Angry Chinese Netizens Lash Out at #KPop Group #Blackpink for Touching Panda with Bare Hands

Chinese netizens lashed out at K-pop idol group Blackpink and their fans, after the members of the group were shown touching a baby panda with bare hands in the reality show "24/365 with BLACKPINK”.

Chinese netizens claimed that Pandas are China’s national treasure, and reprimanded Blackpink members for their "poor personal hygiene" as they were not wearing gloves.

Editor's note: This is not the first time when celebrities outside China fell prey to Chinese netizens' attack. In October 2020, world-famous K-pop band #BTS was harshly condemned by Chinese people for mentioning the Korean War, as the band commemorated the sacrifice of Korean and US soldiers. Pompeo: US to Have Economic Dialogue with Taiwan, Supply Chain and 5G Security on Agenda

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that his deputy Keith Krach, who had visited Taiwan in September, was hosting an economic conversation with Taiwan on Friday, 20 November. Items on the agenda included supply chain and 5G network security. Pompeo said the dialogue, which marks the “strong and growing” economic relationship between Taiwan and the US, will help enhance their corporation in such aspects as health and safety, supply chain security and clean 5G networks. He added that Taiwan is a “vibrant democracy” and “reliable partner”.

According to Pompeo, the dialogue would be hosted by the American Institute in Taiwan and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States.

As the pandemic continues, Taiwan representatives in Washington said the conversation would have both face-to-face and online components. Physical meetings would be held in Washington and joined by a delegation led by Chen Chern-Chyi, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs. The other officials involved would join the conversation by means of video calls. The dialogue was expected to last for one day.

For the First Time, Canada Acknowledges China’s Operation Fox Hunt Causes Threat, Urges Nationals to Report Cases

Following the US, the Canadian government has also acknowledged that China’s Operation Fox Hunt had been causing threats, pointing out that China targeted at individuals in the Chinese-Canadian Community through plainclothes national security personnel or “trusted agents”. The Canadian authority criticised this action as threatening to national security and Canada’s sovereignty and the safety of its people, and urged victims to report their cases.

In response to The Globe and Mail’s inquiry on China’s Operation Fox Hunt, John Townsend, the spokesperson of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, said that some countries, including China, routinely sent plainclothes national security personnel or “trusted agents” to other countries to make threats, silence dissidents or suppress political opponents, instilling fear in other countries. He said, “These activities constitute a threat to Canada’s sovereignty and to the safety of Canadians.”

Townsend refused to reveal the number of Canadians targeted by Operation Fox Hunt, but urged Chinese Canadians and local Chinese nationals to report any cases of threats or intimidations by China, “These individuals, for various reasons, may not have the means to protect themselves or do not know they can report these activities to Canadian authorities. The fear of state-backed or state-linked retribution targeting both them and their loved ones, in Canada and abroad, can force individuals to submit to foreign interference.”

The US, Japan and Other Allies of Taiwan Give Speech at WHA in Support of Taiwan

The World Health Assembly (WHA) has held its online conference earlier this week. The US previously urged the WHA to invite Taiwan to participate as an observer, but the appeal was rejected by the World Health Organization (WHO). Nonetheless, the US, Japan, and a number of countries with diplomatic ties with Taiwan spoke up for Taiwan during their speeches at the conference. The Central News Agency (from Taiwan) reported that during the speeches that supported Taiwan, the assembly stopped the live broadcasting twice, citing the reason that they were irrelevant to the agenda.

During the conference, Garrett Grigsby, Director of the Office of Global Affairs in the US Department of Health and Human Services, expressed that Taiwan has made impressive achievements in combatting the COVID pandemic. He said that it would be beneficial to the response to the pandemic if WHO members could understand and take reference from Taiwan’s experience. Instead, WHO’s blocking of Taiwan from participating in the conference as an observer was counterproductive. Grigsby emphasised that while each country worked to strengthen its capacity under the pandemic, countries should also share information about the pandemic and develop a transparent global architecture to detect threats early and prevent the further spreading of the virus.
