China expert Jerome Cohen – Do not give up, China will be better when Xi leaves the scene

Professor Jerome Cohen has been studying China and contributing to international peace since 1960s. Of late, he has closely followed the developments in Hong Kong, posting his opinions on the national security law on his blog on an almost daily basis.

While this is not the end Hong Kong, according to Cohen, free speech and due process of law in Hong Kong are gone, and “it will be more and more like the mainland.”

Every aspect of the law concerns him, the legal process, necessity of the law, human rights, residential surveillance, arbitrary detention, selection of judges, trials in China and the conviction rate of over 99% in mainlnd courts to name a few. He is particularly concerned about the impact of the sweeping law on a city he loves.

Officials have claimed that while enacting the law, the authorities will uphold human rights, the presumption of innocence, and other freedoms in accordance with International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Basic Law. But Cohen calls this “eye candy” and nonsense.

"The ICCPR says anyone subject to criminal trial is entitled to [be tried in] fair, independent, impartial courts. What they’re planning is a plain violation of the protections of the ICCPR.”

Yet, he argued, had China had a more liberal leadership, things could have turned out very differently, and one has to take a long term view.

"China is now much better than Mao's era, and when Xi leaves the scene, there will be a return to a better life."

To HongKongers, Cohen advised, “Perhaps Hongkongers have to think about the fate of people in post-war Prague, Budapest, Warsaw and East Berlin."

Hong Kong Pro-democracy Trade Unions Commemorate CCP-'Suicided' #LiWangYang for Fighting Against Totalitarian Power

On June 6, 2021, the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU), a pro-democracy labour rights group, held a memorial for Chinese dissident Li Wangyang (1950-2012) who passed away on the day 9 years ago in 2012.

After being jailed by the Chinese authorities for 21 years, Li who had become blind and nearly deaf by then was found dead in a hospital room. The #ChineseCommunistParty (#CCP) government initially claimed that Li had "committed suicide".

Li's sudden death -- which took place just a few days after he in an interview called for the vindication of the 1989 June 4th #TiananmenMassacre -- had stirred up outcry in Hong Kong and abroad. The real cause of his death remained in the shadow.

The HKCTU organized a commemorative event to pay tribute to Li's perseverance in fighting against the regime.

#ChowHangTung, vice chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China who was arrested by the Hong Kong police on the morning of June 4, 2021, joined the memorial on bail.

Chow said, "The regime does not win even by imprisoning us. As long as we manage to reinforce the movement during the process, we are not losing."

#June9 2019: One Million Hongkongers Protest Against Extradition to China

Two years ago, at least one million Hongkongers took it to the street, opposing the government's plan to implement extradition to China.

The worst fear of the local population has been the loss of right, freedom and the rule of law in the growing presence of China.

The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (#AntiELAB) Movement thereby began.

Two years on, freedom-loving Hongkongers have been facing unprecedented challenges upon the authorities' crackdown on #CivilSociety and #protest activities, in addition to the forceful imposition of the #NationalSecurityLaw.

Just on #June4, 2021, the Hong Kong police banned the #CandlelightVigil in commemoration of the victims of the 1989 #TiananmenMassacre for the second time. In face of suppression, Hongkongers showed the world their perseverance, creativity and solidarity to make their voice heard.
