DPP's Representative Chen Chi-mai Elected as Taiwan's Kaohsiung Mayor

Chen Chi-mai, spokesperson of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, won the mayoral by-election in Kaosiung, Taiwan on August 15 by a wide margin.

The former mayor Han Kuo-yu of the Kuomintang (KMT), the opposition camp in Taiwan, was ousted after receiving heavy criticism of his Beijing-friendly stance and following a recall vote in June, 2020.

According to the Kaohsiung City Election Commission, Chen received over 70 percent of the votes, while the KMT candidate Jane Lee marked the lowest number of votes the opposition party has obtained in Kaohsiung since 2014. Chen promised to focus on industrial transformation, job creation, the reduction of air pollution and building transport infrastructure in the city.

Taiwan’s Legislature Passes Motion to Resume Diplomatic Relations with US, Beijing Protests

Taiwan’s legislature has passed a motion proposed by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) to restore diplomatic relations with the US.

Proposed by the KMT’s parliamentary caucus, a motion on restoring diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the US and another on requesting American assistance in resisting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) were passed without objection.

Taiwan’s premiere Su Tseng-chang said the KMT had been responsible for the end of Taiwan’s diplomatic relations with the US and it was good that it had come to follow its conscience. Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it will continue to deepen its relations with the US in such areas as politics, international participation, economy and trade, and security.

In Beijing, the Taiwan Affairs Office has repeatedly stated that it is resolutely opposed to any form of official exchanges between Taiwan and the US, and that those plotting independence and secession would meet a dead end.

#Google Wrongly Displays the Establishment Year of the Republic of China on Taiwan's National Day

On Oct 10, 2020, as Taiwan was celebrating its the National Day, Google also wrongly displayed the establishment year of the Republic of China (#ROC), stating the year as 1949.

Based on history, the Republic of China was established in 1912 following the collapse of the Qing dynasty. The ROC had been run by the Nationalist Government (#Kuomintang; #KMT) with a base in China, until the Communist Chinese Party's takeover of China in 1949. The year 1949 displayed by Google was the time when the KMT was relocated to Taiwan and the establishment year of the People's Republic of China (#PRC), but not the ROC.

Taiwan's Apple Daily contacted Google Headquarters in the US. Google replied by saying that they needed to undergo further investigations in order to come arrive at a conclusion for the problem.

China's President Xi Jinping warns of 'grim' Taiwan situation in letter to opposition

The situation in the Taiwan Strait is "complex and grim", Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote in a congratulatory letter on Sunday to the newly elected leader of Taiwan's main opposition party, who has pledged to renew talks with Beijing.

Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) elected as their leader on Saturday former New Taipei City mayor Eric Chu who said he would rekindle stalled high-level contacts with China's ruling Communist Party.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has stepped up military and political pressure to force the democratically ruled island to accept Chinese sovereignty, even though most Taiwanese have shown no interest in being governed by Beijing.

Forwarded from Hong Kong Democracy Movement (HKDM2)
"In the rain, Taiwanese and Hong Kongers unite. They brave the downpour, holding signs that say 'Drenched to the toes but never giving up,' reminiscent of the 1.7 million-strong Hong Kong rally on August 18, 2019. Carrying yellow umbrellas and supplies from Apple Daily, they come to show their support. Along the way, people assist in carrying the items, understanding the importance of standing against the evil law for freedom. He is an organizer of the solidarity gathering, witnessing the transformation from being a spectator during the Sunflower Movement ten years ago to actively participating now. His emotions are mixed, feeling touched but also wary. He believes that Taiwan's democracy will continue to progress after the Sunflower Movement, but recent events reflect potential setbacks or the exploitation of the democratic system."
