Pompeo signs 5G Clean Network Security joint declaration with Slovenia

The U.S. and Slovenia have signed a joint declaration on "5G Clean Network Security" that aims to keep untrusted telecommunications vendors out of Slovenia, meaning the country's 5G network will bar Chinese companies like Huawei. The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is on a visit to Central Europe, said in a press conference "Free nations must work together to confront authoritarian threats”.

Pompeo met with Slovenian officials in the mountain lake town of Bled, Slovenia, known as the "most beautiful castle" in the country. He said, "The tide is turning against the Chinese Communist Party and its efforts to control information". Over the past year, the U.S. has signed similar agreements with Poland, Estonia and the Czech Republic, pledging that 5G suppliers would not be subject to control by a foreign government without independent judicial review, which effectively excludes Chinese telecommunication equipment makers such as Huawei from their 5G network.

Huawei-built data centre a 'failed investment', Papua New Guinea says

A Huawei-built data centre in Papua New Guinea has been coined a “failed investment,” after a technical review found serious security vulnerabilities in an important piece of the country’s digital infrastructure.

There have been concerns all around the world about the security of technology made by a companies headquartered in China, where the law compels organizations and citizens to “support, assist and co-operate” with the country’s intelligence apparatus.

Cracks are starting to show in countries that have relied on China to build its digital infrastructures. They are effectively dealing with two major problems: a problem with security, and a problem with reliability.

Republic of China Debts Recalled as US Senator Introduces Resolution Demanding China to Repay USD$1.6 Trillion Debt

US Republican Senator Martha McSally put forward a resolution on Thursday demanding China to repay its sovereign debt of more than USD$1.6 trillion (around HKD$12.5 trillion), interests included, to US bondholders.

McSally said, “China has repeatedly failed to honor its obligations to America, taking American families’ money and jobs… We are holding China accountable for its debt and for unleashing the coronavirus on the world. We demand China pay back the $1.6 trillion it owes to American families.”

The bonds were issued in 1912 by the Republic of China, which subsequently migrated to Taiwan. The People’s Republic of China established its sovereignty in 1949 and insists that Taiwan is part of China. According to international law, a successor state is responsible for the debts of its predecessor.
