Nike, H&M face China fury over Xinjiang cotton 'concerns'

State media outlets have since launched campaigns defending Xinjiang cotton and criticising the brands. H&M and Nike and are facing a backlash in China after they expressed concern about the alleged use of Uighur forced labour in cotton production. Many Chinese have called for boycotts and celebrities have cut ties and e-commerce platforms have dropped H&M.

Several Western countries sanction China over serious human rights violations against the Uighur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang autonomous region. The sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, target senior officials in the north-west region.

Media in the Netherlands: #Huawei Might Have Sent Users' Data to China

According to the media outlet de Volkskrant in the Netherlands, the local telecommunication company Telfort was aware sincec 2011 that the Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei could access the data of over millions of users without a trace.

This is revealed in an internal report of KPN, the parent company of Telport; however, the company has never informed relevant department such as the Data Protection Authority (#DPA) and their customers.

Scholars pointed out the possibilty of having the data channeled to China, although Huawei denied that data has been shared.

Exclusive: Investors press companies on human rights in Xinjiang

The group of more than 50 investors, backed by the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, said it is in the process of contacting more than 40 companies, including H&M, VF Corp, Hugo Boss and Zara-owner Inditex, requesting more information about their supply chains and urging them to quit situations that could lead to human rights abuses.

The investor alliance alleged that companies removing or moving statements in relation to Xinjiang were doing so in fear of commercial retaliation from the Chinese government. It also said compliance rules were being developed in other markets, including the European Union, obliging them to fully disclose their supply chains.

Chinese #Drones Company #DJI denies accusations of leaking Ukrainian Military Secrets

#MediaMarkt, a German electronic retailer, removed all DJI products from their shelves last week, after sources confirmed that the Chinese drone manufacturer has been leaking Ukrainian Military secrets and locations to Russia.

DJI has responded on Twitter earlier this week, denying any breach of data.

Pulling all the DJI products from over 800 stores across 12 EU countries and Turkey, MediaMarkt only stated that immediate action was needed due to their responsibilities as a corporate, without any further explanation to the cause of the pull. However, in a response to an enquiry from the internet, the company claimed that DJI has been leaking the GPS data of Ukrainian army to Russia, and that they would follow up with situation as it develops.
