Hong Kong Court-apported liquidator attempts to take control of the
#AppleDailyTaiwan Assets

On November 26, 2021, the Taiwan based Economic Democracy Union (#EDU) warned potential breaches of human rights and national security ramifications after a Hong Kong court-appointed liquidator sought permission to order Taiwan-based #AppleDaily and #NextMagazine to turn over all of their assets.

The union, a consortium of non-governmental organizations, urged the Taiwan government to take immediate action to ensure that Hong Kong’s #NationalSecurityLaw would have no foothold in #Taiwan.

According to a lawyer of the EDU, Taiwan would be in its rights to ignore the demands because they have not been reviewed by Taiwanese courts, and because Taiwanese courts can decline to enforce foreign laws.

Likewise, the EDU has framed the issue as significant in needing to prevent the Hong Kong National Security Law from encroaching upon Taiwanese sovereignty. The EDU also emphasized the potential dangers if the Apple Daily turned over information to Hong Kong authorities as a result of the seizure of its assets.

The liquidator is court-appointed, following the Apple Daily’s closure in June 2021. Hong Kong courts also froze 18 million Hong Kong dollars in company funds, preventing it from paying its workers, not long after courts moved to freeze assets of company CEO #JimmyLai.

In the Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) annual report 2021, it revealed that the number of journalists jailed around the world had set another record in 2021, with #China remains the world’s worst jailer of journalists for the third year in a row, with 50 behind bars.

As for Hong Kong, it said that 2021 "marked a sad milestone".

"For the first time journalists in the former British colony appear on CPJ’s annual survey of journalists unjustly imprisoned for their work. Eight. Zero to eight in one year."

Hong Kong Court Asks Man to Change Mask With Suspected Protest Iconography

#CarolNg, former chairperson of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU) and one of the “#NSL47”, has been remained under custody. She has requested bail on #Dec20, 2021 to the High Court, and the application was processed by Esther Toh Lye Ping, one of the designated judges for any #NationalSecurityLaw-related cases.

A court observer have worn a yellow and black mask with the #Bible verse (Amos 5:24), “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream,” embroidered on it.

He was denied entry by security and court personnel under orders of the judge, and demanded that he change his mask before he would be allowed entry. They have not explained their reasons behind this act.

The observer was disgruntled by the request, and questioned, “If my clothes were not allowed in court, do I have to take them off them too?”

A similar incident also happened on #Dec17, 2021, when former head of the English edition of Apple Daily #LoFung (Fung Wai-kwong) requested bail.

Before the hearing began, Toh, through her secretary and Bailiffs, required observers wearing yellow masks or wearing hoodies with yellow umbrella insignias to change into “more appropriate” clothing, or be led away from the courtroom.

Some observers have questioned the requirement, questioning that those were “unsuitable” clothing, to which the Chief Bailiff stated, “it is inappropriate,” without further explaination.

In a nutshell, #CCP accuses the now defunct #AppleDaily of making people hate the government and #Beijing. Nope, people hate you because you are an a**hole - you beat us, shot us, rape us, make up crimes and throw our elected representatives into prison without trials, kills everything we hold dear.

Crackdown on Stand News is China's First Step in Controlling the World's Narrative, says Former #NextDigital Director

The day after Stand News was forced to shut down by Hong Kong Police, Hong Kong Democracy Council (#HKDC) held a rapid response virtual briefing on December 30, 2021, in which the speakers urged the international community to closely monitor the developing situation.

Not only is freedom of press under attack in Hong Kong, they said, the incident also signifies important future challenges, such as the possibility of China manipulating the world in the future.

The invited speakers were #ThomasKellogg, executive director of the Center for Asian Law at Georgetown University; and #MarkClifford, former independent non-executive director of Next Digital.

As a former director of Next Media, Clifford saw firsthand the government's oppression against Apple Daily, which began even before the National Security Law (#NSL) took effect on June 30, 2020. The crackdown against Stand News had been rumored to be coming for some time; even so, when it finally became reality, Clifford felt it deeply.

"What's happening at Stand News is tragic," Clifford said, "Perhaps not a complete surprise, because we have seen what happened at Apple Daily. It's extraordinary when you're on the other end of state power - unchecked state power. In a city like Hong Kong, it's hard to believe."

The arrests and forced closure of Stand News happened soon after the conclusion of the legislative elections. Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang had twice written to the Wall Street Journal to criticize their reporting of the Hong Kong Elections, even calling its editorials "sickening".

Clifford said that this had not been a coincidence; rather, it reflects the Chinese Communist Party's ambitions to control the world's narrative.

China-owned Media Accuses Taiwanese Scholar of Violating Hong Kong's #NationalSecurityLaw

In an article published on January 6, 2022, Ta Kung Pao, a China-owned newspaper printed in Hong Kong, accused Wu Rwei-ren, a political science scholar affiliated with Academic Sinica in Taiwan of violating Hong Kong's national security law.

The pro-Beijing newspaper made its claim based on an essay Wu wrote in February 2020, before the National Security Law was passed on June 30, 2020. The essay received the Human Rights News Award of the Hong Kong Journalists Association in 2021.

Wu responded that following the crackdown on independent news outlets like Stand News and Citizen News in Hong Kong, Beijing is trying to threaten international scholars who support Hong Kong.

Wu believes that Beijing will not be able to achieve the goal, as its acts have demonstrated the difference between the laws set up by the regime under the Chinese Communist Party and those practiced in democractic countries.

Hong Kong National Security Law: Albeit disliking the Chinese Communist Party #CCP, youngsters in Hong Kong are still loving China.

Ying-shih YU: now is the best time to fight for democracy in Hong Kong.

The Liberty Times, a Taiwanese publisher continued posting footages and manuscripts of the last interviews conducted by Hong Kong press of the Chinese #Historian Ying-shih Yu.

The last episode mentioned that Yu described Beijing forcefully implementing National Security Law #NationalSecurityLaw in #HongKong ‘an unprecedented incident’, showing the Chinese government had already decided to include Hong Kong in its totalitarian regime.

This episode focused on discussing ‘#PatrioticEducation’. Yu reckoned it was the Chinese Communist regime that the younger generation in Hong Kong despised, and that they still loved China, and were fighting for a democratic, liberal, lawful and rights-protecting China.

He emphasised that ‘now is the best time to fight for democracy in Hong Kong.’

#Beijing Attempts to Silence Consulates' June 4th Commemoration in Hong Kong

On the eve of June 4th, Beijing's foreign affairs office in Hong Kong sent warning to different consulates, asking them not to "make any gesture" on June 4, 2022.

June 4th 2022 marks the 33 year-mark of the Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing, where the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) government brutally cracked down pro-democracy civilians in 1989.

Commemorative events such as candlelight vigil had been annually held in Hong Kong until the enforcement of the #NationalSecurityLaw in 2020.

Beijing's office claimed that the commemorative activities in Hong Kong were organized by "a small fraction of anti-China people with hostility towards the Chinese government". According to CCP, there is "no need to remember June 4th".

On June 4, 2022, the US consulate and the Australia consulate in Hong Kong posted the Pillar of Shame and a candlelight image on their social media platform respectively, in commemoration of the victims of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre. The Polish Consulate-general fearured candles in their social media post. Both the US consulate-general and the #EuropeanUnion office in Hong Kong lit candles on their windows.

Student Activists from #StudentPoliticism plead guilty to "conspiring to incite subversion"

Four former members of the now-disbanded pro-democracy group "Student Politicism" were charged with "conspiring to incite subversion". Former convenor Wong Yat-chin (aged 21), ex-secretary general Chan Chi-sum (aged 21), and ex-spokespersons Jessica Chu (aged 19) and Alice Wong (aged 20) were presented at the District Court in Hong Kong on July 29, 2022. They pleaded guilty.

Apart from Chu, the other three members have been detained for more than 10 months.

They were prosecuted for holding street booths on seven occasions between October 2020 and June 2021. The prosecution alleged that the group called on fellow citizens to "keep on fighting" and chanted the slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our times".

UK-Based HongKonger's Groups Criticised pro-Beijing Organisations Cleansing the National Security Law with Human-sea Tactics

The 73rd Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Conference will be held within 2 weeks. UK-based HongKongers organisations found that many pro-Beijing organisations submit reports to this conference, strongly promoting the National Security Law (#NSL). They intended to rationalise the fact of Beijing’s corrosion to the rights in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Scots, a UK-based HongKongers’ organisation, indicated that Beijing utilised Human-sea tactic after being criticised in the United Nations Commission on Human Rights last year to promote the suppression of Hong Kong people in the United Nations. As the submitted content from various groups of people is similar, it is suspected to interfere with the trial of Hong Kong Human Rights in the United Nations, demonstrating “head count takes over the truth with limited evidence”.

According to Freedom House's latest report, Hong Kong's freedom score has dropped to 41 out of 100, categorized as "partly free." The city received 0 points in several areas, including political rights, political pluralism, and government operations. The implementation of the National Security Law and changes to the electoral system were cited as significant infringements on the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. Hong Kong's political rights have been heavily curtailed, with the Chief Executive election and Legislative Council composition being controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. In contrast, Japan and Taiwan scored the highest in Asia, while mainland China received a mere 9 points. #FreedomReport #VanishingHongKong #NationalSecurityLaw #DisappearingDemocracy
