Philippines says China violating its maritime rights

The Philippines urged China on Sunday to recall more than 200 Chinese boats it said had been spotted at a reef in the South China Sea, saying the presence of the vessels violated its maritime rights as it claims ownership of the area.Authorities said the Philippines coast guard had reported that about 220 vessels, believed to be manned by Chinese maritime militia personnel, were seen moored at the Whitsun Reef, which Manila calls the Julian Felipe Reef, on March 7."We call on the Chinese to stop this incursion and immediately recall these boats violating our maritime rights and encroaching into our sovereign territory," Defence Minister Delfin Lorenzana said. The Philippine military had conducted air and maritime patrols in the South China Sea to further validate the report, spokesman Marine Major General Edgard Arevalo said, but did not say when. The military had submitted its findings to other government agencies, and they would be used as basis for taking "appropriate actions not limited to filing diplomatic protests", he said in a statement, without elaborating."The (Armed Forces of the Philippines) will not renege from our commitment to protect and defend our maritime interest within the bounds of the law," Arevalo said.Foreign minister Teodoro Locsin, asked whether he would file a diplomatic protest over the boats, told a journalist on Twitter: "Only if the generals tell me. In my watch, foreign policy is the fist in the iron glove of the armed forces."The vessels are fishing boats believed to be manned by Chinese military-trained personnel, according to Philippines security officials. The vessels' presence in the area raises concern about overfishing and the destruction of the marine environment, as well as risks to safe navigation, a Philippine cross-government task force said late on Saturday.China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday, and calls to the Chinese embassy in Manila seeking comment went unanswered. An international tribunal invalidated China's claim to 90% of the South China Sea in 2016, but Beijing does not recognise the ruling. China has built islands in the disputed waters in recent years, putting air strips on some of them.Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and the authorities in Taipei all claim parts of the sea.In January, the Philippines protested at a new Chinese law allowing its coast guard to fire on foreign vessels, describing it as a "threat of war".The United States has repeatedly denounced what it called China's attempts to bully neighbours with competing interests, while Beijing has criticised Washington for what it calls interference in its internal affairs. The Whitsun Reef is within Manila's exclusive economic zone, the task force said, describing the site as "a large boomerang-shaped shallow coral reef at the northeast of Pagkakaisa Banks and Reefs".The task force vowed to continue "to peacefully and proactively pursue its initiatives on environmental protection, food security and freedom of navigation" in the South China Sea. Telephone Call between Chinese and Russian Foreign Ministers Accuses US of Unilateral Sanctions, Indicating Cooperation between the Two Countries in Resistance to Suppression from US

Tension between US-China and US-Russia relationship continues to heighten. In a telephone call on December 22 between Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councillor Wang Yi and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, the two foreign ministers stated that the two countries shall continue to work closely together to combat suppression from the US.

Wang told Lavrov that China and Russia share a “high quality and special” relationship. He also agreed with Russia President Putin that leaders from the two countries have built a highly mutually trusting and friendly relationship, and that both countries share much common ground on multiple issues.

Wang criticised the US of “going against the current trends and still waving its huge stick of unilateral sanctions”, and that the US “would only leave undignified records in the world”. Lavrov responded that the two nations shall firmly oppose the US’s destructive actions towards multilateralism, reinstating that suppression from the US must be resisted. He claimed that such could effectively protect international law, the mutual benefits for the two countries, as well as international stability and cooperation.

Urging the European Union to Terminate the China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI).  Lord Patten: It Shows a Delusional View of the Chinese Communist Party's Trustworthiness on the International Stage

After the arrest of 53 democratic primary election organisers and participants on 6th January by Hong Kong Police Force, the last British governor of Hong Kong, Lord Patten, issued a statement urging the international community to speak out for Hong Kong, calling for the European Union to terminate the investment agreement with China.

The statement from Lord Patten indicated that supporting democracy in Hong Kong is regarded as illegal nowadays and Hongkongers are forced to love the CCP. He called for the free democratic countries around the world to keep speaking out against Beijing’s destruction of a free society. “When terrible things are happening, we cannot look the other way”.

China and Europe jointly announced in December 2020 that negotiations for the investment agreement were completed. The agreement is set to offer better entry of the European enterprises into China market. However, the agreement is not effective until the official ratification by the European Parliament. In his statement, Lord Patten described the agreement as a “miserable draft deal” and believed that it is a “massive strategic blunder”.

EU to Sanction Chinese Officials Over Human-Rights Violations

Several diplomats said that EU beckons to target China with sanctions over human-rights abuses for the first time since the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, blacklisting four people and one entity in Xinjiang. Senior EU officials agreed to use its new human-rights sanctions regime to target the Chinese official

The sanctions including a travel ban and assets freezing, are being imposed because of Beijing’s actions in Xinjiang that the U.S. and some European capitals have labeled a genocide against the Uyghur Muslim minority.
However, the decision still needs formal sign-off, which is expected to happen when foreign ministers meet later in March.

China to try two Canadians charged with espionage 'soon': Global Times

Two Canadians, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, were arrested in December 2018 shortly after Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on a U.S. warrant. She faces charges of misleading HSBC Holdings Plc about the Chinese tech giant’s business dealings with Iran, which is under U.S. sanctions. They were formally charged with espionage in June 2020

The Global Times reported, citing an unnamed source, China will “soon” hold its first trial for Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.

Canada and the United States have repeatedly demanded that China release Kovrig and Spavor, with Ottawa calling their arrest an act of “hostage diplomacy”.

#EU report: #Beijing "Consciously dismantling" HK's One Country Two Systems

The European Commission and the High Representative have on Mar 12, 2021 reported on political and economic developments in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

EU High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell said: “Over the course of 2020, we have witnessed an alarming political deterioration in Hong Kong. The National Security Law imposed by Beijing is being used to crack down on pro-democracy forces, stifle dissent and pluralism, and erode fundamental freedoms. The arrest of dozens of pro-democracy activists in January this year confirmed that this trend is accelerating.

"China is consciously dismantling the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle in violation of its international commitments and the Hong Kong Basic Law. The regressive electoral changes approved yesterday in Beijing are yet another step down this path.”

The report highlights that, over the course of last year, Hong Kong experienced a further severe erosion of its high degree of autonomy, its democratic principles, and the fundamental freedoms that the Chinese authorities committed to protect until at least 2047. This rapid deterioration calls into question China's willingness to uphold its international obligations and its commitments to the people of Hong Kong under the ‘One Country, Two Systems' principle and the Hong Kong Basic Law.

Espionage trial starts for second detained Canadian

The trial of Michael Kovrig, who has been held in China for more than two years on espionage charges, is under way in Beijing in a closed courtroom, days after the United States raised concerns over his case at tense bilateral talks with China in Alaska. China arrested Kovrig, a former diplomat, and fellow Canadian Michael Spavor in December 2018, soon after Canadian police detained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese tech company Huawei Technologies, on a US warrant. Beijing insists the detentions are not linked to the detention of Meng, who remains under house arrest in Vancouver as she fights extradition to the United States. Jim Nickel, charge d'affaires of the Canadian embassy in China, told reporters outside the Beijing court that the trial had begun but that he has been denied access over national security reasons. Diplomats from more than 20 countries, including Canada the United States, were on site ahead of the trial. "[US] President [Joe] Biden and [Secretary of State Antony] Blinken have said that in dealing with the cases of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, the United States will treat these two individuals as if they were American citizens," William Klein, charge d'affaires of the U.S. embassy in China, told reporters as he stood beside Nickel. On Friday, Spavor, a businessman, also stood trial in a closed courtroom in the northeastern city of Dandong. That court said it would set a date later for a verdict. Canadian and other diplomats were not allowed to attend Spavor's trial on what China said were national security grounds, a lack of transparency that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called "completely unacceptable." Observers have said the likely convictions of the two men could ultimately facilitate a diplomatic agreement whereby they are released and sent back to Canada. Chinese courts have a conviction rate of over 99 percent. "Michael and Michael Spavor are innocent Canadians caught up in a bigger geopolitical dispute," Kovrig's wife, Vina Nadjibulla, told Reuters. "Their detention is profoundly unjust and our focus must remain on securing their freedom," she said. (Reuters)

Taiwan begins vaccination drive with AstraZeneca

Taiwan kicked off its coronavirus inoculation drive Monday with two top officials getting AstraZeneca shots in a bid to boost public confidence in a vaccine that has had a troubled rollout. Premier Su Tseng-chang and health minister Chen Shih-chung sat for jabs at a Taipei hospital after local authorities cleared the Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant's vaccine for use. "I am not feeling any pain at the spot or any soreness... I hope everyone can feel at ease after seeing my condition," said Su, 73, in footage televised live. Earlier this month, countries ranging from France to Venezuela to Indonesia temporarily suspended use of AstraZeneca's vaccine over fears it may cause blood clots and brain haemorrhages. But many resumed their rollouts after Europe's medical regulator last week called the vaccine – which is among the cheapest available and easiest to store – "safe and effective". Taiwan went ahead with its rollout after a committee of local experts ruled that "clinical benefits" of the vaccine outweigh risks of adverse reactions. But certain groups, including those in hormone therapy or taking contraceptive pills, are advised against the jab. Taiwan – population 23 million – has been held up as a model in containing the coronavirus with just over 1,000 cases and 10 deaths. It closed its borders early, imposed strict quarantine measures and carried out world-class contact tracing. But it has struggled to secure adequate vaccine supplies and has so far only received about 117,000 AstraZeneca doses. The island has signed contracts to purchase 10 million AstraZeneca doses, as well as around 5 million doses each from Moderna and the international Covax scheme. Germany's BioNTech said last month it still intended to provide Taiwan with shots after the island's health chief warned "political pressure" had scuppered a deal –raising concerns China might have tried to block it.
