US: China Exploits George Floyd to Spread Chinese Communist Party's Propaganda

A statement entitled "On the Chinese Communist Party’s Obscene Propaganda" released by Michael R. Pompeo, SECRETARY OF STATE, USA on June 6, 2020:

"The Chinese Communist Party’s callous exploitation of the tragic death of George Floyd to justify its authoritarian denial of basic human dignity exposes its true colors yet again. As with dictatorships throughout history, no lie is too obscene, so long as it serves the Party’s lust for power. This laughable propaganda should not fool anyone.

...Beijing in recent days has showcased its continuing contempt for the truth and scorn for law. The CCP’s propaganda efforts – seeking to conflate the United States’ actions in the wake of the death of George Floyd with the CCP’s continued denial of basic human rights and freedom – should be seen for the fraud that they are."

Coronavirus: Inside the pro-China network targeting the US, Hong Kong and an exiled tycoon

//A BBC investigation has found that hundreds of fake or hijacked social media accounts have been pushing pro-Chinese government messages about the pandemic on Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube.

//The network, consisting of more than 1,200 accounts, displays features similar to a state-backed information operation originating in China that was removed from social media platforms last year. The BBC found evidence that at least some of the pages and accounts originally belonged to users from Bangladesh before they were hijacked or sold.

//These accounts have been attacking whoever’s critical of China’s handling of the outbreak while praising Beijing’s response. They seem to have a relatively low impact however with follower counts that were nowhere near levels that would be considered highly influential.

//A few among those accounts have a long history and have posted criticism of anti-Chinese government protests in Hong Kong last summer.

//Experts say the purpose of networks like this is to create the impression that a lot of social media users support a particular narrative or group, but the operation of this particular network seems too crude to convince most.

China Claims "Hundreds of Espionage Cases" from Taiwan; Broadcasts "Confession Video" from Taiwanese Man

On Oct 11, one day after Taiwan's national day, China's state media, CCTV, announced that China's national security bureau has recently arrested a large number of "spies" from Taiwan involved in hundreds of espionage cases.

30 minutes after the news was reported by the CCTV, Global Times, a newspaper owned by Chinese Communist Party government, published a detailed story of how a Taiwanese called Lee Meng-chu (李孟居) was suspected of "violating national security" by participating in Hong Kong's Anti-ELAB movement in August 2019.

According to this China's state owned media, Lee arrived in Hong Kong on August 18 and took some photos at the protest. Lee crossed the border to Shenzhen the next day. He was later arrested in Shenzhen when he was about to leave on Aug 20, 2019.

On Oct 31, 2019, Chinese authorities authorized the national security bureau to "officially arrested" Lee, but Lee has reportedly been detained by China since August.

Lee's confession was broadcasted on China's CCTV. In the video, Lee "confessed" that he was "swayed" by pro-Taiwan independence sentiments. He also said that he "regretted" joining the activities that "went against China and brought chaos to Hong Kong". He said in front of the camera that "Taiwan independence" and "Hong Kong independence" are "dead-ends".

According to the Guangdong branch of China's national security bureau, there were many more cases related to the involvement of Hong Kong affairs. The Chinese authorities warned that any infringement of Hong Kong's national security law may result in sentences lasting from 3 years in jail, all the way to a life sentence.

After the news came out on China's state media, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (#MAC) condemned China for causing harm to the cross-strait relationship and affecting the normal daily life of Taiwanese.

China Peddles Falsehoods to Obscure Origin of Covid Pandemic

The Chinese government started a propaganda campaign by misrepresenting experts’ remarks and given dubious theories the veneer of science.

Alexander Kekulé, the director of the Institute for Biosecurity Research in Halle, Germany, has been all over the state-run media in China. News outlets have taken Dr. Kekulé’s research out of context to suggest that Italy, not China, is where the coronavirus pandemic began. Photos of him have appeared on Chinese news sites under headlines reading, “China is innocent!”

Dr. Kekulé, who has repeatedly said that he believes the virus first emerged in China, was startled and said, “this is pure propaganda.”

These reaction reflect anxiety within the ruling Communist Party about the continuing damage to China’s international reputation brought by the pandemic.

China, has greatly expanded its influence in the W.H.O. in recent years, has tightly controlled the effort by designating Chinese scientists to lead key parts of the investigation.

Twitter Bans Trump but Condones China's Propaganda, Netizens Say

Twitter announced on Friday (January 8) that it has permanently blocked Donald Trump's personal account (@realDonaldTrump) with the concerns of the risks of further incitement to violence. The practice has aroused heated debate among netizens, many of whom say that banning speech is a common tactic used by the Chinese Communist Party, criticizing Silicon Valley for turning into the Chinese Communist Party. Twitter has not seen any major action even when Chinese official media and Foreign Ministry spokesperson use the platform to make propaganda or even send out fake news.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying posted a short video about COVID-19 on her Twitter account (@SpokespersonCHN) on Friday (January 8), saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words. Fighting #COVID19, a memory that will not be forgotten.” The video was viewed more than 7,000 times in just two hours, with more than 300 people giving Like and more than 50 comments. Most of the comments praised China for its greatness, happiness for its people and rejuvenation for its nation. Some even thanked China for "leading the world" in the fight against the virus. But Twitter does not put on the fact-check tag in the feed.

Another Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, became notorious last May when his Twitter account (@zlj517) cited a report from the official media Global Times that the U.S. military brought the COVID-19 into China. Twitter added a fact-check tag to it without deleting the post or the Global Times report. In last December, Zhao further antagonized China-Australia relation by uploading a fake picture of an Australian soldier. But his Twitter account is still up and running.

#UN rights chief falls under wheels of China's propaganda machine

Beijing's propaganda machine has outwitted the UN human rights chief on her visit to China, campaigners say, leaving the envoy accused of playing a role in whitewashing abuses against minorities in Xinjiang.

"She must have the political courage and integrity to speak out when her words and her visit are being distorted," said Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute. "If she is not prepared and able to do so, she should not visit."

Michelle Bachelet's long-planned trip in late May has taken her to the far-western region where Beijing is accused of imprisoning over one million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities, forcibly sterlising women and running labour camps that fuel global supply chains.

The United States and multiple western lawmakers have labelled the actions a "genocide", allegations vehemently denied by China which says it has only conducted necessary security operations to squash extremism and beef up development.

Bachelet has come under fire from rights groups and Uyghurs overseas, who say she has been suckered into a slickly choreographed Communist Party tour including a conversation with President Xi Jinping later portrayed in state media as a mutual endorsement of China's high ideals on rights.

It is "as clear as day" that China has so far used the visit "to promote its own narrative and defend its poor human rights record", said Alkan Akad, a China researcher at Amnesty.

The goal is "to show the world that it can bend a top UN human rights official -- and thus the very concept of human rights -- to its will," said Maya Wang, senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch.

London-based Uyghur activist Rahima Mahmut slammed the visit as "window dressing".

"This is not the neutral, independent, unfettered investigation that we were promised," she told AFP.

Instead, Beijing was seeking "a free pass to continue carrying out repression, surveillance, torture and genocide against communities like mine", she added.

The hard details of what Bachelet saw and who she met during the visit have been largely withheld on a trip carried out in a "closed loop" by order of Beijing, ostensibly due to Covid risks.

China has filled the information vacuum, with state media running gleeful readouts of meetings between her and Xi as well as foreign minster Wang Yi.

They reported that Bachelet said she "admired China's efforts and achievements in ... protecting human rights" during the virtual call with Xi.

A spokesperson for Bachelet did not confirm whether the reports were accurate when contacted by AFP, instead saying the UN would not publish readouts of bilateral meetings.

A later, hurried "clarification" by the UN stopped short of denying that she had praised China's rights record. But neither side mentioned Xinjiang in their readouts.

Norway-based Uyghur activist Abduweli Ayup said he was "disappointed" that Bachelet had appeared to allow Beijing to "misinterpret" her words.
"They have already used (her) for propaganda," he told AFP.

#CCP set up an orchestrated campaign in order to silent activist, Drew Pavlou, in London. He was arrested & bailed out after having locked up for 23 hours without seeing his lawyer.

Fake emails were created to portrait him as a bomb threat to the Chinese embassy. He has also been receiving threats since.

This is how far & organize #CCP can do to manipulate opinions outside of China. Imagine what they can do in #HongKong, #Tibet and even #Taiwan.
