China Planning 'Unprecedented' Tiananmen Memorial Crackdown: Report

Beijing will take "unprecedented heavy-handed measures" to crack down on next month's vigil in Hong Kong to mark the Tiananmen Square massacre, a Beijing-friendly local outlet said Tuesday.

The annual gathering in Victoria Park—banned on health grounds for a second year running—is a "minefield" for those planning to attend on June 4, according to online news portal HK01. It will be the first memorial since China's sweeping Hong Kong national security law came into effect on June 30 last year.

[...] sterilization and abortion in #Xinjiang. It's even trying to export the "#Chinese model". So no, democratization does not follow economic prosperity in this case. The question is, will the rest of the world stop harbouring this illusion now or wait until we are infiltrated and ruled by a tyrant?

TLDR: Because of #TiananmenMassacre, #HongKong has never fully trusted #CCP, fearing that the promise of #democracy will never be realized and our way of life and #freedom will be crushed in the most brutal way. The violent crackdown of 2019's democratic movement and the arbitrary imposition of #nationalsecuritylaw are pretty much our worst nightmare come true.

While an older generation of #HongKongers commemorated #Tiananmen because they felt that those in #Beijing were kin, a young generation of #HKers, many born after 1989, have different reasons to remember the massacre. Instead of feeling bonded by blood to the #Chinese protesters, many "pass down the torch" of June 4th because they believe that history must be preserved, and they recognized that protesters on Tiananmen Square were fighting against the same oppressor, for the same goals - democracy.

To nobody's surprise, #HK's dim-witted puppet government is banning this year's vigil. If the #Chinese government means business about getting [...]

#SocialMedia account of #China's #Xiaohongshu goes dark after #Tiananmen anniversary post

//A social media account for popular Chinese e-commerce site Xiaohongshu, or "Little Red Book," was unavailable on Sunday, after it issued a post on Friday, the anniversary of the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy activists in #TiananmenSquare, a highly sensitive date in China.

The Friday post on its account on China's #Weibo said, "Tell me loud: what's the date today?", according to a screenshot seen by Reuters.

That post was quickly deleted by Xiaohongshu, according to a person familiar with the matter, who declined to be named given its sensitivity.

The company, backed by Chinese internet giants Alibaba (9988.HK) and Tencent (0700.HK), did not immediately reply to a request for comment...//

Film director prepares to mark Tiananmen Square anniversary in B.C. after fleeing Hong Kong home

Award-winning Hong Kong filmmaker Jevons Au left his home for Canada last summer in fear of the national security law China imposed on the region in July 2020.

On Friday evening at 8 p.m. PT, Au will join dozens of other people from B.C.'s Lower Mainland at the Chinese consulate in Vancouver to commemorate those who lost their lives in the military crackdown against democracy protesters in Beijing's Tianammen Square — a vigil, he says, he's been keeping since he was in Grade 2 when he first learned of the tragedy.
"We have to remember those who fight for the freedom or democracy for the Chinese people, and their sacrifice," said Au, who now lives in Surrey, B.C., near Vancouver.

Literal #MinistryofTruth here. The reason why #CCP is so dead set on distorting the history of #TiananmenSquare? Because it is its greatest sore spot. The entire world witnessed a massacre, but the tyrant is simply incapable of admitting that it has done something horrible and wrong.

Amid sensitive days, Hong Kongers climb Lion Rock in the mist, symbolizing resilience. "Mr. Leung" says, "Numbers record history." Numbers help us recall significant events, like 9/11. For Hong Kong, we'll never forget 8964. Commemorating Tiananmen, it preserves memories and values of freedom and democracy. It reminds us that past memories and future hopes drive social progress. #8964 #Tiananmen #LionRock #RememberingHistory #Freedom #Democracy
