To stop China’s Arctic Gold Mining Acquisition, Canadian Military Veteran: China may repeat the Model for South Sea
The Chinese state-owned Shandong Gold Group proposed to acquire a Canadian North-Pole gold min. The transaction was initially scheduled for completion before February next year. However, the Canadian Federal government extended the transection period for 45 days due to the national security review action. A Canadian retired major general lists the drawbacks of the transaction to the Globe and Mail, including allowing the Chinese to have the authority to use the strategically valuable Northwest Passage and the short distance to Canadian strategic infrastructure, opposing the authority to accept the acquisition.
Shandong Gold Group proposed to acquire a Canadian mining industry TMAC Resources’ North Pole gold mining in Hope Bay at CAD 230 million (around HKD 1.38 billion) in May this year. The mining location is close to the Northwest Passage, where it has high strategic value to Canada.
A Canadian retired military veteran David Fraser, was the officials to the major general, was a Canadian military commander in Afghanistan. He showed his strong opposition on this deal in an interview, pointing out that China continuously aims at being “near-Arctic power”. Once the relative mining acquisition is completed, Chinese authority can use the Northwest Passage entering the Arctic area. Fraser said that China is expanding its influence in the South Sea which can be a reference. “If China has the right for North Pole gold mining and the use of the port, how can we stop them from repeating the incidents happened there (South Sea)?”

Good on ya: Australia is bravely showing Canada the pain and promise of a principled approach to Beijing
A report by Amnesty International described Ottawa’s approach as “piecemeal and largely ineffective,” while witnesses before the Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations have described police and counterintelligence operations in similarly scathing terms.
Canada, it is true, has come under severe pressure by the Chinese government due to the matter of Huawei’ CFO. Two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, remain prisoners of the regime, nearly two years after their abduction. Restrictions have been placed on Canadian exports of beef and canola.
But Australia has been subject to all this and more. Its citizens have been victims of Chinese “hostage diplomacy” and a long list of its exports have either been hit with tariffs or effectively banned from the Chinese market.
Indeed, Australia has been “spearheading the crusade against China” in the United Nations and other international forums. Despite the fact that Australia has just two-thirds Canada’s population, and is far more dependent on Chinese trade.
Solidarity with our Australian cousins is the bare minimum that should be expected.

China Development Bank's former chairman Hu Huaibang has been sentenced to life in prison for bribery, a Chinese court said on Thursday, marking the second high-profile financial executive sentenced in a week.Hu, who was arrested last February, was convicted of receiving bribes totalling 85.52 million yuan (US$13.24 million) between 2009 and 2019, the Chengde Intermediate People's Court of Hebei Province said in a statement on its official Wechat account.Hu joined the China Development Bank in 2013 and was also the top official of the ruling Communist Party unit at one of the country's largest policy banks. He stepped down in September 2018.China Development Bank did not immediate respond when asked for comment.
