China’s new green target still means pumping too much pollution

In China’s 14th five-year plan, the target of greenhouse gas emissions announced were disappointing. Beijing has not set a specific target for emissions, nor has it brought forward from 2030 when it expects them to peak. The only carbon target announced, reducing emissions per unit of gross domestic product by 18% over five years, was the same as in 2016.

The reality is that the world needs to reduce emissions as quickly as possible and China currently accounts for 30% of global production. It’s the only major economy that saw an increase last year after the pandemic hammered economic growth elsewhere, according to research firm Rhodium Group.

Climate scientists fear that China’s modest targets may not slow rising emissions quickly enough.

“China will not be back on the path of decarbonization until Beijing controls the coal construction boom and allows its Covid takeover,” Greenpeace’s Li said.

the Ebb and Flow of Plastic.

The world’s largest polluter is (unsurprisingly) China. The plastic waste from China is far higher than that of the United States in second place. China’s rate is 60 million tonnes per year, while America’s tally is 38 million tonnes.

China has no environmental or animal welfare protections and so it will continue to pollute unless the rest of the world puts economic pressure on it to stop. The much-needed global will to ‘stand up’ to China is unlikely to emerge short of political revolution (something I believe will take place in the next two decades).

6 Chinese-funded Companies Involved in Illegal Mining in the Republic of Congo, Beijing ordered to Evacuate

The government of Sud-Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa ordered 9 mining companies to suspend operations earlier, involving 6 Chinese-funded companies. The reason is that those companies have illegally mined and caused environmental pollution. The violated Chinese companies ignored the issues and continued their operations, causing the local citizens to protest in mining areas last month. The police, therefore, used tear gases for dispersing. Beijing government requested the relevant companies to stop operating and leave the place.

Wu Peng, Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, indicated that they have already finished the investigation on the incident. He ordered those companies to respect the local government - stop the operation and leave Sud-Kivu as soon as possible. Wu has also stated that those companies will be punished. “We would not allow Chinese companies to violate local laws.” “We support the Democratic Republic of Congo to buffet illegal economic activities”. South China Morning Post described it is very rare for Beijing to stop overseas companies’ operations. At the same time, the local government requested a review of China’s large-scale local project contracts.

Experts are asking whether China is measuring #pollution or preparing for war, following its use of green #laserbeams over Hawaii. While the satellite is for monitoring pollution, questions arise: why measure pollution so far away? And what other kind of information can they get? Experts point to American military bases in Hawaii, as well as the fleet of submarines in the sea.
