World Politicians, Human Rights Groups Reportedly Ask Olympic Committee to Remove Beijing as 2022 Winter Olympics Host

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)―a group of parliamentarians from the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and Europe―had formally asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reconsider whether China should get to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. China’s foreign ministry has yet to respond.

Sir Iain Duncan Smith, member of the British parliament and co-chairman of the IPAC, said, “The free world does have a strong position to say the bullying, the threatening, the internal repression, the border disputes, the arrogant attitude to your neighbours, the breaking of the treaty with Hong Kong―these must have consequences. At the moment the Chinese believe these consequences are no more than just condemnation.”

Earlier, 160 human rights groups wrote to the IOC asking it to remove China as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics in response to its suppression of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, the imprisonment of the Uighur people in Xinjiang, and its other human rights issues.

Citizens Increase Calls for Canada to Stand Up to China

Canadian citizens want continued, harsher treatment towards China.

In response to the appointment of Catroina Le May Doan as head of the Canadian 2022 Olympic delegation, an Ottawa citizen calls for Canada to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics entirely.

“How can we possibly be thinking of sending Canadians under our flag to a country that is holding two of our citizens hostage; that has threatened Canadians in Hong Kong; and that continues to use trade as a weapon against us?”

Citing Canada’s precedence of boycotting the Moscow Games in 1980, he added that the repression of the Uyghurs and democracy in Hong Kong “should be enough for fair-minded countries to withdraw.”

His opinion towards the Chinese government regarding Chinese human rights abuses is echoed by another citizen, who applauds Bob Rae, the Canadian UN Ambassador, for mentioning the alleged genocide in the Xinjiang Province during a UN conference.

He adds that “Like-minded nations must stand up to the CCP and show our support for the Chinese people by supporting Taiwan and Hong Kong.”

Canadians support harder line against China over treatment of Uyghurs

A strong majority of Canadians both approve of Parliament’s declaration that China is carrying out genocide against its Uyghur Muslim minority and favour a harder line toward the country, including economic sanctions and moving the 2022 Winter Olympics out of Beijing.

A poll by Nanos Research showed that 83 per cent of Canadians either support or somewhat support the unanimous vote by the House of Commons, declaring Chinese atrocities against Uyghurs and Turkic minorities in Xinjiang to be in contravention of the United Nations’ Genocide Convention.

“It’s pretty clear that Canadians see this as genocide and the polls suggest that they are ready for action and a hardline when it comes to responding to the government of China” Mr. Nanos said.

Canada Diplomatically Boycotts Beijing Winter Olympics

#Canada announces that they will join the diplomatic boycott to #Beijing2022 #WinterOlympics, and will not have a delegation to attend.

Canadian President #JustinTrudeau indicated that many partner countries are extremely concerned about the continuous behaviour on #humanrights violation. "We have raised the concerns on China's human rights issues for years, and we have to reiterate our stand to #China."

The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada stated that #Trudeau had a false accusation on China's "human rights violation". China strongly dissatisfies Canada using this reason to diplomatically boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics and has been raised solemn negotiation to Canada.

The spokesperson says that the Canadian government tragically treats the Aboriginals and that the nationwide ethnic discrimination in Canada is severe. China continues that Canada does not qualify to teach or criticise China about human rights. They suggest that Canada should not politicise sports events and should stop interfering with the hosting of the Beijing Olympics, or else, Canada will bring disgrace to itself.

An NGO dedicated to ending forced #OrganHarvesting in China is calling for participating governments and sponsors to withdraw their support for the #Beijing2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC) said in a statement that China stands accused of grave human rights abuses against Tibetans, Falun Gong adherents, Uyghurs, Christians, democracy activists, and others.

“It is incomprehensible that Beijing qualified to hold the Winter Olympics. We call on the IOC to have more stringent conditions for nations to qualify as Olympic Games hosts, and to exclude States that engage in crimes against humanity or genocide."
