China intensifies Xinjiang propaganda push as global backlash grows

China has intensified claims that it faced a serious “terrorist” threat in Xinjiang as Beijing remained locked in a stand-off with western capitals over its sweeping security clampdown on Muslim minorities in the region. CGTN, the international arm of China’s state broadcaster, aired the final episode in a four-part documentary series that sought to justify the government’s policies by blaming international terrorist groups for violence in the region.

Western politicians and international scholars of Xinjiang have argued that Beijing’s claims of a “terrorist” threat are exaggerated and are lack of evidence for orchestrated attacks in the region.

Western brands caught between US and China over human rights

Western companies are being forced to choose between supporting human rights and profits from China, caught up in a battle the US and its allies are waging with Beijing over its persecution of Uyghur Muslims.

As China comes under scrutiny ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, human rights activists are urging companies to take a stand over the repression of Uyghurs, which the US this week formally declared was “genocide”.

The rising pressure comes as Beijing has begun whipping up nationalist opposition to brands such as Nike and H&M that have voiced concerns about Xinjiang or vowed to eliminate the use of forced labour from the northwestern Chinese region from their supply chains. While some companies have stood their ground, others have removed criticisms from their websites.

Australia Is Under Pressure to Implement Magnitsky-Style Laws

“China stop genocide of Uyghurs,” read the banners held aloft by protesters outside the Chinese consulate in Adelaide, Australia, on March 31. Members of the Uyghur community traveled across Australia to protest the newly expanded consulate, alongside supporters of Hong Kong, Falun Gong, and Tibet. Some Uyghurs held up photographs calling for the return of their family members, disappeared into the camps in Xinjiang.

The protest came a week after the United States, the European Union, Canada, and the United Kingdom coordinated sanctions against Chinese officials involved in atrocities in Xinjiang. Australia welcomed the sanctions in a joint statement with New Zealand, but it put no sanctions of its own in place.

Facebook Staff Fret Over China’s Ads Portraying Happy Muslims in Xinjiang

Facebook Inc. is blocked in China, but Beijing is a big user of the platform to spread its political views to hundreds of millions of people overseas, sometimes via advertisements.

Now, some Facebook staff are raising concerns on internal message boards and in other employee discussions that the company is being used as a conduit for state propaganda, highlighting sponsored posts from Chinese organizations that purport to show Muslim ethnic minority Uyghurs thriving in China’s Xinjiang region, according to people familiar with the matter.

The U.S. and some European governments say Beijing is committing genocide against the Uyghurs, citing a campaign that includes political indoctrination, mass internment and forced sterilizations.

China insists on dynamic clearing, Netizens complain: the more you're clearing, the less it's working

In mid-March, Chinese President Xi Jinping said to insist on a scientific and precisive dynamic zero-covid strategy. Right after, government agencies and the media commented "not wavering" and "not relaxing", showing their support for the "#DynamicZeroCOVID" strategy one after another.

The National Health Commission (NHC) of China re-emphasised at a teleconference on Friday (#Apr01) the need to firmly unify thoughts and actions with the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the decisions of the Party Central Committee and the State Council. It is to resolutely curb the spread of the epidemic to ensure that the goal of the "social zero-COVID" strategy can be achieved on time.

Many Chinese netizens asked, "How long would it last? How to achieve it on time?" in response to this target proposed by the NHC. Some other netizens used the recent Shanghai epidemic as an example to mock: "Dynamic zero-covid, the more you're clearing, the less it's working".
