A confirmed video game content rating system according to China State Media: No violent or bloody elements in the 18+ games
After extensive consultation with experts, industry representatives, players and parents, China state media People’s Daily Online has drafted the “Age-appropriate gaming guidance” bill.
According to the current laws and regulations in China and the physiological development, cognitive ability and level of moral development in young people, the age range for games is divided into the following four categories: ‘Above 18 years old (18+)’, ‘Above 16 years old (16+)’, ‘Above 12 years old (12+)’ and ‘Above 6 years old (6+)’. As children under the age of 6 are at the crucial stage of their visual and other developments, their individual usage of electronic devices for gaming is not recommended.
As indicated in the screenshots, the 18+ category must be free from elements of violence, sexual innuendo, gore, horror, bad language, etc.
Meanwhile, the People’s Daily Online stated that the various metrics of the draft are not rigid, and they will be updated in a timely manner based on the game's operation and feedback from the community.
People’s Daily Online will also set up an online platform to showcase enterprises participating in ‘age-appropriate tips for games’, the status of games marked with ‘age-appropriate tips’, as well as the opinions of experts on games marked with ‘age-appropriate tips’ and the latest changes to the ‘age-appropriate tips’ content.
