ICC rejects Uighur genocide complaint against China

International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutors have rejected calls by exiled Uighurs to investigate China for alleged genocide and crimes against humanity, the chief prosecutor's office said in a report on Dec 14 2020.

The Uighurs handed a huge dossier of evidence to the court in July 2020 accusing China of locking more than one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim minorities in re-education camps and of forcibly sterilising women. But, the office of prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said it was unable to act because the alleged acts happened on the territory of China, which is not a signatory to The Hague-based ICC.
