China-owned #Dahua Sees Human Rights Sanction as Proof of Technology

On October 15, less than a week after the US sanctioned Dahua and #Hikvision for human rights abuses, Dahua VP Zhu Jiangming told the PRC's National Business Daily:

"The fact that we are under the US control list shows that we indeed have a strong technological capability."

Zhu is executive VP of Dahua, a co-founder of the firm and the executive director of Leap Motor, a PRC electric car startup founded and run by Dahua executives.

Dahua has by far the largest documented presence of any surveillance provider in Xinjiang, having directly won almost $1 billion of surveillance projects with authorities there - significantly higher than Hikvision's ~$300m.

All these massive projects began as the PRC government began building up a "total surveillance state" in the region while detaining one million minorities in re-education camps.

Chinese Agents Sued for Pursuing Dissidents in US, Beijing Mouthpiece Defends Hunt as Lawful Effort Against Corruption

Eight individuals, including seven people of Chinese origin, were charged by the US Department of Justice on 28 October with pursuing and forcing the return of Chinese dissidents in America in an effort known as “Operation Fox Hunt.” According to the US authorities, the defendants were engaged in locating the homes and whereabouts of their targets and their families. In one case, the target’s elderly father was forcibly taken from China to the US as a threat. In another instance, a note was posted at the target’s residence, saying that the target’s wife and children would be fine as long as he was willing to return to China and serve 10 years in prison.

Following the announcement of the charges, the state-run Chinese tabloid Global Times and its editor-in-chief Hu Xijin claimed that the “foxes” in question were “economic criminals” and that the pursuit was an anti-corruption effort. They criticized the US for coveting the money these criminals had brought with them and having no wish for their return to China. They further claimed that those involved in the operation had always abided by the law and that the prosecution was a “political attack.”

US Lists "National Association for China's Peaceful Unification" as a Foreign Mission

The US State Department announced that they had listed National Association for China's Peaceful Unification (#NACPU) as a Foreign Mission, and had also withdrawn an agreement which promotes the local corporation between China and the US.

Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of States, said in a statement that the United Front Work Department under CCP has control on NACPU in Washington. The mission of this CCP department is to eliminate the threat to CCP governing, and to promote and expand its influence overseas. As a result, the US State Department has to label NACPU, to let outsiders recognise that the information is from Beijing.

After being a foreign mission, NACPU is required to submit a list of information to the US, including employee lists and their assets owned or leased.

According to the introduction in the Chinese United Front Work website, a group of Diaoyu activists founded NACPU in the Washington area in February 1973. They aim at insisting on the One-China principle, opposing all words and practices that split China's land and sovereignty, promoting the exchange and communication in various areas across the Straits, uniting Chinese abroad, and safeguarding the rights and interest of the Chinese. They also play a role in anti-independence and unification activities overseas.

PRC’s Taiwan Affairs Office accused Tsai Ing-wen for spreading Taiwan Independence; Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council: Defaming Taiwan’s Democracy

On 28 October 2021, the Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) of the State Council responded to the CNN interview of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, accusing her and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of spreading “Taiwan Independence” on various international arenas, once again exposing their stubborn attempts on “Taiwan Independence”. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council responded with a stern statement, saying that TAO is inciting confrontation by maliciously twisting the facts and defaming Taiwan’s freedom and democratic development.

The spokesperson of TAO Ma Xiaoguang criticized Tsai and DPP stubbornly promoting "Taiwan Independence”, deceiving international public opinion and covering “Taiwan Independence” under “Democracy and Freedom”. He further said ever since the DPP came to power, their incompetence in governance caused grievances among the general public, creating conflicts among ethics groups, deceiving the public and dividing Taiwan society, severely dividing the bloodline connection between Taiwanese, Chinese culture and Chinese, “seriously harming” the fundamental interest of all Taiwanese.

American Institute in Taiwan: Deep Concern on China Damaging Taiwan Strait's Stability

#SandraOudkirk, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, hosted her first press conference in #Taiwan on Oct 29.

She indicated that the current peace and stability around the #IndoPacific region and the #TaiwanStrait align with the interest of the #US. But she expressed deep concern about #China's act of destabilising the Taiwan Strait. Therefore, the US will work hard to help Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defence capabilities.

Oudkirk did not comment on #TsaiIngwen's first confirmation on the #USmilitary training in Taiwan but reiterated that the US's support to Taiwan is rock-solid. She also did not respond on whether to increase the amount of United States Marine Corps at the #AmericanInstituteinTaiwan.

She did not make a remark on the staff number of the institute and their original groups, only saying that the organisation team is outstanding.
