US-Japan Alliance Conducts Massive Island-landing Exercise
Massive US-Japan joint military island-landing exercise reportedly took place over a two-week period from late October to early November. It is believed that the action is to show US' support for Japan in the disputed Sankaku Islands, also known as the Diaoyus in China.
On Oct 26, Commander of US Forces Japan, Kevin Schneider spoke aboard a Japanese warship that the military exercise was to demonstrate the capability "to deliver combat troops to defend the Senkakus or respond to other crises or contingencies." The massive exercise was expected to last for 10 days and ended on Nov 5.
According to CNN, the fleets include 9,000 US troops, a US aircraft carrier strike group, more than 100 US military aircraft, more than 37,000 Japanese troops, a flotilla of 20 Japan Maritime Self Defense Force warships, 100 Japanese military planes, plus a frigate from Canada -- all focused on landing large forces on islands around Okinawa.
The group of uninhabited islands, known as the Diaoyus for China and Senkakus for Japan, has been in dispute for years, but has also been under Japan's administration since 1972. Chinese ships sailing in waters near the Islands earlier this year has drawn condemnation from Japan.

Chinese Coast Guard Enters Waters Near Diaoyu Islands for 2 Consecutive Days after the Coast Guard Law Passed
After the China Coast Guard (CCG) Law taking into effect this month, Chinese coast guard vessels entered the waters near the Diaoyu Islands (known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan) for two consecutive days. The islands are under sovereignty dispute with Japan.
According to Japan's 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, two Chinese Coast Guard vessels had entered Japanese territorial waters near the Japan-claimed Senkaku Islands on Tuesday at around 4:45 a.m. Japanese authorities said that the Chinese Coast Guard vessels turned their bow toward two Japanese fishing boats and tried to approach them. The Japan Coast Guard deployed patrol boats to ensure the safety of the fishing boats and issued a warning to the Chinese Coast Guard, asking them to leave the territorial waters.

Alternate opinion: #CCP will not hesitate to wage a problems externally in order to fuel extreme nationalism within the country, when #Chinese people are suffering internal problems. Outrageous that they have vessels in Japanese waters TWICE A WEEK!

Japanese Defence Minister: Firmly Defend Senkaku Islands Territory, Taiwan is Important in Japan’s Energy Supply Lifeline
Japanese Minister of Defence Kishi Nobuo indicated in an interview with CNN that the Senkaku Islands, China-called “Diaoyu Islands”, is “undoubtedly the land of Japan”, and Japan would resolutely defend the territory while facing threats from China. He also said Taiwan is very important to Japan -- anything happening in Taiwan could directly affect Japan. The Japanese government will closely monitor Taiwan’s issues in a crisis management mode.
CNN: Kishi's speech is like preparing for a potential Sino-Japanese showdown
Kishi indicated that when facing China's actions in Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Islands) and in the East China Sea, the Japanese government has already stated their determination to maintain the territory, and the number of Coast Guard ships dispatched is also more than that of Chinese ships. He stated there is no dispute of the Senkaku Islands problem existing between Japan and other countries.
