Government blocks motion to recognise China's treatment of Uighurs as genocide

The federal government and Labor blocked the motion proposed by Independent senator Rex Patrick to the Chinese government's actions against the Muslim minority as "genocide".

“It is most regrettable that Coalition and Labor Senators combined to block a vote on a motion that recognises the incontrovertible fact that the Chinese Government is engaged in a campaign against the Uyghur people that constitutes an international crime within the scope of the 1948 Genocide Convention," Senator Patrick said.

Liberal Senator Jonathan Duniam said the government did not believe the motion was an appropriate means of addressing the human rights concerns. Labor Senator Katy Gallagher also said the party strongly condemned the "human rights violations" against Uighurs and other ethnic minorities.

After Chinese-funded factory was arson, the Myanmar military and police enter and kill at least 39 people

Anti-China sentiment has risen in Myanmar. After a Chinese factory was attacked, police and military were sent to demonstrators’ settlement in Hlaing Tharyar district on Sunday, 14 Mar, 2021., killing at least 22 people in the poor industrial suburb.

Moreover, at least 16 demonstrators were killed in the bloody suppression in other regions and one police died in the confrontation, pushing up the death toll to 39 in one day and making it the bloodiest day since the military coup on February 1, 2021.

Burmese people are dissatisfying China for not condemning the military takeover, suspecting Beijing’s acquiescence in, or even connivance with the military coup. Days of military crackdowns have caused people to vent their anger on local Chinese companies.

There were Chinese-funded clothing factories being set on fire in Hlaing Tharyar, the China Embassy also claimed there were on duty officials being beaten, some Chinese-funded hotels were getting attacked. There was no organisation admitted the responsibility yet. The protest leader Ei Thinzar Maung said on Facebook, “If you want to do business in Myanmar stably, then respect Myanmar people.”

After some Chinese-funded companies being attacked, the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar announced a statement urging the military government to take actions, “China urges Myanmar to take further effective measures to stop all acts of violence, punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law and ensure the safety of life and property of Chinese companies and personnel in Myanmar.” But the statement did not mention anything about police brutality and military suppression. The Facebook page of the embassy got lots of negative comments in Burmese from netizens.

2 Chinese men arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 2 Ukraine babies

On March 14, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that border guards at the Porubne Border Crossing Point in Chernivtsi Oblast had foiled an attempt by foreigners to take babies out of Ukraine.

According to the border guard, two Chinese citizens tried to walk across the border into Romania while carrying two infants.

When questioned by border guards, the two Chinese men were not able to provide an explanation about where the children came from.

After conducting an investigation, the State Border Guard Service found that "shortly before this (incident), both Chinese had arrived in the territory of our country without children."

Traffickers are targeting parentless children on the Ukraine-Poland border, says a group evacuating orphanages in the war zone. They say thousands are unaccounted for and fear some may already have fallen prey to people traffickers.
