EU’s Flaccid Sanctions Still Anger Beijing. German Press: Xi Jinping Will Not Tolerate Any Criticism
Following Beijing’s move to forcibly impose the national security law on Hong Kong, the European Union (EU) launched sanctioning policies one month later to express its disapproval. A European newspaper opinion piece states that the EU’s sanctions paled in comparison to those of the US and the UK, nevertheless, Beijing still expressed unquenchable fury. The opinion piece says that this indicated “Xi Jinping’s world will no longer suffer any kind of criticism”, and calls on European countries to avoid being overly dependent on China, subjecting to its restrictions.
The *Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung* published an opinion piece titled “China’s Unreasonable Fury”, pointing out that even though the sanctions launched by the EU were flaccid, they were nonetheless symbolic. “By implementing the Hong Kong national security law, China has infringed on the Sino-British agreement. Just this one point is sufficient to illustrate that China’s claim that Hong Kong affairs are 'internal affairs' does not stand. When it comes to breaches on international agreements, the EU has every right to respond.”
The opinion piece also states that it is believable that even the Chinese government did not find the EU’s sanctions a huge blow, “But to Beijing, whether the sanctions were harsh was by itself unimportant. No matter how gentle the terms, Xi Jinping’s world will no longer suffer any kind of criticism.” The article also says that even as the EU’s sanctions seemed weak and flaccid, it was better than none, because under the current circumstance, it was also very important to put up a symbolic stance to indicate to China that Europeans did not approve of China’s ways.

China’s Diplomatic Offensive Sees Major Setback as Discontent Grows in Europe, Says New York Times
With Sino-US relations having remained tense in recent years, Beijing has arranged for its foreign minister Wang Yi to visit Europe in August in what was said to be an attempt to show goodwill to Europe and strike a new balance in international relations. But a New York Times commentary said more and more European countries are voicing dissatisfaction at China’s trade tactics, policies towards Hong Kong and Taiwan, human rights record, and other issues. The growing discontent, it said, has seriously undermined China’s diplomatic offensive in Europe.
Steven Lee Myers, head of The New York Times’ Beijing bureau, pointed out that while China believes Europe, given its pragmatism, could play a stabilizing role as Sino-US relations deteriorate, Europe’s changing perception of China poses a major challenge for the Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Myers wrote, “In the short term, it threatens to undermine the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery by stifling new investments as the United States restricts them, especially in high tech. In the longer term, it could blunt his ambitions for China to offer an alternative to the United States as the global leader dictating the rules for governance and trade.”
Myers sees China’s authoritarian system as representing very different political values from those of Europe, noting that the same goes for the new National Security Law in Hong Kong, which “has been used to crack down on dissent in the semiautonomous territory.” Janka Oertel, director of the Asian programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said similarly that “[i]t makes it really hard for [China] to convey a message of cooperation and peacefulness and harmonious society, if at the same time you see schoolgirls being beaten up by the Hong Kong police.”
Europe’s dissatisfaction at China’s policies has become even more pronounced amid the Wuhan virus pandemic. China’s attempt to conceal its mishandling of the outbreak in the beginning and its subsequent ‘mask diplomacy’, which exposed the poor quality of its protective gear and medical supplies, have had a knock-on effect on attitudes towards China, especially in the Netherlands and Spain. According to the results of last week’s ECFR poll, only 7% of Europeans see China as a useful partner in the fight against the pandemic with 62% of the respondents viewing China negatively.

#Taiwan Will Not Participate in Gay Games hosted by Hong Kong due to the #NationalSecurityLaw
Hong Kong successfully applied for hosting the Gay Games in 2022. It is the first time for the game to be held in Asia.
However, the Taiwan Gay Sports and Movement Association (#TGSMA) issued a statement, pointing out that due to possible China's intervention, the TGSMA would not participate in the Gay Games unless Hong Kong authorities can ensure the safety of the athletes.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted Yang Chih-Chun, president of the TGSMA, that after the Hong Kong National Security Law implementation, the authority could use any reason to arrest people, which TGSMA could not ensure the athletes' safety.
Yang Chih-Chun also showed his concerns to AFP that the Taiwanese athletes and staff would be arrested because of waving the Taiwanese flag or competing under the name of "Taiwan".

Crackdown on Stand News is China's First Step in Controlling the World's Narrative, says Former #NextDigital Director
The day after Stand News was forced to shut down by Hong Kong Police, Hong Kong Democracy Council (#HKDC) held a rapid response virtual briefing on December 30, 2021, in which the speakers urged the international community to closely monitor the developing situation.
Not only is freedom of press under attack in Hong Kong, they said, the incident also signifies important future challenges, such as the possibility of China manipulating the world in the future.
The invited speakers were #ThomasKellogg, executive director of the Center for Asian Law at Georgetown University; and #MarkClifford, former independent non-executive director of Next Digital.
As a former director of Next Media, Clifford saw firsthand the government's oppression against Apple Daily, which began even before the National Security Law (#NSL) took effect on June 30, 2020. The crackdown against Stand News had been rumored to be coming for some time; even so, when it finally became reality, Clifford felt it deeply.
"What's happening at Stand News is tragic," Clifford said, "Perhaps not a complete surprise, because we have seen what happened at Apple Daily. It's extraordinary when you're on the other end of state power - unchecked state power. In a city like Hong Kong, it's hard to believe."
The arrests and forced closure of Stand News happened soon after the conclusion of the legislative elections. Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang had twice written to the Wall Street Journal to criticize their reporting of the Hong Kong Elections, even calling its editorials "sickening".
Clifford said that this had not been a coincidence; rather, it reflects the Chinese Communist Party's ambitions to control the world's narrative.

As Koo stepped into the defendant’s dock, he tried to wave and thank his supporters in the courtroom, but was immediately stopped by court security.
Later on when the magistrate asked Koo whether he understood the charges against him, Koo shouted, “Human rights rank above the right of states, and the people are more important than the state. I am not guilty.”
He was soon interrupted by the judge and ordered to cease shouting.
Without a legal representative, Koo applied for bail on his own, and was denied. He was not required to enter a plea as the Judge adjourned the case to April 1, 2022. Koo would be remanded in custody until then.

Pro-democracy artists and activists arranged shipment of banned books in Hong Kong to US
Following the imposition of the National Security Law (#NSL) in Hong Kong in 2020, the local government launched a series of attempts to erase citizens' memories of the June 4th massacre in Beijing in 1989.
Yet, in mid-February this year, around 100 boxes of books and collaterals concerning the June 4th massacre, weighed over 8,000 pounds, had been successfully shipped out of Hong Kong to the Liberty Sculpture Park in California, USA.
The collection of books and historical archives will be kept at the "Victims of Communism Memorial" of Liberty Sculpture Park for public viewing in the future.
Chen Wai-ming, a representative of the Park, told reporters that these precious contemporary literatures and biographies, covering the truth of the June 4th massacre and crimes of the Communist Party, have been banned in Hong Kong.
Possessing these materials could bring troubles and even criminal risks to their owners.

#Hongkongers, #Tibetans and #EastTurkestans Join Assembly Outside of ChineseEmbassy in #London
On June 4, 2022, more than 200 people gather outside the Chinese Embassy in London for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the victims of the #TiananmenMassacre back in 1989.
#IsaacCheng Ka-Long, the former Vice-Chairperson of #Demosisto, and #YauManChun, a former Shatin District Councillor, were the moderated the event. Speakers representing the #UK, #HongKong, #Tibet and #EastTurkestan took turn to speak. The pre-recorded speech of #ZhangXianLing, one of the "#TiananmenMothers", were played after a minute of silence was observed.
Zhang Xianling's son was massacred at Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4 1989. Her son was 19 years old when killed. Zhang sent blessing to Hongkongers. Despite the suppression of demonstration and commemorative events in Hong Kong, Zhang encouraged the people of Hong Kong not to give up.
#BenedictRoger, the founder of #HongKongWatch, brought a yellow umbrella to the event, saying the umbrella were only used in rainy weather but it also symbolised the sovereignty and the power of the people who suffer suppression. He hopes people would see the UK as a shelter.
#LeeWingTat, a former legislator from Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp, also gave a speech, urging people not to give up. Under the National Security Law (#NSL) and other regulations, he foresaw the arrival of more and more Hong Kong immigrants to the UK. He encouraged those who arrived early to help others to settle and hoped to spread the situation in Hong Kong to the world.
#TserinPassang, a British-born Tibetan talked about how his parents went in exiled due to the high-pressure suppression in Tibel such as re-education camps and forced labour. He said that over hundred Tibetans conducted self-immolation to express their discontent, but the suppression by Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) regime does not cease. He expressed his will to go to his homeland hopefully in a not so distant future.
After that, a representative from East Turkestan spoke on the genocid and the need to raise people's awareness on all humanitarian crises.
Although it is no longer possible to continue the tradition of holding an annual candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's #VictoriaPark, the commemorarive event is carried out overseas and is joined by not just Hongkongers.
The assembly in London ended with three songs: "The Flower of Freedom" (自由花), "The Internationale", and "Glory to Hong Kong". The participants chanted pro-democracy slogans to voice their demands outside the Chinese Embassy.

In 2022, the sovereignty over Hong Kong has been transferred from Britain to the PRC for 25 years but with no plans for universal suffrage. The currrent electoral system is a "huge fallback of democracy".
With the enactment of Hong Kong National Security Law (#NSL) since 2020, the #CentralGovernment largely changed Hong Kong's electoral system, as the city's #LegislativeCouncil (#LegCo) no longer has an opposite voice.
With the enormous change in the political system and the environment in Hong Kong, what hapened to the promise of "High Degree of Autonomy" and "Hong Kong ruled by Hong Kong people"?
"When I was in Hong Kong, I saved my diary for the first time in my life. I hope it can be the evidence of Hong Kong being a British colony with a democratic society." said former and the last Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten.
Hong Kong once experienced a higher level of democracy and more freedom. However, the circumstances have changed a lot in the last 25 years. The promise of a "real universal suffrage" has never been fulfilled. Worse still, the electoral system had been changed.

UK-Based HongKonger's Groups Criticised pro-Beijing Organisations Cleansing the National Security Law with Human-sea Tactics
The 73rd Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Conference will be held within 2 weeks. UK-based HongKongers organisations found that many pro-Beijing organisations submit reports to this conference, strongly promoting the National Security Law (#NSL). They intended to rationalise the fact of Beijing’s corrosion to the rights in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Scots, a UK-based HongKongers’ organisation, indicated that Beijing utilised Human-sea tactic after being criticised in the United Nations Commission on Human Rights last year to promote the suppression of Hong Kong people in the United Nations. As the submitted content from various groups of people is similar, it is suspected to interfere with the trial of Hong Kong Human Rights in the United Nations, demonstrating “head count takes over the truth with limited evidence”.
