US State Department Calls on Global Opposition to Criticize Xi Jinping's Violation on his South China Sea Militarization Promise
The US State Department criticized the Chinese President Xi Jinping by name for failing to fulfill his promise on not to militarize the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
Morgan Ortagus, the US State Department Spokesperson, issued a statement entitled China’s Empty Commitment in the South China Sea. It stated that on September 25, 2015, Xi Jinping stood in the Rose Garden of the White House and publicly said he would not militarize the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, but the CCP failed to commit. Over the years, China has actively deployed anti-ship cruise missiles on the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, expanded its military radar and signal intelligence capabilities, as well as has built dozens of fighter hangars and runways.
Ortagus pointed out that the CCP used militarized outposts as a coercion platform in an attempt to control the South China Sea. It dispatched hundreds of maritime militia vessels and coast guard vessels to constantly harass fishers from other countries as well as hinder legal enforcement activities, fishing activities, oil and gas development projects of neighboring countries. She added that many countries have formally complained to the United Nations in recent months unprecedentedly about China’s illegal activities in the South China Sea. She called on the international community to oppose China’s "unacceptable and dangerous behaviors" and let China know that the international community will definitely pursue to the end. "We (the United States) would continue to stand with our Southeast Asian allies and partners," she said.

Six Taiwanese Cities Listed Under China by Global Coalition. Taiwan Fought for Revision with EU's Help
The Brussels-based “Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy” had listed six cities, including Taipei and Kaohsiung, under "China" on its website, prompting protests from the Taiwan authorities and citizens of the six cities. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that with the efforts of all parties, the coalition has made corrections and grouped the cities under "Chinese Taipei". Foreign Affairs also revealed that the European Union (EU) had helped correct the names. Reuters described Taiwan's victory as a rare one under increasing pressure from China.
The six Taiwanese cities named as belonging to China include Taipei, Kaohsiung, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Tainan and Taichung. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the six member cities issued joint statements protesting the issue. With EU's help, the coalition has reverted to its original designation of Chinese Taipei, a name Taiwan used in its membership application.

(28 Sep) Xinhua News Agency published a commentary stating that forced closure of Confucius Institutes was a form of political persecution. The article indicated that anti-China politicians from the US were unable to see the good in others and were intolerant of other cultures. Wielding their big stick [policy] of political oppression against Confucius Institutes that promote Chinese culture, it lambasted, was "isolationist rhetoric" possessed by "McCarthyism". There was no cure to pursuing political self-interest in lieu of virtue and suppressive paranoid delusions.
The article also pointed out that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent threat to shut down all Confucius Institutes in higher education institutions by the end of this year constituted further defamation and suppression. 'Frosty' economic times with China likely to continue despite release of two Michaels
Relations between Ottawa and Beijing are not likely to warm up anytime soon despite the release of the two Michaels, reinforcing the need for Canada to pursue a revamped Asian economic strategy, some China-watchers said Monday.
On Saturday, Canadian businessman Michael Spavor and diplomat Michael Kovrig arrived back in the country after Chinese authorities had detained them for more than 1,000 days. Their detention followed and was widely seen as a response to a U.S. extradition request for Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. executive Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Vancouver in December 2018.
