China-backed high-speed rail link opens in Indonesia

Indonesia has launched Southeast Asia's first high-speed railway, a joint venture with China that President Joko Widodo hailed as "a symbol of our modernisation".He declared the official operation of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway at Halim Station in Jakarta on Monday morning.With a top speed of 350 kilometres per hour, the bullet train "Whoosh" can get between the capital and Bandung in 45 minutes. The 140km journey would previously have taken about three hours by train."The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train marks our efficient, friendly and integrated mass transportation system," Widodo said."It is a symbol of our modernisation in the public transport, seamlessly connecting with other modes of transportation."Representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia, China Railway International Group, and PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China – a joint venture consortium between Chinese and Indonesian firms that builds and runs the project – attended the ceremony.The US$7.3 billion high-speed line is part of the Belt and Road Initiative.Last month, Premier Li Qiang joined a senior Indonesian minister, Luhut Pandjaitan, on a ride aboard the train during his Jakarta visit for summits with Southeast Asian leaders. Evergrande shares soar as trading resumes on HKSE

Shares in mainland property giant Evergrande soared as trading resumed on Tuesday, following a suspension last week when the heavily indebted company announced its boss was under criminal investigation.In early trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, prices jumped more than 60 percent before dropping to ten percent and then rising again.The resumption follows an application notice filed late on Monday, though there was no such request for the firm's electric vehicle unit.A separate statement said trading for Evergrande Property Services would also re-start at 9 am (0100 GMT) Tuesday.Media reported last Wednesday that Evergrande boss Hui Ka-yan was being held by police, in the latest twist for the property behemoth.The firm then confirmed Thursday that Hui was suspected of "illegal crimes" following the suspension of its shares from trading.No specific reason was given for the decision to suspend trading, which also affected the company's property services and electric vehicle units.Evergrande estimated it had debts of US$328 billion at the end of June.The company said last month it was unable to issue new debt because its subsidiary, Hengda Real Estate Group, was being investigated and key meetings planned for debt restructuring were shelved.The firm said it was "necessary to reassess the terms" of the plan in order to suit the "objective situation and the demand of the creditors".Its property arm missed a key bond payment last week, and Chinese financial website Caixin reported that former executives had been detained. China and Germany agreed to strengthen economic cooperation and open up financial markets to spur economic growth and counter global challenges after resuming high-level talks in Frankfurt.

Both sides agreed to strengthen policy coordination and defend global financial security and global trade rules, according to a statement published by the Chinese finance ministry after the talks between vice-premier He Lifeng and German Finance Minister Christian Lindner.

The talks came at a time when the two countries are struggling to manage the risk of economic downturn and follows the publication of a German plan to “de-risk” its relationship with China by reducing its reliance on goods produced in the country.
