Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo slumps after massive revenue miss

The Shanghai-based e-commerce platform plunged around 18% Friday after missing its quarterly revenue expectations. (Reuters)

Pinduoduo already fell 54% this year after Chinese authorities began clamping down on tech companies to allegedly fight back against monopolistic practices and protect users’ data.

Just for perspective, Pinduoduo reportedly has 900 million users, according to Reuters and Amazon has approx. 300 million, TechJury said.

"Revolution of Our Times" has won the Best Documentary at the 58th Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards in Taiwan.

Delivering his acceptance speech by video, director #KiwiChow thanked every person who was filmed and interviewed in this documentary.

One of them, Chow said, was a 16-year-old secondary school student. He was one of the Valiants and was trapped in the Polytechnic University along with Chow for several days during the #PolyU Siege. When he returned to class later. his identity was already made known, and he was trembling in fear when he stepped into his own classroom again. To his surprise, his classmates and teacher all hugged him. The whole room was in tears.

"I really wanted to include this scene in the film, but I couldn't. Still, I want Revolution of Our Times to be like this embrace. During the production, I cried many times. I felt like I relied on this film to comfort myself, to let out my anger and hate, to face my fears and trauma."

In closing, Chow remarked, "To those who remain in Hong Kong, including myself, those who are exiled overseas, and those in prison: My friends, although you may not have a chance to watch the film, I pray to my Heavenly Father that the mere existence of this film could be a comfort and an embrace. Thank you."

Macau mogul questioned over alleged gambling crime

Macau police have taken away businessman Alvin Chau for investigation, after a mainland court issued an arrest warrant for him over suspected cross-border illegal gambling activities. The Macau government said in a statement that officers had taken Chau and other suspects to a police station on Saturday morning, based on evidence of previous criminal investgation. It said it received notification from their mainland counterparts, accusing Chau of organising mainland citizens to gamble at a "cross-border gambling crime syndicate".Chau is the founder and CEO of Suncity Group, which operates integrated resorts across Asia.On Friday, a court in Wenzhou city, in Zhejiang province, issued the warrant, accusing Chau of leading a group to set up illegal casinos on the mainland that "seriously damaged social order".The authorities alleged that as of July last year, the group had 199 shareholder representatives, more than 12,000 gambling agents and over 80,000 members in its network.

Swedish Website Publishes #PoliticalCartoon, Mocking the "Unsportsmanlike behaviour by Beijing"

A satirical cartoon drawn by artist Niklas "Kludd-Niklas" Eriksson was published on a Swedish website Kinamedia.

The cartoon goes with the title "Unsportsmanlike behaviour by Beijing," referring to how the Chinese Community Party (#CCP) deployed different means to silence the country's own top tennis athlete #PangShuai.

As one of the most well-known female tennis player from China, Pang in early November 2021 disclosed on social media that CCP's former Vice Premier #ZhangGaoli had coerced her into sex at his home, in the presence of his wife. The social media post was soon removed and Pang has not been seen in public since then.

China strengthens lending for private enterprises

China has increased lending support for the private sector, with new loans to private enterprises reaching five trillion yuan (US$782 billion) in the first 10 months of 2021, according to a Xinhua report citing the nation’s top banking and insurance regulator.The amount accounted for 53.5 percent of the total new corporate loans for the period, 1.8 percentage points higher than the level at the beginning of this year, data from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) showed.Outstanding loans to private enterprises by banking financial institutions stood at 53.1 trillion yuan as of September this year, 15 trillion yuan more than the amount at the end of 2018.In the same period, the number of private firms with outstanding loans increased from 25.84 million to 77.62 million.Financing costs for private enterprises have been on the decline. In the first three quarters of this year, the annual interest rate for new loans to private firms was 5.3 percent, 1.6 percentage points lower than the 2018 level.The CBIRC will further push to implement measures boosting financial services for private enterprises and urge banking and insurance institutions to continue improving their services, a commission spokesperson said.

Taiwan says China wants to 'emulate' the Taliban

Taiwan's foreign minister accused China on Saturday of wanting to "emulate" the Taliban, saying the island that Beijing claims as sovereign Chinese territory did not wish to be subject to communism or crimes against humanity.

The rapid fall of the U.S.-backed Afghan government has sparked heated debate in Taiwan about whether they could suffer the same fate to a Chinese invasion, while state media in China has said Kabul's fate showed Taiwan it cannot trust Washington.
