#Facebook: #ChineseHackers Attempt to Breach #Uyghurs Communication Devices for #Surveillance

Facebook reported that groups of Chinese hackers tried to set up fake accounts on Facebook in order to get in contact with Uyghurs overseas. After gaining their trust, they send their victims malicious links disguised as Uyghur news sites or online stores, in an attempt to install spyware on their phones for surveillance.

The report on the hacking activities was published on March 24, 2021 in which Facebook did not directly link the incident to the Chinese government, but said that the activity "had the hallmarks of a well-resourced and persistent operation". The hacking groups involved, known in the cybersecurity industry as Earth Empusa and Evil Eye, have also been involved in other surveillance activities in the past.

The hackers mainly target Uyghur human rights activists, journalists, and dissidents from Xinjiang. Most of them currently live in Turkey, Kazakhstan, the United States, Syria, Australia and Canada.

'Uphold press freedom,' EU tells China

The European Union on Friday condemned the "harassment" of foreign journalists in China after a BBC correspondent left the country in the face of legal threats and pressure from authorities.John Sudworth said he had moved to Taiwan -- along with his Irish journalist wife -- after a "full-on propaganda attack" from the authorities due to his reporting on Xinjiang rights abuses and the coronavirus pandemic."This is the latest case of foreign correspondents being driven out of China as a result of continuous harassment and obstruction to their work, coming on top of the expulsion of at least 18 correspondents last year," a spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement."The EU has repeatedly expressed its concerns to the Chinese authorities at the undue working restrictions imposed on foreign journalists and reported related harassment.""Foreign correspondents play an important role in imparting information across frontiers and contributing to strengthening mutual understanding between the EU and China."Press freedom groups say the space for reporters to operate in China is increasingly tightly controlled, with journalists followed on the streets, suffering harassment online and refused visas. At least 18 foreign correspondents were expelled by China last year, during a tit-for-tat row with the United States that decimated the international press presence in the country.Chinese state media and officials repeatedly attacked Sudworth for his reporting on alleged forced labour practices targeting Uyghur Muslim minorities in Xinjiang's cotton industry in particular.A spokeswoman for China's foreign ministry accused the BBC of spreading "a large number of fake news with strong ideological bias".But she denied the government had been behind the move to sue Sudworth and instead admonished him for leaving in a hurry and not clearing his name. At least 50 killed in Taiwan express train crash

At least 50 people were killed in Taiwan on Friday when a packed train collided with a vehicle on the tracks and then derailed inside a tunnel, in the island's worst railway accident in decades.Officials said the devastating collision was caused by a railway maintenance vehicle that slipped down an embankment above the tracks near the eastern coastal city of Hualien."(The driver) was suspected of not pulling the parking brake tight enough so the vehicle slid 20 metres... onto the train line," Feng Hui-sheng, deputy director of Taiwan Railways Authority, told reporters.Local media images from the scene showed the back of a yellow flatbed truck on its side next to the train just a few metres from the tunnel entrance. The eight-carriage train was packed with some 480 people heading down the east coast for the annual Tomb Sweeping Festival, a four-day public holiday. The Taiwan Railways Agency said 146 passengers were sent to hospital in addition to the 50 confirmed dead.A French national was among those killed while two Japanese and one Macau resident were injured. A previous statement from the agency gave a death toll of 51.One unnamed female survivor told TVBS news channel of trapped passengers -- some crying out for help, others unconscious."There were many people pressed under the seats and others on top of those seats too," she said.President Tsai Ing-wen visited an emergency response centre in the capital Taipei, and said investigators would get to the bottom of how such a deadly crash could have occurred."We will definitely clarify the cause of the incident that has caused major casualties," she told reporters."I hope the deceased can rest in peace and the wounded can recover soon."The accident occurred on Taiwan's eastern railway line around 9:30 am (0130 GMT).Pictures published by local newspaper UDN showed the front of the train inside the tunnel had been pulverised into a twisted mesh of metal.Rescuers worked for hours to reach those trapped inside the tunnel and haul them out, using buzzsaws to slice through warped sheets of metal.Footage released by the Taiwan Red Cross showed specialists with helmets and headlights had to use the roof of the stricken train to reach people inside the narrow single-track tunnel.By mid-afternoon, officials said there were no people left inside the carriages but dozens of rescuers remained on site as evening set in, according to AFP reporters at the crash scene.Due to a long history of deadly earthquakes, Taiwan has experienced rescue teams on permanent standby to deal with disasters and retrieve trapped people.People further back in the train were able to walk away from the crash comparatively unscathed.A live Facebook broadcast by UDN outside the tunnel showed a row of undamaged train carriages with rescuers helping passengers escape."It felt like there was a sudden violent jolt and I found myself falling to the floor," an unidentified female survivor told the network, saying she suffered a cut to her head."We broke the window to climb to the roof of the train to get out."The annual Tomb Sweeping Festival is an especially busy time of the year for Taiwan's roads and railways.During the festival, people return to ancestral villages to tidy up the graves of their relatives and make offerings.Taiwan's eastern railway line is usually a popular tourist draw down its dramatic and less populated eastern coastline. With the help of multiple tunnels and bridges, it winds its way through towering mountains and dramatic gorges before entering the picturesque Huadong Valley.Friday's crash looks set to be one of Taiwan's worst railway accidents on record. The last major train derailment in Taiwan was in 2018 and left 18 people dead at the southern end of the same line. That crash was the island's worst since 1991, when 30 passengers were killed and 112 injured after two trains collided in Miaoli.Thirty were also killed in 1981 after a truck collided w (1)

(Beijing's overhaul of HK's electoral system | China's response to the US consul's comments)

Chinese foreign ministry accuses US envoy to Hong Kong of ‘smearing’ recent electoral overhaul

...

Without naming US Consul General Hanscom Smith, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry’s Hong Kong office issued a statement on Friday slamming Washington’s envoy for publicly “smearing” Beijing’s imposition of the national security law last June and its sweeping revamp of the city’s political system this week.

“He made much effort to support and cheer for anti-China troublemakers who mess up Hong Kong, and threatened us with so-called sanctions. This has blatantly trampled upon the basic principles of international law and relations, and we strongly reprimand and firmly oppose that,” the spokesman said.

In a separate statement, the spokesman also criticised an op-ed by Smith published by the Post on Friday that said Beijing had “squelched democratic representation” and “dismantled” Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy with its security law and electoral overhaul.

The spokesman said the US was not qualified to meddle in Hong Kong affairs under the guise of human rights, freedom and democracy, and accused it of being “hypocritical”.

“The article twisted right and wrong,” the spokesman said. “It again exposed the United States’ deep-rooted ideological prejudice, notorious ‘double standard’, as well as its self-centred arrogance and bullying attitude.”

...

“No external forces are allowed to comment on the Hong Kong court’s lawful judgment on people such as \[Jimmy] Lai. The US envoy has damaged the rule of law by glorifying and justifying their acts,” he added.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Department of Justice said the matter was still sub judice, and no one should comment on cases in which legal proceedings were ongoing.

“It is regrettable to note that the convictions have drawn unfair criticisms with political overtones. Any assertion to suggest that ‘Beijing \[is] eroding Hong Kong’s freedoms’ is totally baseless,” the statement said.

...

The foreign ministry spokesman, meanwhile, also accused the US of only pretending to care about Hong Kong issues so as to use them to obstruct China’s progress.

“During the social unrest of 2019, the US never spoke up for anyone who suffered from the rioters’ destructive acts … We all know the Americans’ malicious intent; the Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, just don’t buy it,” the spokesman added, using a turn of phrase popularised by China’s foreign policy chief, Yang Jiechi, at last month’s summit with US diplomats in Alaska.

The spokesman also said that no one was more concerned about Hong Kong’s future than the central government.

“Those external forces, who don’t want Hong Kong and China to prosper, are doomed to fail. We call on these people to recognise the reality, change their stance and do things that are conducive to Hong Kong’s prosperity.”
