China Evergrande boss raises HK$2.6b with stake sale

The founder and chairman of troubled mainland developer, China Evergrande, has sold a stake in the firm for HK$2.67 billion.A stock exchange filing showed Hui Ka-yan sold 1.2 billion China Evergrande shares on Thursday at an average price of HK$2.23.His stake in the company dropped from 76.96 percent to 67.87 percent.Shares in China Evergrande closed more than 10 percent lower on Friday at HK$2.5.

US lawmakers touch down in Taiwan — second time in a month

Five members of the House arrived in Taiwan Thursday where the trip will focus on security matters amid rising tensions in the South China Sea. (Reuters)

Mark Takano, Colin Allred, Elissa Slotkin, Sara Jacobs and Nancy Mace are the members who are visiting and are expecting to fly out Friday.

The US officially has no ties with Taiwan officially (like many countries), but it the island’s most important arms supplier and international backer, angering Beijing.

Eastern Europe may become microchip powerhouse

Taiwan is considering cooperation with three Eastern European states on semiconductors amid the global chip supply shortage, a Taiwanese minister revealed Thursday.

“The whole semiconductor supply chain is enormous. Many countries can play different roles,” Taiwan’s National Development Council head, Kung Ming-hsin, told reporters following last month’s visits to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania. 

He said all three countries expressed readiness to jointly work on semiconductor chips with Taiwan, which holds a 63% share of the global semiconductor market.

Major Chinese property developer asking for $400 MILLION debt swap amid bond crisis

Kaisa Group warned it risked defaulting on its international debts unless creditors agreed to a $400 million bond swap (WSJ)

The Shenzhen-based company in 2015 became one of the first Chinese developers to default on debt accrued abroad.

The company said if couldn’t conclude the exchange, it may not be able to repay the bonds at maturity on December 7.
