China's Internet censors suggested contents mocking #XiJingping

On January 12, 2022, a Twitter account in the name of "New Youth" (新青年) twitted several screenshots showing possible censorship on #Baidu, the most used search engine in China.

The screenshots are lists of search results on Baidu, which is said to be automatically generated by AI based on most popular searches and most used keywords.

"New Youth" claimed that on Baidu's search bar, it used to prompt multiple AI suggested contents associated to "The incumbent" (現在這位) in its dropdown box, such like:-

"The incumbent is going to reign forever?" (現在這位是一直要坐下去嗎);

"The incumbent is not stirring up economy but movement" (現在這位不搞經濟搞運動);

"The incumbent craves for grandiose deeds" (現在這位好大喜功);

"The incumbent sucks in promoting economy" (現在這位搞經濟不行);

"The incumbent brags everyday, incredible!" (現在這位天天吹, 厲害了).

These suggested contents are seemingly pointing at the top CCP leader, Xi Jingping, criticising and mocking his leadership.

Currently, Baidu has removed all these suggested contents associated to "The Incumbent".

Cut emissions not productivity, says Xi Jinping

China's ambitious low-carbon goals should not come at the expense of energy and food security or the "normal life" of ordinary people, President Xi Jinping is quoted by the Xinhua News Agency as saying, signalling a more cautious approach to climate change as the economy slows.As the world's biggest source of climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions, China has been under pressure to "enhance ambition" and take more drastic action to tackle global warming.But Xi told senior Communist Party leaders in a recent speech that the country needed to "overcome the notion of rapid success" and proceed gradually, according to Xinhua."Reducing emissions is not about reducing productivity, and it is not about not emitting at all," Xi said."We must stick to the overall planning and ensure energy security, industrial supply chain security and food security at the same time as cutting carbon emissions." Since a national economic work meeting held at the end of last year, central policymakers have repeatedly stressed that the country would "prioritise stability" in 2022.The approach has already started to feed into policy making, with Zhang Bo, Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, telling reporters earlier this week that the country would not impose strict water quality targets on local governments, and would instead encourage them to "consolidate" previous gains.With energy supplies still a major concern after a wave of shortages hit manufacturers last year, Xi also told Party leaders that "the gradual withdrawal of traditional energy must be based on the safe and reliable replacement by new energy."Beijing has promised to accelerate the nation's shift to renewables, but will only start to reduce coal consumption - a major source of CO2 - after 2025.China's state planning agency also said in December that it will loosen blanket restrictions on energy consumption in order to ensure environmental targets do not erode growth. The T-shirt ban has been reversed after fierce criticism from human rights groups, the international tennis community, and one of the tennis all-time greats, Navratilova, who criticized the decision as "pathetic".

However, this shows again (and again) how sports event organisers bow to pressure from major Chinese corporate sponsors.

Just glad that Tennis Australia listened this time around.

The Quickfox VPN is mainly used by Chinese citizens living abroad who need to access Chinese websites as most of these sites are geo-restricted.

Wizcase’s team of ethical researchers, led by Ata Hakcil, discovered a “critical leak” that the researchers found to be exposing personally identifiable information of at least one million users of a Chinese VPN service.

The team revealed that the VPN leaking data is Quickfox, produced by Fuzhou Zixun Network Technology Co., Ltd.

China Claims World’s Biggest Military Robot (reports)

Chinese state media has released footage of a giant robotic yak, alleging it is the “world’s largest quadruped bionic robot”, designed to carry military equipment up to 160kg at just over 6mph.

The Global Times reports that the mechanical beast can operate in all conditions, and is intended to assist troops in remote areas - but suggests it could become weaponised in the future.
