Americans’ Views on China Go From Bad to Worse
A series of recent U.S. public opinion polls show some of the frostiest views ever toward China and indicate growing support for the Biden administration to take tougher stands aimed at influencing Beijing’s behavior.
The polls suggest political rhetoric and negative headlines about China are adding to a rise in negative perceptions about the country, which increasingly focus on human-rights concerns.
A Gallup poll, released early March, put China’s unfavorable view among Americans at 79%, by far the worst reading since its polling began in 1979. Only Iran and North Korea scored worse.
While American views of China had already been hardening in recent years, a clash of ideologies came to a head in 2020 as Covid-19 spread world-wide amid signs Beijing initially played down its seriousness when it was detected there.

‘Dependency’ of UK universities on China creates risks, report says
The report, led by former universities minister Jo Johnson, is the first comprehensive assessment of Sino-British research collaboration, counting the number of papers co-authored by academics in both countries. The number of academic papers co-authored by Chinese and British researchers rose from 750 per year in 2000 (1% of UK output) to 16,267 in 2019 (11% of UK output).
At least 20 subjects, including many in science and technology, collaborations with China now account for more than a fifth of high-impact research. In the highly sensitive areas of automation, telecommunications and materials science, more than 30 per cent of papers were Sino-British partnerships.

China's Communist party ran campaign to discredit BBC, thinktank finds
China’s Communist party (CCP) orchestrated an international campaign to undermine the BBC and discredit its reporting during the first two months of the year, using western social media networks. Posts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube which platforms are blocked in mainland China, were uploaded by diplomatic and state media accounts, and pro-Beijing influencers, and then amplified by troll networks.
Three main approaches were repeatedly deployed to try to undermine critical reporting from the UK’s public broadcaster.
The posts claimed that the BBC was biased and spreads disinformation, alleged that domestic audiences in the UK don’t trust its reporting, and said that its coverage of China is instigated by spy agencies or foreigners hostile to Beijing.

China has given away millions in its digital yuan trials. This is how it works
The People’s Bank of China has been developing the digital yuan, a so-called central bank digital currency (DCEP) that aims to replace some of the cash in circulation.
China has already started real-world trials for the digital currency in a number of cities including Shenzhen, Chengdu and Suzhou.
The digital yuan could increase competition in China’s mobile payments market which is dominated by Ant Group’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat Pay.
The digital yuan is different from Bitcoin, which is a so-called decentralized cryptocurrency. That means that it is not controlled by any central authority like a central bank, unlike the digital yuan which will be issued by the PBOC.
