China’s new green target still means pumping too much pollution
In China’s 14th five-year plan, the target of greenhouse gas emissions announced were disappointing. Beijing has not set a specific target for emissions, nor has it brought forward from 2030 when it expects them to peak. The only carbon target announced, reducing emissions per unit of gross domestic product by 18% over five years, was the same as in 2016.
The reality is that the world needs to reduce emissions as quickly as possible and China currently accounts for 30% of global production. It’s the only major economy that saw an increase last year after the pandemic hammered economic growth elsewhere, according to research firm Rhodium Group.
Climate scientists fear that China’s modest targets may not slow rising emissions quickly enough.
“China will not be back on the path of decarbonization until Beijing controls the coal construction boom and allows its Covid takeover,” Greenpeace’s Li said.

China’s Race to Net Zero Emissions Gets Off to a Slow Start
China’s first road map to achieving net zero emissions by 2060 may be too slow to stop the world’s biggest polluter from hastening global warming.

Plans announced yesterday will extend Beijing’s powers of appointment to the Hong Kong parliament and grant it a veto over all candidates.
Li Keqiang, the Chinese prime minister, announced that Beijing would “perfect” the constitutional orders in Hong Kong to safeguard national security for long-term prosperity.
