Trudeau backs Biden effort to identify origin of COVID-19

Canada backs U.S. President Joe Biden’s effort to identify the origin of COVID-19, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday.

“We support the call by the United States and others to better understand the origins of COVID-19, not just to ensure accountability, but also to make sure we fully understand how to better protect the world going forward from any such further pandemics,” Mr. Trudeau said at a news conference in Ottawa.

Chinese AI firm blacklisted by U.S. gave funds to York, Queen’s universities

Two Ontario universities, York and Queen’s, have been collaborating with a major Chinese artificial-intelligence company that has been blacklisted by the U.S. government for supplying surveillance equipment used against Muslim Uyghurs.

iFlytek, a partly state-owned enterprise that specializes in voice recognition, provided $1.5-million to Toronto’s York University in 2015 to create a new iFlytek Laboratory for Neural Computing and Machine Learning and a chair at the Lassonde School of Engineering. Queen’s University, in Kingston, received $727,000 in 2019 from the Chinese AI company to develop learning models that detect and process speech.

Canadian PM Asks Trudeau Whether to Ban the PLA Scientists into Sensitive Research Facilities and Trudeau Indicates Against Racial Discrimination

Is criticizing the Chinese government an action to discriminate against Asians? Recently, the Chinese government's infiltrating the Canadian laboratories attracts attention. A Parliament Member questioned whether the Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau would prohibit the Chinese government and the military from sending scientists to Canada’s sensitive research facilities. Trudeau indicated that he “will not greet and succumb to anti-Asian's discrimination”. Michael Chong, a Canadian Parliament Member being sanctioned by China for Hong Kong issues, announced a joint statement with Kenny Chiu to criticize Trudeau for conflating the two matters and falling into the trap of the CCP, and to ask him to withdraw his remarks.

Report found Beijing's exploitation in search results to shape views of Xinjiang and COVID-19

China’s global campaign to expand the reach of its political positions is said to help it secure a coveted piece of online real estate: first-page search results on Google and other major Western portals.

Content reflecting Beijing’s position on its human-rights record and the origins of Covid-19 now regularly appears among top results on Google, Bing and YouTube, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution and another Washington think tank, the Alliance for Securing Democracy, which seeks to study and resist the authoritarian government.

The report found the Chinese state media are "remarkably effective" at influencing the content returned for the term “Xinjiang” across several search types.

“Xinjiang,” which is among the most neutral terms in our data set, regularly returned state-backed content across news searches, with at least one Chinese state-backed news outlet appearing in the top 10 results in 88% of searches (106 out of 120 days searched).

On YouTube, state media appeared among the top 10 results in searches for “Xinjiang” in 98% of searches (118 out of 120 days searched).

China’s grand tour: Opposition mounts to Beijing ‘expansionism’ in Pacific

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has accused Beijing of unnecessary expansion of its security reach, as MPs urge her to counter the superpower's "persuasion and pressure".

And Australia's new foreign minister has flown urgently to Fiji in a last-ditch bid to dissuade Pacific Island nations from signing up to a new Chinese security pact.
