China not only monitors the speech of oversea Chinese students, but also coerces them to as internet undercover agents
(29 Oct) LI TaoTao (LI), a aged-20 Chinese student currently in US-Washington, has received lots of video calls from China PRC-National Security Bureau (NSB) in midnights since Jun 2020.
LI came from a northern city in China and studying aboard in United States now. He always criticized the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on his social medias accounts, i.e Instagram, twitter and a discussion platform for talking about China democracy.
In Jun 2020, NSB firstly approached him for the purpose to threaten him not to talk about CCP on social media anymore, by endangering his parents who are residing in China. NSB confiscated the passports of his parents indeed.
A call record was furnished by LI to the Voice to America (VOA), the content is about that NSB called LI soon later and requested LI to retain one of his three social media accounts by monitoring the speech therein, NSB told LI that he could be free of his criminal liability by doing so. NSB told LI that his offence is “Anti-Chinese”, but the NSB caller was never able to clearly explain the offence in detail committed by LI. LI opined it was unreasonable that he only criticised Chinese government on the social media, that was irrelevant with “Anti-Chinese”.
VOA found there are many cases similars with LI in the United States. The Chinese government has closely monitored and threatened many Chinese citizen in the United States for a long period of time; which raised the awareness and concerns from the US Governments.
In 2018, local governments in China have increasing their involvements in the overseas affairs of Chinese students or activities, causing by Central government requested local governments to strictly manage its own local citizens in 2005; which was shared by CHEN Yonglin to VOA. CHEN is a former China diplomat who sparked fears of diplomatic incident through his defection to Australia in 2005.
On 28 Oct 2020, US Government officially announced that NACPU, an Organization controlled by China, was categorized as “foreign mission”. Before that, Washington had already classified many Chinese medias in US and Confucius Institutes US Centers as “foreign mission”.
In the same week of 28 Oct, US’s News-week publicized the result of its 4-months investigation that: Around 600 Organizations in US are confirmed in connection with the overseas influenced activities arranged by China. These Organizations attempted to create US community splits and incite crisis before the US election 2020. Professionals described such election related-activities revealed by News-week were just the tips of the iceberg.
