Trudeau Say Canada Will Not Surrender To China's Coercive Diplomacy

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada would not cave in to pressure from China and blow to its "Coercive Diplomacy" over the case of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei, who was was on a U.S. warrent and arrested while in transit through Canada two years ago.

“We don’t believe in coercive diplomacy and ... we actually deeply believe that if you start giving into that kind of pressure, you’ll leave yourself worse off for the long term.”, Trudeau said in an interview with Financial Time. “China continues to think that they can just put enough pressure on us and we will ... give in, but that’s exactly the opposite of our position,” he added.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin denied that China was engaging in "Coercive Diplomacy" and said that Canadian and American authorities had allegedly abused the judicial process to illegally interrogate Meng Wanzhou and refused to disclose key evidence to the public, revealing the political nature of the case.

U.S. in talks with Huawei CFO Meng on resolving criminal charges

U.S. prosecutors are discussing a deal with Huawei finance chief Meng Wanzho to resolve criminal charges against her and signaling a potential end to a case that has strained ties between the Unit states, China and Canada. Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018 on bank fraud charges for allegedly “misleading HSBC Holdings Plc about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s business dealings in Iran, which was subject to U.S. sanctions.”

According to the Reuters report, “Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing that Meng was innocent, and that the U.S. had ‘choreographed’ the case to contain Chinese high-tech companies.” However, Huawei’s business dealings have been consistently sanctioned by the Trump administration and banned by other governments who believe its 5G network equipment could be used for spying purposes.

The results of her court hearing could possibly resolve part of the US-Canada-China dispute, during which after Meng’s arrest, China stopped importing Canadian canola seeds and detained two Canadian citizens.

#Huawei #MengWanZhou Caught Wearing 'Made in Taiwan' Mask

//Meng Wanzhou, who is the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, appeared in a Canadian court on Dec 21, 2020.

Most notable to Taiwanese observers was the fact that she was wearing a purple surgical face mask with the words "Made in Taiwan" in plain sight on the lower righthand corner of the face covering.

The fact that she was wearing a mask manufactured in Taiwan was extraordinary given that Meng is at the eye of the storm for an intense geopolitical rivalry between China and the U.S. and its ally — Taiwan. Meng's company, which is a national champion for China and has numerous ties to the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) and People's Liberation Army (#PLA), has become a major target of sanctions and litigation by the Trump administration amid the trade war between the U.S. and China.//

What more can we say. #CCP is a regime of thugs and really not much better than #NorthKorea. Why would anyone still want to cozy up to them?

We touched on this briefly yesterday, after the sentencing of #MichaelSpavor to 11 years imprisonment as a hostage for #Huawei’s CFO #MengWanzhou. At this point, some think #CCP is not beyond more desperate moves.

Also, we’ve been saying for more than a year now: as a #humanrights abuser who unleashed #UyghurGenocide, #China does not deserve to be the host of the #Olympics.

Opinion: Canada needs a new engagement strategy that opposes China’s thuggery

//The 11-year prison sentence handed to Michael Spavor is just the latest example of the ruthlessness of China’s efforts to put pressure on the Canadian government, and in turn on the U.S. administration, to return Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. As The Washington Post’s editorial board wrote on Aug. 13: “China’s kangaroo courts operate in service to the country’s Communist Party and its leader, Xi Jinping, whose contempt for international standards of law and justice is manifest.” As Times Wang outlined in The Globe last week, Canadians should refuse to recognize China’s “justice” system.//

“She basically bought her way out of the U.S. criminal justice system, even though she admitted to committing all the egregious conduct in the indictment,” says Kash Patel.

#Huawei chief financial officer #MengWanzhou was recently given a deferred prosecution agreement and allowed to return to #China. And almost immediately after, the “#TwoMichaels” imprisoned in China—Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor—were released on bail for “medical reasons.”

And lesser known are two American siblings—blocked from leaving China since 2018—who were also recently allowed to return to the United States.

In this episode of Kash’s Corner, we discuss what many are describing as “hostage diplomacy."

What exactly was Huawei doing in Iran in the first place, and how is Huawei part of the Chinese Communist Party’s broader ambitions to control key infrastructure nodes around the globe?

China played dirty to get Huawei’s 'princess' back — too dirty even to tell its own people

Family and supporters of two diplomatic hostages held in China for almost three years have celebrated their arrival home in Canada, as the woman they were traded for, Meng Wanzhou, was given a hero's welcome in the city of Shenzhen.

The trio's return to their respective homes caps a historic three-year standoff between the world's two superpowers, with Canada and the Chinese company Huawei caught in the middle.

Upon arriving home to Calgary, one of the two Canadians Michael Kovrig said "It’s fantastic to be back home in Canada".
